Origin Effects BASSRIG

The Boss RE-20 is a digital recreation of the legendary Roland RE-201 Space Echo, the tape-based delay and reverb unit that defined the sound of dub, post-punk, and experimental music from the 1970s onward. Hansen has spoken about using the Roland Space Echo’s tape saturation and warmth to impart character to synth signals, and the RE-20 provides a more road-worthy and pedalboard-friendly version of that sound. Diamond CPR-1 Compressor

The Bogner Duende is Hansen’s go-to amplifier for guitar tracking when he wants a different flavor from the Fender clean. Kemper Profilers (Live)

The Kemper Profiler is the centerpiece of Tycho’s live guitar sound. Both Scott and Zac Brown play through Kemper Profilers for all guitar tones on stage, with the Kempers storing profiled versions of their studio amp tones that can be recalled instantly. Hansen has described rebuilding the live show from the ground up with the Kempers at the center of it, replacing earlier solutions that relied on software amp modeling through Guitar Rig and Amplitube running on computers (Reverb, “Tycho Shows Us Their Extensive Touring Rig”).

The move to Kemper Profilers solved a fundamental problem for the Tycho live show: how to replicate studio-quality amp tones in a touring rig without hauling fragile, heavy, and temperamental tube amps. The Kemper’s profiling technology captures the full frequency response and dynamic behavior of a real amplifier, including how it responds to changes in pick attack and volume, making it a convincing stand-in for the Fender and Bogner amps used in the studio. Combined with the Apollo interfaces running plug-in effects and the Reaper sessions controlling automation, the Kempers form one leg of a three-part system that brings the studio sound to the stage.

The Amp-Less Approach: Guitar Rig and Amplitube

Before the Kemper era, and continuing in the studio to this day, Hansen has been a practitioner of what might be called “amp-less guitar.” In a detailed XLR8R Artist Tips feature, he laid out his complete approach to recording guitar without a physical amplifier (XLR8R, “Artist Tips: Tycho Details How to Get Quality Tones Without the Use of an Amp”).

The technique begins with a DI (Direct Input) signal. Hansen runs guitars and bass through the DI input on a Universal Audio 6176 channel strip, applying light compression on the way in to smooth out the dynamics without committing to a heavily compressed tone. This gives him a clean, uncolored recording of the guitar that can be processed extensively after the fact.

From there, he decides whether to insert an amp simulation. His preferred amp sims are Amplitube and the Control Room Pro module in Native Instruments Guitar Rig 5. The placement of the amp sim in the chain is a deliberate creative choice: if he wants a more traditional guitar sound, he places the amp sim after the effects chain, so the delay and reverb are feeding into the virtual amp the same way they would feed into a real amp in a live room. If he wants a less conventional sound, he places the amp sim earlier in the chain, shaping the tone before it passes through the effects.

After the amp sim stage, the processing becomes aggressive. Heavy compression brings out reverb tails and lengthens the sustain of each note, effectively turning plucked guitar strings into sustained washes. A Pultec-type EQ emulation, such as PSP’s NobleQ, adds life to the high end. Precision EQ from PSP Neon and transparent compression from Slate VBC further shape the tone. Finally, the signal passes through the Waves NLS (Non-Linear Summer), which emulates the subtle distortion and frequency coloring of running a signal through an analog console channel.

This approach is central to understanding the Tycho guitar sound. Most of what listeners hear as “guitar” on Tycho records was never played through a physical amplifier. The amp tones are virtual, the effects are a mix of hardware pedals and software plug-ins, and the final result is a product of extensive layering and processing rather than a captured performance of a guitar through an amp in a room.


Part Four: The Evolution of the Guitar Sound Across Albums

Past Is Prologue (2006) and Pre-Dive Era

In the earliest Tycho material, guitar was present but not yet the primary melodic voice. Hansen was working primarily with samples, software synths, and loops, and when guitar appeared, it was heavily processed to the point of being indistinguishable from the electronic elements. The DI recording approach was already in place during this period, with Hansen using amp sims and extensive plug-in processing to shape guitar tones in the box.

Dive (2011): The Guitar Emerges

Dive marked the moment when guitar moved from background texture to foreground instrument. On tracks like “A Walk,” harmonics flash like sunbeams, each note suspended in a cloud of delay and reverb. On “Coastal Brake,” acoustic fingerpicking serves as a counterpoint to arpeggiated keys and ringing echoes. The guitar on Dive is warm, round, and deeply layered, reflecting Hansen’s investment in analog outboard gear and hardware effects that began to define his sound during this period.

