What a listener experiences as the Tycho sound — those vast, immersive spatial environments, those guitar lines that melt into pads, those delay trails that seem to contain harmonic information that was never played, those reverb tails that extend beyond physical sense — is the direct product of a production philosophy that treats time-based effects, saturation, compression, and modulation as primary compositional materials.
“For me, it’s more about the effects than it is about the instruments,” Hansen told Soundtoys in one of his most comprehensive interviews about his creative process. “You’re playing the effects just like you’re playing the instruments.” This is not a casual observation about how he likes to work. It is a precise description of the technical reality of how Tycho records are constructed. When he sits down with a Minimoog and a chain of reverbs and delays, the instrument and the processing are a single system. He is not playing a synth through effects. He is playing a synth-effects system, and the output of that integrated system is the sound he is actually composing with.
This philosophy has practical and aesthetic consequences at every stage. Because effects are compositional rather than corrective, they are applied during performance rather than after. The reverb tail that hangs behind a synth note is not added in the mix; it is part of how the note was played, shaping the timing of successive notes, creating harmonic content through overlapping delays, defining the rhythm through the way tails accumulate or dissipate between beats. Because Hansen commits to effects as part of the performance, the music has an irreducible character — a quality of having been made rather than constructed — that is difficult to achieve when processing is purely retrospective.
The Reverb Machine’s detailed analysis of Tycho’s “Awake” synth sound captured the essence of this approach in a single observation: “Tycho’s sound has more to do with the effects and the order of those effects than it necessarily does with the synthesizer being used.” The same source material, run through the same effects chain, produces a sound that is immediately recognizable as Tycho regardless of which synth generated the original signal. The Soundtoys Relationship: A Suite That Became a Studio Identity
Of all the software effects in Hansen’s toolkit — and that toolkit is substantial, encompassing UAD plugins, Valhalla DSP reverbs, Waves hardware emulations, and a growing collection of specialized processors — one developer holds a uniquely central position: Soundtoys. The relationship is documented, specific, and, by Hansen’s own account, foundational.
Hansen was the subject of the second installment of Soundtoys’ “Process” video series, filmed when Tycho played in Burlington, Vermont, near the Soundtoys headquarters. The resulting interview covered inspiration, gear philosophy, and the precise role that the Soundtoys plugin suite plays in his workflow. His words left no ambiguity: “Every single project I work on has at least one of the Soundtoys plugins being used.” And more specifically: “I can’t do a track without using EchoBoy and FilterFreak… they’re equal to finding drums or a pad.” The phrasing is significant. He is not describing utility — he is describing equivalence. In Hansen’s creative process, EchoBoy is as foundational to a track as the rhythmic foundation or the harmonic pad that defines it.
The reason Soundtoys occupies this position has to do with what their plugins do that most effects software does not: they model analog behavior with enough fidelity that the processing itself acquires character. Most digital delay plugins produce repeats. EchoBoy produces something closer to what a specific piece of hardware would do to the signal — the Memory Man emulation introduces the slightly blurred, filtering quality of bucket-brigade delay; the Space Echo emulation adds the pitch drift and saturation of tape. He described EchoBoy to Soundtoys as “kind of my go to,” with special affection for its Memory Man emulation mode. EchoBoy’s various analog-modeled modes generate their own characteristic artifacts under stress: the tape mode begins to saturate at high input levels, the Memory Man mode introduces bucket-brigade noise, and the Space Echo mode produces the distinctive pitch wobble of a worn tape loop. These are features, not bugs.
Both EchoBoy and Decapitator have been present on every mix Hansen has made for more than fifteen years. The consistency is itself part of the Tycho sound’s identity. “I’ll just stick with what I have because I feel like there is something to being limited,” he told Soundtoys. He has named it alongside EchoBoy as something he reaches for on every session, and its function is to introduce the phase behavior and resonance character of an analog filter at various points in the processing chain. Running a reverb tail through FilterFreak, for instance, can introduce a ringing quality to specific frequencies in the decay, giving the reverb a tonal character rather than a neutral spatial signature.
MicroShift, Soundtoys’ stereo widening tool, is “constantly used” in Hansen’s sessions. Its function is to create subtle pitch and timing offsets between left and right channels, producing the kind of stereo width that feels organic and physical rather than artificially spread. He applies it to vocals, guitars, and cymbals — anywhere he needs presence in the stereo field without the artificiality of simple panning or digital stereo enhancement.
