Guitar appeared in this early period only as occasional raw material, sampled or heavily processed beyond recognition, folded into the electronic architecture in the same way that any found sound might be used: not as an instrument expressing itself but as a timbral ingredient serving someone else’s recipe. There was no guitar in the traditional sense. There was only signal, and signal could come from anywhere.
This matters for understanding what happened later. When Hansen eventually did integrate guitar as a recognizable instrument, it was not the move of a guitarist expanding into electronics. The Fender Jaguar, with its short 24-inch scale length and distinctive rhythm circuit, provided a brightness with inherent character compression: the shorter string length gives looser tension, which translates to a slightly fuller low-end response, while the built-in high-pass filter circuit (the so-called “strangle switch”) allows the treble to be filtered down so the guitar occupies a more specifically midrange-defined pocket. For tracks dense with synth pads already filling the low end, the Jaguar slotted into a specific frequency window without demanding territory it did not need.
The Jazzmaster, the Jaguar’s longer-scale sibling introduced by Fender in 1958, contributed more low-mid resonance. The Awake Era (2014): Hardware Deepens
New Instruments
The Awake sessions brought significant changes to the guitar arsenal. The Joe Bonamassa Signature Gibson Les Paul Goldtop became Hansen’s primary live instrument and a key studio guitar. Hansen encountered this specific guitar used, at a shop, and has described it as immediately becoming his most-played instrument.
What the Les Paul offered that the Fender offsets could not was sustain with specific harmonic character. The Goldtop’s P-90 pickups — single-coil pickups in humbucking-sized covers — deliver a midrange that sits between the brightness of a true single coil and the thickness of a humbucker. P-90s have a gritty, slightly compressed quality in their upper midrange, a quality that responds particularly well to the kind of downstream compression and reverb processing that Tycho applies: the P-90’s grittiness, processed through the Diamond CPR-1 compressor and then expanded by the BigSky’s shimmer, blooms into something that occupies the sonic space between guitar and synthesizer. The mahogany body and set-neck construction add sustain — notes ring out longer and with more midrange presence than on the Fenders, meaning they survive the journey through multiple delay and reverb stages with more of their energy intact.
The Fender Stratocaster also saw expanded use in the Awake period. Live, the guitar was processed through the pedalboard described above into a Kemper Profiling Amplifier — profiled from the Fender Deluxe Reverb and, in some configurations, the Bogner Duende amp head that Hansen used in the studio. The Epoch Era (2016): The Full Mothership Emerges
The “Mothership” Stereo Effects Rig
By the time Epoch was being produced and toured, Hansen had formalized his effects setup into what he publicly called the “mothership stereo effects rig” — a dedicated, semi-permanently configured system of pedals and hardware effects optimized for one primary purpose: taking a mono signal and transforming it into a wide, complex, saturated stereo field.
The naming is significant. “Mothership” implies a self-contained system of systems — not a linear chain but a hub through which signals are sent and from which transformed signals emerge. The Epoch-era mothership was not exclusively for guitar; it processed synthesizers, bass, and anything else that Hansen wanted to pass through its architecture. But the guitar was the signal source for which the rig was most fundamentally designed, because the guitar — a mono signal with a physical attack transient and a natural decay — offered the fullest demonstration of what the system could do.

The Epoch-era mothership signal flow, as documented in Hansen’s public demonstrations and studio tour footage, proceeded roughly as follows:

The Deco — which emulates the sonic behavior of two reel-to-reel tape machines running slightly offset, a classic studio flanging technique — offers two primary capabilities: tape saturation (which compresses, warms, and harmonically enriches the signal) and doubletracking/flanging (which creates spatial width and movement through phase relationships).
Most guitarists, if they owned a Deco, would use it for one purpose or the other. Hansen uses three of them, each assigned to a task that he did not want interrupted by parameter changes or A/B switching. The underlying creative principle is that tape saturation is not an effect added to a sound but a medium through which sound passes — and that applying it at multiple points in the signal chain is qualitatively different from applying it heavily at a single point. Real tape recordings did not receive “a tape sound” as a finishing layer. They were shaped by the physical properties of oxide-coated magnetic tape at every stage of the recording process. The triple-Deco setup approximates this cumulative effect: each pass through a Deco adds a small amount of harmonic compression and warmth, and the result of three passes is a signal that has been inhabited by tape-like physics without any single application being heavy enough to sound processed.
