The distinction between a Tycho DJ set and a Tycho live performance is not a trivial one. When Hansen performs as a DJ, he works from Pioneer CDJs, selects music curated by himself and other artists, and operates without a click track, without synchronized visuals from Anti-Alias, and without the full live ensemble of Zac Brown on guitar and bass, Rory O’Connor on drums, and Joe Davancens on keyboards. The DJ format is explicitly about curation over composition — Hansen routinely plays only a handful of his own tracks in any given set, using them as structural anchors within a broader survey of the music that has shaped his sound. The Boiler Room Set: San Francisco, June 26, 2014

Hansen performed a live set at Boiler Room’s Skyy Stream event in San Francisco on June 26, 2014 — one of the rare Boiler Room appearances for an artist whose primary association is with live band performance rather than DJ culture. This was technically a live set rather than a pure DJ performance, featuring Tycho tracks performed and sequenced in real time. The setlist documented at setlist.fm includes: Awake, Dye, Hours, L, Spectre, Apogee, Dive, Past Is Prologue, A Walk, See, Montana, and Ascension. The recording is archived on Boiler Room’s official YouTube channel and was also uploaded to SoundCloud by the Boiler Room platform.

The Boiler Room appearance cemented Hansen’s visibility in the club and electronic music press that typically covered DJ culture rather than indie live acts. It served as a bridge between the two distinct sides of his performance identity.

The Burning Man Sunrise Sets: Complete Catalog

The centerpiece of Hansen’s DJ legacy is a tradition that began in 2014 and continued — with a two-year pandemic interruption in 2020 and 2021 — through 2025. Each set is titled, recorded in approximately two-hour duration, and uploaded to SoundCloud with tracklists. They are performed in total darkness, beginning around 5:30–5:40 a.m., timed to end as the sun clears the horizon over the Black Rock Desert.

The structural logic of these sets is architectural. Hansen has described building an “emotional space” rather than a linear narrative — a space in which the physical transition of darkness into light becomes the organizing principle, with specific tracks reserved for specific phases of the sunrise. 2017: Ingress

Hansen has called this “my absolute favorite morning of all time.” By 2017, the scale of attendance had grown enormously — thousands of bicycles converged on the Dusty Rhino specifically for the sunrise set, and the recording consistently ranks among the most-played Burning Man uploads on SoundCloud. The 2017 set stands out for a striking opening gambit: beginning with the obscure Italian progressive rock group Sensations’ Fix (“Acudreaming”) before moving through Hansen’s own early catalog tracks “Sunrise Projector” and “Ascension,” then Home’s “Resonance” and “Continuum,” before arriving at Boards of Canada’s “Kaini Industries.” This deep dive into his own foundational catalog — Past Is Prologue-era material rarely played publicly — was a structural decision that established the set as deeply autobiographical.

The cloud obscured sunrise moment arrived during Boards of Canada’s “Corsair” and then became visible during the post-sunrise sequence. The closing run through Caribou, 16 Bit Lolitas, Robert Babicz, and The Bamboos demonstrated a continuing appetite for melodic house and disco-influenced textures as daylight took hold.

2019: Inversion

By 2019, multiple art cars had begun tying up together around the Dusty Rhino to form temporary desert amphitheaters, a measure of how central this annual event had become to the Burning Man landscape. The Inversion set is most frequently cited for its opening — Van Halen’s “1984” — a choice that immediately repositioned the entire set as something far stranger and more confident than the ambient-IDM palette most attendees expected. It was a deliberate subversion, using the keyboard intro to that iconic rock album as a kind of temporal disorientation device before moving into Boards of Canada’s “Alpha and Omega.” The full set was documented in detail by Spruce Sounds and other fan-tracklist databases.

2020–2021: The Pandemic Gap and the Red Rocks Substitution

Burning Man was cancelled in both 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There were no Burning Man sunrise sets in either year. Hansen adapted by finding alternative contexts for his annual dawn-oriented performance.

In November 2020, Hansen performed a 30-minute live set at the virtual Adult Swim Festival (November 13–14, 2020), one of the pandemic era’s most prominent online festival events. Performing alongside Kaytranada, Thundercat, Robyn, and Mastodon, he presented a condensed live version of his catalog — including “Adrift” (from 2011) and “Outer Sunset” (2020) — broadcast exclusively on YouTube, where full sets were archived afterward.

On New Year’s Day 2021, Hansen performed an exclusive livestream called Tycho Solo Ascent from a wooded location in the hills of Northern California. The stream ran for 48 hours on-demand following the performance. This was an explicit attempt to preserve the introspective, nature-situated quality of the Burning Man sets during a year when the desert was inaccessible.

On July 24, 2021, Hansen performed a full DJ set at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, opening for STS9’s Sky World show. This set — running approximately 1h 35m — functions as the closest thing to a 2021 Burning Man sunrise set in his public archive, and was uploaded to SoundCloud. 2022: Deca

The tenth sunrise set demanded an occasion-appropriate frame. Hansen provided one: opening with a spoken word interlude from philosopher Alan Watts, reading “Inevitable Ecstasy,” layered over production from Superposition and Formless. This philosophical preamble — roughly three minutes of Watts’s voice above pulsing synthesizer — immediately distinguished Deca from all previous sets in the series. It was not a party opener; it was a guided meditation initiation. Bahadur Shah Zafar’s last verses, read by historian William Dalrymple, appeared as a second spoken word interlude at track 20, just before sunrise — a quietly astonishing moment of global literary and philosophical depth in a desert electronic music context.

The set introduced a new cohort of artists: Fred again.. and The Blessed Madonna’s “Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing),” then one of the most culturally resonant tracks in post-pandemic dance music; Australian producers Juno Mamba (“Flicker”) and Pat Carroll (“Hope,” “Alight”), whose work Hansen was among the first to champion to international audiences; and Tinlicker & Helsloot (“Lullaby”). 2023: Sanctuary

The Sanctuary set represented the most dramatic genre expansion in the series’ history. The introduction of UK garage, breakbeat, and the kinetic productions of salute, Sammy Virji, and DJ Seinfeld placed this set at the intersection of Hansen’s atmospheric roots and the contemporary London club sound. The set was internally structured into phases explicitly labeled by Hansen in the upload description: “Begin Driving,” “Arrive,” and then sunrise, each functioning as a movement in the larger composition.

The opening tracks — Hansen’s own demos “Aerojet” and “Cypress” — indicated that this was also a testing ground for unreleased material. “Small Sanctuary (Demo)” and an “Untitled Demo” both appeared in the post-sunrise section, underscoring the reciprocal relationship between the desert performances and his studio work. Treasure Island Music Festival: October 2016 (Emergency Solo Set)