The Crystallizer — Soundtoys’ granular pitch-shifting echo — has a more specialized role. It produces shimmering, pitch-shifted repeats by capturing short fragments of audio and replaying them at transposed pitches, creating the kind of glassy, harmonic shimmer that is particularly effective on sustained synth pads and guitar chords. The Little Plate, Soundtoys’ emulation of the famous EMT 140 plate reverb, serves as a specific spatial tool for shorter, more defined reverb settings. Plate reverbs have a distinctive metallic, dense decay that differs from room or hall algorithms — they are brighter, more present, and they push sounds forward in the mix rather than receding them into virtual space. What Soundtoys Does That Others Don’t
The fundamental distinction between Soundtoys plugins and most other effects software is character. Hansen has stated the core principle plainly: “Creating chords using reverb is kind of my signature. It’s just the reverbs and delays overlapping with other notes to create these engaging sounds.” The reverb is not simulating a space. It is generating musical content. When he plays single notes on a Minimoog through a reverb tail that lasts three seconds, the overlap of successive notes creates harmonic structures — implied chords — that exist only in the reverb. The melody is monophonic. The harmony is an artifact of time.
Serial Reverb Stacking
Hansen’s reverb chains are not single-unit applications. He has described a process where he “takes a reverb and runs it through a distortion and a filter, puts another reverb on it, then puts maybe another reverb on it before the delay.” This serial approach — reverb into processing into reverb into more processing — creates reverb tails that are not just long but complex. Each reverb stage interacts with the output of the previous stage, introducing new decay patterns, new harmonic content, and new spatial characteristics. The first reverb creates a room. Before his 2023 studio gear sale, Hansen’s hardware reverb collection was substantial and specifically chosen. The Ursa Major Space Station SST-282 — a digital reverb from 1981 — was among the most important. Its early digital reverb algorithm has a character that modern reverbs struggle to replicate: a slight graininess, a distinctive metallic shimmer in the decay, and a density that comes from its early algorithmic design rather than from convolution or high-sample-rate processing. Hansen used it as the first reverb in his serial chains, feeding its output through additional processing to create the complex, evolving textures that define so much Tycho material.
The Strymon BigSky is the other primary hardware reverb, and it earns its place through versatility. Its algorithms range from realistic room and hall simulations to the experimental shimmer and cloud modes that have become central to the Tycho spatial signature. The shimmer mode — which pitch-shifts the reverb tail upward by an octave and feeds it back into itself — produces the signature Tycho shimmer heard on track after track: a glassy, ascending harmonic cloud that hangs behind and above the dry instrument, lifting the sonic environment into registers that no physical room could replicate.
The Strymon El Capistan, another hardware unit, contributes a different species of reverb character — the specific spatial coloration of a tape delay unit operating in a room. Hansen uses it when he wants delay repeats that break down and dissolve into warm noise rather than fading out cleanly — delays that become reverb as they die.
Valhalla DSP: The Software Reverb Foundation
On the plugin side, Sean Costello’s Valhalla DSP products form the core of Hansen’s reverb architecture. He has listed both Valhalla Shimmer and Valhalla VintageVerb on his ISO50 blog as essential software tools, and a detailed breakdown of his VintageVerb usage appeared in an analysis of the Awake synth production.
His VintageVerb technique involves running two instances as inserts in the synth signal chain. The first is a short, dry plate reverb — starting from the Fat Plate preset with the mix pulled down to around fifteen percent — that gives the signal just enough spatial context to exist in a room without sounding processed. The second is a long, lush modulated reverb using VintageVerb’s 1970s color mode, starting from the Large RHall preset with modulation amount and depth turned up. The 1970s color mode in VintageVerb is particularly important. Its built-in modulation, he has noted, reduces the need to manually create pitch wobble effects to simulate tape saturation — a technique he learned from studying Boards of Canada’s production aesthetic.
The Compression-After-Reverb Technique
The most distinctive element of how Hansen deploys reverb is not what reverb he uses but where he places compression in relation to it. In conventional signal chains, compression comes before reverb: the compressor controls the dynamics of the dry signal, and then reverb is applied to the compressed result. The reverb tail naturally decays below the level of the dry signal, creating a conventional sense of space.