Chase Bliss: The Analog Alternative
The Chase Bliss pedals in the Epoch-era rig filled a specific gap between the Strymon units and the Electro-Harmonix analog delays. Chase Bliss Audio’s design philosophy — genuine analog signal paths controlled by digital parameter systems — meant that these pedals delivered actual bucket-brigade or VCA-based analog processing with the programmability and recall of digital hardware.
The Chase Bliss Tonal Recall, Hansen’s preferred analog delay, used a bucket-brigade delay line to produce the dark, warm, slightly noisy repeats that are the characteristic sound of 1970s and 1980s analog delay effects. Bucket-brigade chips — physical integrated circuits that pass an electrical charge through a series of capacitors, each one slightly smaller than the last — produce a decay that is physically different from digital emulation: a high-frequency rolloff that increases with each repeat, a slight compression in the analog circuit, and a noise floor that adds a gentle hiss to the decay. Chase Bliss’s MIDI implementation allowed Hansen to save these settings as presets, recalling specific Tonal Recall configurations at the press of a MIDI footswitch for different songs.
The Chase Bliss Mood, a micro-looper combined with an effects processor, introduced a genuinely new capability to the rig: real-time granular manipulation of incoming audio. The Mood could capture a short fragment of the guitar signal — a fraction of a second — and process it through granular, reversed, or pitch-shifted modes in real time, generating evolving textures from that fragment without the player needing to do anything further. The Meris and Hologram Units
The Epoch and post-Epoch period saw the addition of two pedals from smaller boutique manufacturers that addressed specific tonal needs the Strymon and Chase Bliss units could not.
The Meris Mercury7 reverb was designed in explicit homage to the Blade Runner soundtrack’s ambient textures, and its algorithm produces reverb fields that are specifically wide and cinematic — not simulating a room but creating a sonic environment that exceeds any physical acoustic space. For Tycho’s spatial ambitions, the Mercury7 offered a reverb character that felt like looking at a large landscape rather than standing in a large room.
The Meris Polymoon, a multi-tap delay with deep modulation capabilities, contributed complex rhythmic textures and what users describe as a “smearing” quality — the ability to create delay patterns that blend into each other rather than producing distinct, countable echoes. This smearing effect was useful for situations where Hansen wanted delay presence without the rhythmic clarity of identifiable echoes competing with the main groove.
The Hologram Electronics Infinite Jets was among the most unusual units in the rig. A resynthesizer that captures and manipulates incoming audio, the Infinite Jets can produce glitch-like textures, granular clouds, and unique harmonic grains from any audio source. It was used for the edges of the Tycho sound — those moments on Epoch where a texture seems to shift from something recognizable into something organic but unexplainable.
New Instruments in the Epoch Period
The Epoch-era studio saw the full integration of the Joe Bonamassa Les Paul as the primary recording guitar, alongside continued use of the Jaguar for specific textural work where its brightness was needed to cut through the synth density. Photographic documentation from this period also shows a cherry-sunburst Les Paul Standard alongside the Goldtop, suggesting Hansen was working with multiple Les Paul configurations, each profiled into the Kemper for different tonal needs.
Zac Brown’s contributions to Epoch involved more assertive playing than the Dive sessions had called for — the album’s rhythmic complexity required guitar parts that locked into specific rhythmic roles rather than simply floating in the atmospheric middle distance. Brown’s Jaguar work on Epoch is more percussive and articulated than his Dive contributions, and the signal chain reflected this: his live pedalboard during the Epoch tour used the Strymon El Capistan for primary delay, with the Origin Effects Cali76-CB compressor (a faithful hardware recreation of the classic UREI 1176LN FET compressor) at the front of the chain to even out dynamics before amp profiling.

The method begins with DI capture: the guitar signal goes directly to a high-impedance input on the Universal Audio 6176 channel strip, bypassing any speaker cabinet and microphone. This captures the purest possible guitar signal — no room acoustics, no microphone frequency response coloring, no speaker resonances. From this clean starting point, every other characteristic of the amp tone is added deliberately and controllably.
The in-the-box processing chain for studio guitars, as Hansen has described it, proceeded through approximately eight stages:

The OX attenuator’s speaker simulations were also designed in collaboration with Universal Audio’s DSP team to incorporate the actual frequency response and resonance characteristics of specific speaker cabinets, making the attenuated signal more convincing than simple reactive loading alone.
