His position is that if the artist and mix engineer know their listening environment and monitor capabilities intimately, the mastering can be built directly into the collaborative mixing process. By “mixing into the master,” Hansen and Eldridge retain granular control over the final dynamic range — ensuring that the heavy artistic compression they use throughout the mix is not undone by a mastering limiter applied by someone who does not know the intention behind it.
This philosophy extends to the collaborative structure itself. Because both Hansen and Eldridge use REAPER, their workflow is unusually fluid: Hansen brings his computer to Eldridge’s acoustically treated studio, Eldridge works on the session, and Hansen takes the updated session file back to his home studio to continue developing MIDI and arrangement details — with Eldridge’s professional mix parameters already in place. The boundary between mixing and composition is deliberately blurred.
External mastering does enter the picture in specific circumstances. For particularly dense or complex material, Hansen acknowledges the psychological toll of extended production: after months of intimate work with the same material, a producer’s ears adapt and stop registering details that a fresh, highly trained perspective would catch immediately. For such cases, he has worked with Eric Broyhill at Monster Lab Audio in Sacramento, treating external mastering not as an industry convention to be followed but as a targeted tool to be used when the situation genuinely requires it.
The Organic-Digital Continuum: Why the Philosophy Holds Together