Hansen inverts this. He places aggressive compression after the reverb in the signal chain, using the compressor to raise the level of the reverb tail relative to the dry signal. The typical flow, documented in his XLR8R tutorial and analyzed extensively by production guides, looks like: input, compression, heavy EQ, reverb, delay, heavy compression, EQ, output. The “heavy compression” stage after the reverb is not subtle. He has described using aggressive compressors — PSP Old Timer, Softtube CL-1B, and UAD 1176 variants — specifically to “bring out the reverb tails and lengthen the sounds,” followed by a Pultec-style EQ to restore high-frequency presence that the compression may have dulled.
The result of this inversion is that the reverb tail becomes a co-equal sonic element alongside the original sound. It is not background atmospheric wash but foreground structural content — as loud and as present as the dry signal, shaped by compression into a continuous, sustaining wash that blurs the boundary between individual notes and makes single-note melodies sound like sustained chords. This is the technique that produces the signature Tycho sound of a guitar note or synth tone suspended in space, blooming outward over time rather than decaying conventionally.
Delay as Compositional Tool
Where reverb creates space, delay creates time. In Hansen’s hands, however, both of these descriptions are too narrow. Delay does not just fill space with rhythmic echoes — it generates melodic counterpoint, creates harmonic relationships through note overlap, defines rhythmic feel through the relationship between delay tempo and song tempo, and builds entire textural layers from single-note sources.
“The delays kind of create this counterpoint,” Hansen has explained. “You play a note and then the echo plays back in a different rhythm, and those two things together create something more complex than what you actually played.” This is delay as composition rather than decoration — the delay is not repeating what you played but creating a new voice in dialogue with what you played. The timing, feedback level, and modulation of the delay determine the character of that voice.
Tempo Synchronization as Foundation
One of the essential elements of how delay functions in Tycho’s music is tempo synchronization. By locking delay times to the song’s tempo — a technique standard in electronic music production but executed with particular care in Tycho’s case — Hansen ensures that delay repeats fall on musically meaningful subdivisions rather than arbitrary time intervals. A delay set to a dotted eighth note at 100 BPM creates a specific polyrhythmic relationship with a four-on-the-floor kick. A quarter-note delay creates echoes that reinforce the beat. A half-note delay creates a more expansive, breathing response.
What Hansen does with tempo synchronization that is less common is combine multiple delay units operating at different tempo subdivisions simultaneously. EchoBoy may be running a dotted eighth note delay while the Strymon Timeline contributes a half-note echo and the Chase Bliss Tonal Recall adds an analog delay at a specific non-tempo-synced interval. The combination of these three delay voices — each at a different tempo relationship to the source, each with a different analog character and decay behavior — creates a complex, evolving rhythmic texture from a single melodic line. The counterpoint Hansen describes is not between two instruments. It is between a source and the multiple temporal reflections of that source, each with its own character.
Hardware Delays: Character in the Chain

The Strymon El Capistan and the Boss RE-20 both provide tape delay emulation but with different characters. The El Capistan focuses on the warm, slightly deteriorating quality of a studio tape echo — repeats that degrade gradually but retain their essential musical information. The RE-20, a digital recreation of the legendary Roland RE-201 Space Echo, models the more extreme behavior of the original unit: repeats that can develop their own pitch drift, saturation, and self-oscillating feedback as the machine approaches its limits.
The Roland RE-201 Space Echo itself — the actual hardware unit, not an emulation — was a central piece of the Tycho studio through the Dive, Awake, and Epoch eras before its sale in the 2023 Reverb gear purge. Hansen’s description of what it provided is a model of technical precision: “It’s tape, so you get the tape saturation and warmth. And then you run it into the preamps, and those are transformer-based, which gives its own kind of harmonic distortion.” The Space Echo was not just a delay; it was a tape processing device that happened to produce echoes. Every signal that passed through it received a double coloration: first from the magnetic tape’s saturation characteristics, then from the transformer-based preamps that Hansen ran its output into. The cumulative effect was a warmth that no single-unit digital emulation fully captures, which is why the RE-201’s specific character is so frequently cited as a distinguishing element of that era’s Tycho recordings.
The Chase Bliss Tonal Recall fills the analog delay niche with a bucket-brigade delay line that produces a dark, warm, slightly degraded repeat character that sits differently in a mix than either tape or digital delay. Hansen has called it his favorite analog delay, and its all-analog signal path combined with digital parameter control gives him the warmth of analog bucket-brigade chips with the precision of MIDI recall.
The Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man extends the analog delay palette further. Its bucket-brigade circuit has a different character from the Tonal Recall — darker, slightly noisier, with a more pronounced high-frequency roll-off that makes its repeats feel distant and aged. Its built-in chorus and vibrato circuits add modulation to the delayed signal, thickening repeats in a way that differs from post-delay modulation. The Memory Man is reached for when Hansen wants a delay tone that is unmistakably analog — warm, dark, physically present in a way that sounds like memory rather than precision.
The Roland Space Echo: A Study in Irreplaceable Character
The Roland RE-201 Space Echo deserves its own examination because of the specific role it played in establishing the sonic character that defined Tycho’s critical years — the period from Dive through Epoch when the aesthetic now associated with the project was fully formed.
The RE-201, produced by Roland from 1974 through the 1980s, uses a loop of magnetic tape that passes across three separate playback heads and one record head, each at a fixed distance. By engaging different combinations of heads and adjusting the tape speed (and therefore the delay time), the operator can create single echoes, multi-head delays with rhythmic complexity, and combinations of delay and reverb (produced by a spring reverb unit built into the machine). The machine also has a self-oscillation point at high feedback settings where the echoes build on themselves, eventually dissolving into a continuous wash of saturated tape noise.
What the Space Echo adds to a signal is inseparable from the physical process of recording to and playing back from magnetic tape. The tape compresses transients gently as it saturates, adding harmonic richness at each pass. Successive echoes degrade slightly in high-frequency content as the tape accumulates wear across each replay cycle. The pitch of the echo shifts slightly as the tape speed drifts, adding organic instability to the repeats. And the machine’s spring reverb blends with the tape echo, creating a hybrid spatial effect that is neither pure reverb nor pure delay but something characteristically in between.
Hansen ran the RE-201 as a processing stage — not just for creating delay effects but for routing signals through its tape saturation circuit and transformers as a warmth mechanism, even without engaging the delay function. When a synth signal or a guitar line passed through the Space Echo and then into the Neve preamps, it had already acquired a layer of tape coloration before the preamp added its own transformer saturation. The sale of the RE-201 in 2023, along with the shift toward software-centric production, marks a genuine before-and-after moment in the Tycho sonic timeline. Its replacement is not a single unit but a combination: the Boss RE-20 for portable Space Echo emulation, the Strymon El Capistan for more refined tape delay modeling, and UAD tape emulation plugins for the tape saturation qualities that the hardware once provided. Whether these replacements fully substitute for the original is a question without a clean answer — Hansen himself has acknowledged that the Ursa Major Space Station, another unit sold in the purge, “has never been properly emulated.”
Strymon Pedals as the Analog Effects Core
The Strymon ecosystem forms what Hansen has publicly called the “mothership stereo effects rig” — a sprawling, interconnected matrix of hardware effects that processes everything from mono synths to guitar to bass before it hits the recorder. Strymon’s place in this rig is not incidental. The company’s pedals occupy the center of the hardware effects chain because of their specific combination of algorithmic quality, MIDI integration, and the analog signal paths that distinguish them from purely digital alternatives.
The Strymon Deco is, by Hansen’s own account, his favorite guitar pedal of all time — and he owns three. The Deco emulates two reel-to-reel tape machines running slightly offset from one another, a technique from classic studios used to produce flanging, chorus, slapback delay, and tape saturation. In the mothership rig, Hansen uses the three Decos at different points in his signal chains: one for guitar, one for synths, and one as a general-purpose saturation stage that everything passes through before reaching the recorder. The parallel compression technique — where a heavily compressed signal is blended back with the original uncompressed signal — appears throughout Tycho’s production. By keeping the dynamic range of the original while adding the density of a crushed parallel signal, Hansen achieves the Tycho characteristic of music that feels both spacious and present simultaneously: the dynamics breathe, but the sustain of reverb tails and synth pads fills every moment between peaks.
Bus compression, applied to submixes of drums, synths, and the stereo mix itself, does something Hansen has described as “glue” — a word used across production culture, but specific in its meaning. When a compressor is applied to a bus containing multiple elements, the compression responds to the sum of those elements, creating a dynamic relationship between them that was not there before. A kick drum and a synth pad that were previously independently dynamic now share a compressor, and the kick’s transient causes the pad to duck momentarily. This sidechain-like relationship between elements within a bus produces a rhythmic breathing that Hansen uses deliberately — the music seems to pulse with the drums not because of sidechain routing but because the bus compressor responds to the strongest transients and imposes a shared dynamic behavior on everything within the bus.