The Strymon Iridium amp modeler appeared in the rig for sessions requiring direct-to-DAW workflow without any setup overhead. For situations where Hansen wanted a quick guitar pass without configuring the full signal chain, the Iridium provided three cab-and-amp simulation modes (Fender clean, Marshall-style crunch, and an AC-style mid-range voice) in a compact pedalboard unit.
Guitar and Synth in the Mix: The Frequency Competition Problem
One of the structural challenges in every Tycho production is that the guitar and the synthesizers occupy substantially the same frequency territory. Both the Fender offset guitars (strongest in the upper midrange) and the Gibson Les Paul (dominant in the midrange and low midrange) share frequency space with the Roland Juno-106’s padded midrange, the Minimoog’s rich harmonic series, and the processed voices of the Korg Poly-61 and other analog instruments.
In a conventional rock record, this competition would require aggressive EQ decisions: high-pass the guitars here, cut the synths there, carve out a specific frequency slot for each instrument. Hansen approaches the problem differently, using the guitar and synth’s similar frequency content as a creative resource rather than an engineering problem to be solved.
The technique is based on the ambiguity this frequency overlap creates. When a guitar and a synthesizer are running through similar processing chains — similar reverbs, similar compression, similar saturation — and occupying similar frequency ranges, the listener cannot easily resolve which is which at any given moment. Notes that appear to come from a synthesizer pad might be a guitar processed beyond recognition. Lines that sound like a guitar melody might be a synthesizer with unusual processing. This irresolution is, in Hansen’s work, aesthetically desirable. “Many of the ‘synth’ parts aren’t even synths; they’re guitars,” he told Tape Op. “I use so many effects on everything that sometimes the guitars end up sounding indistinguishable from a synth.”
The management of this overlap happens at several levels:
Compression as equalizer: Heavy compression on both guitar and synth signals removes the dynamic envelope that allows the ear to identify source characteristics. When both instruments are compressed into a similar dynamic range, their differentiation becomes dependent on timbre and frequency content alone — and when those also overlap, the identity blur becomes complete.
High-pass filtering of guitar: Hansen has described using high-pass filters on guitar signals to remove low-end content that would compete with bass instruments and synth bass frequencies. This narrows the guitar’s frequency footprint to the upper midrange and above — which is also where the synth pads’ most interesting harmonic activity tends to occur. Rather than resolving the frequency competition, this intensifies the blend.
Dry-wet balance as a depth mechanism: By keeping rhythmic elements (kick drum, snare, bass) relatively dry and applying the heaviest reverb and delay treatment to the guitars and synths, Hansen creates a depth perspective in the mix where the rhythm sits “close” and the guitars and synths exist at a more distant, environmental level. The ambiguity between guitar and synth is amplified by this shared reverberant treatment: both instruments inhabit the same acoustic space, and that space is definitionally the same because the same reverb units (BigSky, Flint, GFI Tempus) are processing both.
Frequency-complementary voicing: When possible, Hansen and Zac Brown choose guitar voicings that emphasize different frequency clusters than the dominant synth sound. A guitar chord with a high third voicing emphasizes upper partials that sit above the synth pad’s fundamental frequencies, so the two instruments complement rather than cancel each other in the mix even while occupying nominally similar ranges.
Weather and Simulcast (2019–2020): Guitar Accommodates the Voice
The introduction of vocalist Hannah Cottrell (performing as Saint Sinner) across five of Weather’s eight tracks required a reconfiguration of guitar’s role in the mix. The human voice occupies the midrange frequencies where the guitar is most naturally present, and the presence of a vocalist created a fundamental competitive dynamic that the all-instrumental arrangements of previous Tycho records had never had to navigate.
On the Weather vocal tracks, the guitar pulls back — not in volume alone, but in frequency density and reverb depth. Where Epoch-era guitar washed freely across the midrange and upper midrange with long reverb tails, the Weather guitar tracks are more restrained in their reverb depth, shorter in their tails, cleaner in their articulation. The guitar does not disappear; it becomes infrastructure, providing harmonic support for the vocal rather than competing for the melodic foreground.
Simulcast, the simultaneously released instrumental companion to Weather, provided an explicit A/B demonstration of how much the guitar had been constrained on the vocal tracks. The same arrangements, without the vocalist, restored the guitar to its natural role: extended, washing, experientially dominant. Listening to corresponding tracks on Weather and Simulcast sequentially reveals how much creative decision-making about guitar space had been made on Weather — decisions that were invisible until the comparison became available.
