The challenge of integrating vocals into Tycho’s dense, mid-frequency-heavy synthesis textures required, as Hansen has described it, a “surgical” approach to frequency management. Infinite Health (2024): Electronic Bass Reimagined

Infinite Health represented the most significant shift in bass production approach since Zac Brown joined the band. Produced in collaboration with Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear — a musician whose own production work is characterized by rhythmic adventurousness and willingness to make low-end decisions that serve groove over convention — the album approached bass from a fundamentally different starting point than the trilogy records.

The genesis of the album’s title track, and arguably the bass philosophy of the entire record, came from a Roland Juno-106 emulation. Hansen was working with Softube’s Model 84 plugin — which he has described as “one of the best soft synths ever made” — and the characteristic bassline quality of the Juno-106’s sound triggered a direction for the record. The Juno’s bass is different from the Minimoog’s or the Mono/Poly’s: it is tighter, more defined in its transient attack, and has the characteristic Roland chorus processing integrated into its DNA. Where Minimoog bass feels warm and geological, Juno bass feels precise and purposeful — more contemporary in its clarity.

On “Phantom,” the lead single and one of the album’s most discussed tracks, Hansen deployed what he described as a Juno emulation bassline that he characterized as “something pretty new for me.” The track is built around a four-to-the-floor rhythmic structure, and the bass functions not as the slow, harmonically patient element of earlier Tycho records but as an active rhythmic participant — pulse rather than foundation. This was a departure, and it was intentional. The collaboration with Chris Taylor pushed Hansen toward production decisions that served the groove’s energy rather than the atmosphere’s stillness.

The album’s overall approach to bass was shaped by the foundational role that Kaelin Ellis’s drum breaks played in the production process. Unlike previous Tycho records that were typically built from melodic seeds — a synthesizer figure or guitar line that generated the harmonic identity of a track — Infinite Health was built rhythmically. The Korg Minilogue returned for Infinite Health as a bass voice. The Minilogue’s dual oscillators and tight filter response give it a bass sound that is more definite — more attack-forward — than the Minimoog’s smoothness, and for a record built on the energy of drum breaks, that definition served the music’s intentions.

The critical technical detail here is that the entire bass processing chain for the live show runs inside the UAD Console application using UAD plugins, which then passes its output to Ableton Live for insert processing. This means the bass tone that reaches the front-of-house desk has already been processed through emulations of classic outboard gear — Neve preamp emulations, 1176 limiter emulations, and any other UAD processing Hansen and the band have programmed — before any additional live mixing decisions occur. The live bass tone is not left to the interpretation of the front-of-house engineer; it is pre-built in the band’s own system and delivered to the desk as a finished sound.

This level of control over the live bass sound is characteristic of the broader Tycho approach to live performance: nothing is left to chance. The same aesthetic precision that governs studio production governs what happens on stage. Kontakt’s ability to layer multiple samples and apply velocity-sensitive responses means the sampled Minimoog bass can be played with some of the dynamic nuance of the original instrument.

This approach also reflects a practical philosophy about hardware versus software that is more nuanced than the simple analog-worship that some producers express. Hansen is not sentimentally attached to hardware for its own sake. He uses hardware because it sounds better, or because its physical interface generates different creative results than a mouse and screen. When a digital environment can deliver the same sound in a more reliable format — as Kontakt can for sampled bass patches — Hansen uses the digital environment without apology.

It still moves slowly, with patience, and trusts the low end to do its work without being asked to do more.