The Empirical Labs Distressor — a hardware compressor that Hansen has described using extensively across his Awake and Epoch era recordings — provides a different character from optical compression. Its various compression modes emulate the behavior of specific classic compressors, from VCA-style to tube-style compression, and its built-in harmonic distortion circuit can add second and third harmonic content at high compression ratios. This dual function — compression and saturation in a single unit — makes the Distressor particularly effective for Hansen’s approach, where compression and warmth are inseparable goals.
Saturation and Distortion: Tone Shaping at Every Stage
Saturation in Tycho’s production is omnipresent but rarely audible as distortion. It is the accumulation of subtle harmonic additions at every stage of the signal path — each individual stage contributing almost inaudibly, the cumulative effect producing the physical, warm, analog-feeling character that defines the music.
The primary hardware saturation tools have been the three Strymon Decos (tape saturation), the Roland Space Echo (tape saturation in delay mode and as a processing stage), the Neve 1076 preamps (transformer saturation), and the Empirical Labs Distressor (variable harmonic distortion). Together these hardware stages establish a baseline of analog coloration that exists before any plugin processing begins.
In software, Soundtoys Decapitator provides the primary saturation, with the UAD Studer A800 and Ampex ATR-102 tape machine emulations adding saturation characteristics modeled after specific classic recording formats. The Studer A800 is particularly important as a “glue” processor on the master bus: its tape compression and saturation emulation ties the individual elements together in the same way that running a mix through an actual tape machine would, imposing a shared physical medium on all the elements simultaneously.
The Elektron Analog Heat — a dedicated hardware saturation and distortion processor — entered Hansen’s rig for the Infinite Health era. On “Consciousness Felt,” he paired a Sequential Prophet-5 with the Analog Heat, using the hardware saturation to push the Prophet’s already warm tone into a richer, more harmonically complex register. The Analog Heat’s all-analog signal path distinguishes it from plugin saturation: the nonlinearity of its physical circuits produces artifacts and harmonic content that mathematical emulations do not quite reach. Hansen’s use of it reflects his persistent interest in hardware processing even during his post-gear-sale, software-centric phase — some sonic qualities still require physical circuits.
Modulation Effects: The Movement Underneath
Tycho’s music is rarely still. Beneath the sustained pads, the extended delay trails, and the vast reverb tails, there is constant motion — a slow, organic undulation that prevents the music from becoming static regardless of its tempo or melodic simplicity. This movement is the product of modulation effects applied throughout the signal chain: chorus, phaser, flanger, and the subtle pitch instability of analog circuits working slightly out of perfect tuning.
The Roland Juno-106’s built-in chorus circuit — or more precisely, its emulation through the Softube Model 84 plugin that Hansen has called “one of the best soft synths ever made” — is the most identifiable single modulation source in the Tycho palette. The Juno’s bucket-brigade chorus passes audio through a series of analog capacitors in sequence, introducing a slight time delay that creates detuning. But because the BBD chips are analog, the delay time varies with temperature and voltage, and the chips introduce their own noise floor and non-linearity. The result is a chorus that feels alive — it wavers, it breathes, it has a subtle organic texture that digital chorus emulations approximate but do not fully achieve. The Juno pad sound that recurs throughout Infinite Health and across the discography carries this modulation character as inseparably as any other property of the instrument.
The Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl emulates the pitch wobble of a worn vinyl record or a degraded tape machine. Hansen uses it to add subtle movement and detuning to guitar and synth signals, contributing to the nostalgic, slightly degraded aesthetic that pervades the Tycho sound. Unlike conventional chorus — which modulates between a fixed range of pitch variations at a predictable rate — the Warped Vinyl’s emulation introduces irregularity and unpredictability into the modulation, creating a sense of organic instability.
The Strymon Deco’s flanging circuit — one of the reasons Hansen owns three of them — produces flanging as a byproduct of its tape offset emulation. When two tape machines run slightly offset, the phase interference between their signals creates flanging at the points of near-alignment. The Deco reproduces this, and Hansen uses it at the end of his effects chains to add width and movement to the stereo signal after the delay and reverb stages have done their work.
Phase shifting from dedicated phasers, the modulation built into the Ursa Major Space Station reverbs, and the slow LFO modulation within the Valhalla VintageVerb’s 1970s mode all contribute further layers of motion. What Hansen is building through this accumulation of modulation is a sonic environment that moves at multiple speeds simultaneously: the fast attack and decay of individual notes, the rhythmic pattern of delay repeats, the longer arc of reverb decay, and the very slow undulation of modulation cycles. The combination creates the sense that Tycho music exists in a living space rather than a static one.