The pedals documented on the Weather/Simulcast touring pedalboard did not change dramatically from the Epoch configuration, but the settings shifted. Shorter reverb tails on the BigSky, more conservative Deco saturation levels, less Analog Heat at the end of the chain. The mothership was the same machine with its parameters dialed differently.
Zac Brown assembled a revised touring pedalboard for the Simulcast run specifically, reflecting both the evolved material and the lessons of years of touring the Epoch configuration. The Strymon El Capistan remained as his primary delay. The Origin Effects Cali76-CB compressor continued as the always-on front-end. Two Boss GE-7 graphic equalizers — one set for flat and used as a clean boost, one configured for a specific midrange emphasis — provided level management for different roles within individual songs. A pair of Port City Sahana boost pedals gave Brown dedicated volume steps for rhythm and lead positions without changing the amp character.
The Kemper Profiling Amp: How It Changed Everything
No single piece of hardware has had a more comprehensive effect on the live guitar sound across all eras than the Kemper Profiling Amplifier. Its adoption — which began in the Dive touring era and was fully consolidated by Awake — did not change what Tycho sounded like so much as it made that sound reliably reproducible under the conditions that touring imposes.
The core problem the Kemper solved was that tube amplifiers are acoustically unstable in ways that matter for a production this precisely designed. The temperature of the room affects tube biasing. Stage vibration resonates through the speaker cabinet and alters its frequency response. Microphone placement shifts millimeter by millimeter between nights, changing the frequency response of the captured signal. The tubes themselves age, and their character changes as they do. For a production where every element is placed with extreme care — where the bass occupies a specific frequency slot, the guitars another, the synths a third — these variables are not acceptable. One night’s guitar sound is not reliably the same as the previous night’s guitar sound when real tube amps are involved.
The Kemper solves this through its profiling technology, which is more sophisticated than simple frequency-response measurement. The Kemper captures how a tube amplifier responds to dynamic changes in the input signal — how the power section compresses as pick attack increases, how the tone shifts when the preamp tubes are driven harder, how the output transformer saturates at high levels. This dynamic behavioral capture means that a profiled Fender Deluxe Reverb does not just sound like a Deluxe Reverb. It responds like one: the pick attack on a single note feels different from the pick attack on a full chord, in the same way it does through the real amp, because the Kemper has captured that behavioral dimension along with the tonal one.
Hansen has described the Kemper transition as rebuilding the live show from the ground up. The guitar channel on the live FOH console, instead of receiving a microphone signal from a speaker cabinet in an iso booth or behind a stage baffle, receives a direct output from the Kemper at line level. Front-of-house engineer Peter Franco then processes that signal — which already contains the full tonal character of the profiled amp — through the same outboard gear used in the studio: Neve 1073 preamps (used for colorative character rather than gain), Empirical Labs Distressors for compression. The guitar reaches the audience’s ears having passed through essentially the same signal chain it would have in the studio, except that the “amp” portion of the chain is digital and the “console” portion is an actual analog desk.
Both Hansen (playing the Goldtop Les Paul) and Zac Brown run through dedicated Kemper units on stage, with the Kemper Remote pedalboards providing instant song-by-song or section-by-section preset recall. Different songs may use different profiled amps — a Fender Princeton profile for the brighter, cleaner passages, a Vox AC30 profile for warmer midrange weight, a Bogner Duende profile for the fuller, more British-voiced tones.
Infinite Health (2024): Guitar as Seasoning
The Infinite Health album marked a deliberate return to the production philosophies of Hansen’s earliest work — bedroom electronic music-making, stripped-down arrangements, the sound of a person alone in a room discovering things. In this context, the guitar’s role contracted.
The instruments documented in the Infinite Health sessions include the Fender Telecaster — a guitar that had been a secondary presence in the rig for years but came to the foreground here. The Telecaster’s characteristic “honest” midrange, neither as bright as the Stratocaster nor as resonant as the Jaguar, suited the more restrained palette of this record. The Fender American Professional II Precision Bass appeared for the foundational low-end work that Hansen has described as interchangeable in this context with the Moog Prodigy synthesizer — both capable of providing the “thump” that the album needed without the guitar’s harmonic complexity.
The pedalboard remained in place but was used more conservatively. Guitar on Infinite Health functions as what might be called positive seasoning: present when its specific texture is needed, absent or backgrounded when the electronic elements are sufficient. The record does not lack guitar. It lacks guitar asserting itself as a primary melodic voice, and this withdrawal is what defines the album’s mood: introspective, domestic, personal. The guitar becomes one voice among many rather than the bridge between the human and the electronic.