Effects Chains by Instrument
The Synth Chain
Hansen’s approach to synthesizer processing differs from his guitar processing primarily in where saturation enters the chain. A typical synth signal flow begins with the synthesizer’s own built-in character — the Minimoog’s ladder filter warmth, the Juno’s BBD chorus, the Oberheim SEM voices’ natural variation — and immediately encounters a saturation stage. The Strymon Deco, or alternatively Decapitator in the plugin domain, adds tape saturation before any time-based processing begins.
From saturation, the signal enters the first reverb — typically Valhalla VintageVerb in plate mode at around fifteen percent wet. This short reverb places the instrument in a defined space without dramatically altering its character. The signal then enters EchoBoy, Hansen’s go-to delay, running in a tempo-synced mode appropriate to the track. After EchoBoy, a second reverb — longer, more modulated, using VintageVerb’s 1970s hall mode with modulation depth raised — creates the vast spatial environment that the instrument now inhabits.
The entire wet chain then encounters compression. This post-reverb compression, the most distinctive element of Hansen’s synth processing, raises the level of the reverb tails relative to the dry instrument, creating the sustained, blooming quality that is the central characteristic of the Tycho synth sound. A final EQ pass — often a Pultec emulation, either PSP NobleQ or Waves RS56 — restores high-frequency content and shapes the final tonal character.
For monophonic synths like the Minimoog, this processing chain is applied multiple times across layered takes. Hansen’s technique of “creating chords out of mono synths” involves recording multiple passes of the same or related melodic content, each through a slightly varied effects chain, and layering them until the accumulated reverb tails and harmonic overlap creates the implied polyphony characteristic of Tycho pads. The chords are not played; they emerge from the processing.
The Guitar Chain
Guitar begins at the Origin Effects RevivalDRIVE, which sits at the very front of the signal chain and shapes the fundamental tone before anything else touches it. Hansen sets his amplifier (or Kemper Profiler in the live rig) to a clean tone and does all the tonal sculpting in the RevivalDRIVE, giving him precise control over the harmonic character of the signal before it enters the effects chain.
From the RevivalDRIVE, the signal hits the Diamond CPR-1 compressor, which smooths the dynamics and begins the process of sustaining the sound beyond its acoustic decay. The Electro-Harmonix POG may enter the chain here, adding sub-octave or upper-octave harmonics that thicken the signal before it hits time-based processing.
Delay comes next — often the Chase Bliss Tonal Recall for analog warmth, or the Strymon Timeline for more precise, tempo-synced patterns. The delay is then followed by the primary reverb stage — Strymon BigSky in shimmer or hall mode for the large spatial environments that define Tycho’s guitar sound. After reverb, the Strymon Deco adds its tape saturation and flanging, widening the stereo image and adding one final layer of warmth.
In the studio, a parallel processing path often runs alongside this main chain: the same guitar DI split to a software chain in REAPER, running through amp simulation (Amplitube, Guitar Rig 5, or the UAD Marshall Silver Jubilee 2555), its own delay and reverb, and then blended back with the hardware-processed signal. This combination of hardware analog processing and software amp simulation is central to why the Tycho guitar sound is difficult to identify as either fully analog or fully digital — it is genuinely both simultaneously.
The Drum Chain
Drum processing in Tycho’s production is more conservative than synth and guitar processing, primarily because drums serve a rhythmic and dynamic function that requires them to retain their transient character. Nevertheless, specific effects techniques define how drums are treated.
Compression on drums uses the Empirical Labs Distressor in the studio, with UAD 1176 emulation commonly applied in the plugin domain. Both produce a faster, more aggressive compression character than the optical compressors used on synths and guitars, and both respond to transient peaks with the kind of immediate gain reduction that tightens the feel of a drum kit without eliminating the snap and punch of individual hits.
Tape saturation, via the UAD Studer A800 or Ampex ATR-102 on the drum bus, adds the gentle rounding of tape compression to the entire kit, softening peaks slightly and creating the cohesive, warm drum sound heard on records like Dive and Awake. The tape emulation on drums also contributes a slight frequency response coloring — a modest low-mid emphasis and a gentle high-frequency roll-off — that makes drum sounds feel physically present rather than thin and digital.
Reverb on drums tends toward shorter, more defined settings than on synths — the goal is to give the kit a sense of existing in a room without washing out the transients that drive the rhythm. The Strymon BigSky in hall or room mode provides a controlled, realistic reverb that places the drums in a defined space. The Eventide Black Hole, Hansen’s more experimental reverb, has also been applied to drum elements when he wants more dramatic, unnatural spatial effects.
Evolution Across the Discography
The Science of Patterns and Past Is Prologue (2002–2006): Digital Building Blocks
In the earliest Tycho material, effects processing was largely in-the-box by necessity. Working on a Korg Triton workstation with Cakewalk Sonar on a Windows machine, Hansen had access to software reverbs and delays but not the hardware chain that would later define the sound. The Triton’s built-in effects — workstation-quality reverb and delay algorithms — provided the spatial treatment that the early material required. The sound was already reaching toward the Tycho aesthetic — the warmth, the space, the layered textures — but without the analog coloration that hardware processing would later add. The resampling workflow on the Ensoniq ASR-X Pro introduced some lo-fi character through converter limitations, but the effects processing itself was clean, digital, and relatively conventional.
Dive (2011): The Arrival of Hardware Space
Dive marks the moment when effects processing became genuinely compositional in the Tycho context. The Roland RE-201 Space Echo entered the signal chain during this period, introducing real tape saturation to the sound for the first time. The Ursa Major Space Station SST-282 provided the vintage algorithmic reverb character that distinguished the spatial treatment from anything achievable with contemporary software. The Korg Mono/Poly — described by Hansen as the synth “heard the most on Dive” — ran through these hardware effects chains, and the combination of analog synthesis, tape echo saturation, and early digital reverb established the sonic character that listeners immediately recognized as something new.
The reverb-after-compression technique crystallized during this period. The signature blooming quality of guitar notes on tracks like “A Walk” — where harmonics sustain and swell beyond the natural decay of any amplified guitar — is the direct product of compression being applied to the reverb tail rather than before it. The delay counterpoint on “Coastal Brake,” where fingerpicked guitar overlaps with its own echoes to create harmonic richness far greater than the melody alone contains, demonstrates the compositional delay philosophy in its clearest early form.
Awake (2014): The Full Analog Front End
Awake represents the peak of Hansen’s investment in analog hardware processing. Neve 1076 preamps, Empirical Labs Distressors, UA 6176 channel strips, the SSL G-Comp bus compressor, and the Chandler LTD-1 all entered or expanded in the signal chain during this period. The effects processing grew more elaborate: multiple Strymon units, the Chase Bliss collection, and the full Soundtoys suite working together in chains of increasing complexity.
The sonic result is the most lush and enveloping of any Tycho record. The synths on Awake exist in spaces that feel physically impossible — too large, too resonant, too perfect. This is the product of serial reverb stacking taken to its most extreme expression, combined with the depth of analog coloration from the hardware chain, the warmth of the Oberheim FVS-1’s individual SEM voices, and the pervasive tape saturation of the Strymon Decos and the Space Echo. “Many of the ‘synth’ parts aren’t even synths; they’re guitars,” Hansen told Tape Op. “I use so many effects on everything that sometimes the guitars end up sounding indistinguishable from a synth.” This dissolution of instrumental identity is effects processing operating at its conceptual limit.
Epoch (2016): The Band in the Chain
The band configuration of Epoch — with Rory O’Connor’s live drums at the center and Zac Brown’s guitar more assertively present — required adapting the effects philosophy to accommodate a full ensemble rather than a solo producer’s layered takes. The reverb chains remained elaborate, but the spatial treatment was calibrated to preserve the transient character of live drumming. The guitar sound is more forward and defined than on Awake, reflecting a deliberate choice to let the band configuration speak rather than dissolving every element into the same spatial wash.
The Korg Minilogue entered as the key synth, and its four-voice polyphony changed the production approach slightly: where Minimoog-based productions required stacking mono takes to create harmonic richness, the Minilogue’s polyphony provided it directly. The effects chains adapted — with polyphonic sources, the reverb and delay treatment produces a denser, more immediately rich result without the individual-note interplay technique that Hansen had developed for mono synths.
Weather and Simulcast (2019–2020): Accommodating a Voice
The introduction of vocals on Weather required the most significant recalibration of the effects philosophy in Tycho’s history. Where every element in previous records could be treated to the same vast spatial environment, a human voice in the same reverb as everything else disappears — it loses the intimacy and presence that makes lyrics legible and emotionally direct.