The Eight-Step In-the-Box Chain: Full Documentation
Across multiple interviews and studio documentation, Hansen assembled a detailed picture of his complete digital signal chain for guitar. This eight-step sequence represents the standard in-the-box processing that guitar signals receive after hardware capture, as used primarily in the Awake through Weather period:
Step 1 — Aggressive front-end compression: PSP Old Timer or Softube CL-1B applied to smash the incoming signal, evening out dynamics and beginning the process of making the guitar behave more like a sustained instrument than a transient-driven one. Hardware compression at the capture stage is kept deliberately light so this digital stage can do the heavy work without being stuck with pre-committed settings.
Step 2 — Aggressive EQ for midrange presence: Waves API 550B with extreme moves allowed at this stage. Hansen is not subtle about EQ here — he is adding the “edge” in the midrange that the guitar will need to survive the upcoming layers of reverb that would otherwise push it back beyond intelligibility.
Step 3 — Simple, functional reverb: TC Electronic M30, Lexicon Plate, or Valhalla Vintage Verb for initial spatial cohesion. Not a character reverb but a glue reverb, placing the guitar in a defined acoustic context before additional complexity is added.
Step 4 — Character reverb for depth: D16 Group Toraverb or an emulation of the Ursa Major Space Station SST-282. These add modulation and a sense of “unfamiliar space” — the guitar is pushed further back into the mix, acquiring the quality of being heard from a distance rather than close-up.
Step 5 — Delay: Soundtoys EchoBoy in Memory Man emulation mode, placed after both reverbs. The delay captures the already-reverbed signal and repeats it, so each echo contains the spatial character of the reverbs within it. The result is delay that feels more atmospheric than rhythmic, even when it is rhythmically synced.
Step 6 — Amp simulation: Amplitube or Guitar Rig’s Control Room Pro, applied after the reverbs and delays rather than before. This placement makes the virtual amp behave as if it were receiving a wet signal — as if the pedalboard’s effects had already been applied before the amp — and produces a more natural interaction between the effects and the amp character than conventional signal flow would deliver.
Step 7 — Tail compression and Pultec-style EQ: A second compressor to bring up the reverb tails, extending the apparent sustain, followed by PSP NobleQ for a high-frequency shelf boost that restores “air” to a signal that heavy compression has darkened.
Step 8 — Console emulation and final polish: PSP Neon precision EQ for surgical corrections, Slate Virtual Bus Compressor for transparent mix-bus-style compression, and Waves NLS (Non-Linear Summer) for the subtle harmonic coloration of an analog mixing console. The NLS is the last stage of warmth — not a dramatic effect but a comprehensive one, touching every frequency lightly.
The Guitar-in-Electronic-Music Problem, Solved a Specific Way
The puzzle at the heart of the Tycho guitar approach — how do you use a culturally loaded, historically specific instrument inside an explicitly electronic production without the instrument’s identity overwhelming the production’s aesthetic — was solved not through concealment but through transformation.
Other producers have approached this problem by hiding the guitar’s identity: processing it so heavily that it sounds like something else entirely, using it as a sample source or a waveform rather than as a performed instrument, or restricting it to a supporting role where it can never be heard clearly enough to identify. Hansen’s approach is different. The guitar in Tycho’s music is not hidden. It is transformed — which is different because something transformed still carries a trace of its original identity. When you hide something, it disappears. When you transform it, something of it remains even in its new form.
What remains, after all the compression and delay and reverb and saturation and tape emulation and analog warmth, is the particular quality of a human being playing a stringed instrument in real time: the micro-timing variations that no sequencer generates, the slight pitch instability of a string vibrating under a pick, the way a note begins brighter and fades warmer as the harmonics decay, the searching quality in a melody played by someone who is genuinely not sure, as they play, what comes next.
This trace cannot be processed away. It survives fifteen stages of transformation. It is, finally, the entire point of having a guitar at all in a production that could theoretically function without one. The guitar is not in Tycho’s music because it sounds like a guitar. It is in Tycho’s music because no amount of processing can make it not sound like a human being made it.
That distinction — between music that was assembled and music that was played, however thoroughly the playing was then processed — is what the guitar preserves. The mothership exists to transform the signal. The signal exists to hold the trace. The trace is the reason for all of it.