Hansen’s solution was to apply the Tycho reverb treatment to instrumental elements while treating vocals with shorter, more defined spatial processing. The UA 6176 channel strip on vocals — providing the optical compression and transformer warmth appropriate to a voice without the extreme reverb treatment applied to instruments — created a front-to-back depth in the mix that the purely instrumental records did not require. The voice sits closer in the spatial image; everything else recedes into the characteristically vast Tycho environment behind it. This contrast between the vocal’s relative dryness and the immersive wetness of the instruments creates a new kind of depth in the Weather mix.
Simulcast, the instrumental companion to Weather, restored the full effects treatment to all elements, presenting the same performances in the more familiar Tycho spatial environment.
Infinite Health (2024): The Plugin Studio
Infinite Health represents the most deliberate shift in the effects production approach. With the 2023 Reverb sale removing the majority of the hardware chain — the Space Echo, the Ursa Major units, the Prophet-5, much of the vintage synth collection — and Hansen’s declared shift to software-first production, the record was built primarily with plugins. Soundtoys remained at the center: EchoBoy and Decapitator continued their fifteen-year residency on every mix. Valhalla VintageVerb continued as the primary reverb. But the Space Echo’s physical tape saturation was replaced by plugin emulation, and the vintage hardware reverbs were replaced by software algorithms.
The result, Hansen has stated, was an intentional return to the bedroom electronic production of his earliest work — leaner, more direct, built from a smaller set of tools applied with more focus. The warmth pursued across two decades through hardware accumulation is now pursued through careful plugin selection and the analog saturation of the physical synths and pedals that remain in the chain. The philosophical endpoint is the same: music that feels warm, physical, and analog in character. The means have shifted from hardware to software, but the destination remains.
The “Wet” Tycho Sound: Why the Music Feels Like a Place
Listeners who encounter Tycho’s music for the first time frequently describe it using spatial metaphors rather than musical ones. They say it sounds like a place — like a specific landscape, a time of day, a quality of light. This is not accidental, and it is not simply the result of using a lot of reverb. It is the consequence of every production decision described in this article working together to create a sound world that functions as an environment rather than a performance.
A “wet” sound, in technical terms, is a sound where the processed signal (reverb, delay, modulation) is at a high proportion relative to the dry, unprocessed source. Extreme wetness is usually considered a problem in mixing — too much reverb muddies the mix, makes individual elements difficult to distinguish, destroys transient clarity, and pushes everything back in the soundstage until nothing is present. Hansen’s achievement is making extreme wetness work as an aesthetic rather than fighting against it.
This works because of the compression-after-reverb technique described above. By raising the level of the wet signal relative to the dry through post-reverb compression, Hansen ensures that the wet sound has presence rather than just atmosphere. The reverb tail is not hovering in the background — it is occupying the same level as the dry signal, creating a sound that is simultaneously intimate and vast. The dry signal tells you where the instrument is; the wet signal tells you where the instrument exists.
The serial reverb stacking — running a source through three or four consecutive reverb stages — creates a spatial signature that does not correspond to any physical space. No room, no hall, no cathedral produces reverb with the characteristic harmonic complexity of a Tycho pad treated through multiple reverb algorithms in series. This impossibility is precisely the point. The music does not sound like it was recorded in a specific place. It sounds like it was recorded in a place that could not exist — a space larger than any physical acoustic environment, with a reverb tail that develops its own internal structure and harmonic content as it decays.
The delay counterpoint contributes spatial depth of a different kind — not the physical sense of being in a large room but the temporal sense of a sound that exists across time as well as space. When a guitar note leaves EchoBoy repeating rhythmically into the next bar, the note has become extended in time beyond its physical decay. It occupies the music not just at the moment it was played but across the measures that follow, creating a sense of sustained presence that makes Tycho’s music feel less like a sequence of sounds and more like a continuous environment that the listener inhabits.
The pervasive saturation — from transformer preamps, tape emulation, optical compression, and careful plugin application — adds a final quality that resists description but is immediately felt: the sense that the sound has weight and substance, that it exists as a physical object rather than a waveform. This is what Hansen means when he describes wanting his music to feel like an old, weathered photograph — not merely the appearance of analog age but the actual physical texture of something that has passed through material processes and carries the evidence of that passage.
The effects are not decoration. They are the material from which the world is built.