It was during the making of Dive that Hansen began working with Zac Brown. As Hansen has said, he “thought there should be more guitar,” and Brown’s involvement brought a different sensibility to the instrument’s role in the music. Brown’s self-taught, punk-and-indie-inflected playing style introduced a rawness and physicality that contrasted with Hansen’s more processed, texture-oriented approach.

Awake (2014): Full Analog Front End

Awake represented a significant step forward in the hardware sophistication of the guitar sound. Hansen began gravitating toward an all-analog front end during this period, investing in Neve preamps, Empirical Labs Distressors, LA-2A compressors, and Avalon VT-737 channel strips. The guitar was still being recorded via DI in many cases, but the signal was passing through high-end analog hardware before it reached the converter, imparting a warmth and dimensionality that pure in-the-box processing could not replicate.

The synth-guitar ambiguity reached new heights on Awake. As Hansen told Tape Op: “Many of the ‘synth’ parts aren’t even synths; they’re guitars. With keyboards and guitars alike processed through 100 percent wet reverb and delay, the line between instrument categories effectively dissolved.

Epoch (2016): The Band Fully Arrives

Epoch was the first Tycho album where the full band, including Zac Brown on guitar and Rory O’Connor on drums, was deeply integrated into the recording process from the start. Hansen and Brown fleshed out the album’s structure in a cabin near Lake Tahoe, working with engineer Count Eldridge to focus on distinct bass and guitar patterns. Weather introduced vocals to the Tycho project for the first time, with five of its eight songs featuring vocalist Saint Sinner. The guitar sound adapted to accommodate a human voice in the mix, pulling back in frequency range and density to leave space for lyrics and melody. Simulcast, the instrumental companion to Weather, restored the guitar to its more expansive role, with the same performances and arrangements presented without vocals.

For these albums, Hansen recorded drummer Rory O’Connor at the beginning of the process, creating a loop library of live drum breaks that would form the rhythmic foundation. The guitar was then layered over these rhythmic foundations, and the effects chain was used to integrate the organic guitar performances with the electronic and sample-based elements.

Zac Brown built a new pedalboard specifically for the Simulcast tour, reflecting the evolving needs of the live show and the specific tonal requirements of the Weather/Simulcast material.

Infinite Health (2024): Return to Roots

Infinite Health represented a deliberate return to Hansen’s earlier production methods. His stated goal was to get back to how he made music in the early 2000s, with the album going back to a bedroom electronic production style where the foundation of songs was built from electronic tools. The guitar sound on Infinite Health reflects this stripped-back approach, with warm, rounded guitars sitting within a palette of chopped-up drums and electronic textures. This approach means that a single note played on a guitar can emerge from the other end of the chain as a wide, multi-layered stereo event, with delay repeats panning across the soundstage, reverb tails filling the space between the speakers, and subtle pitch and timing differences between the left and right channels creating a sense of three-dimensional depth.

Hansen has described a technique where he takes a reverb and runs it through a distortion and a filter, then puts another reverb on it, then adds perhaps another reverb before the delay. This cascading reverb approach creates what he calls “really interesting pads” from sources that started as simple, monophonic signals (MusicTech, “Tycho Interview”). The result is the ocean-deep, immersive quality that listeners associate with the Tycho sound.

The Ursa Major Space Station SST-282, a digital reverb from 1981, is particularly important to this process. Its early digital reverb algorithm has a character that modern reverbs struggle to replicate: slightly grainy, with a distinctive metallic shimmer in the decay that adds texture and interest to sustained pads. Hansen uses it as the first reverb in a chain of effects, feeding its output through additional processing to create complex, evolving textures.


Part Six: Studio vs. Live — Bridging the Gap

The Studio Approach

In the studio, Hansen has virtually unlimited time and processing power. The guitar sound on a Tycho record is the product of extensive layering: multiple takes of the same part, each processed differently and blended together; guitar parts doubled by synths playing the same melody in different octaves; effects chains that involve ten or more individual processors in series.

The analog front end is critical. Signals pass through Neve 1076 preamps (which Hansen has used since the beginning), Empirical Labs Distressors, and various other pieces of outboard gear that impart warmth, harmonic distortion, and compression before the signal reaches the converter. The Universal Audio 6176 channel strip serves as the primary DI input for guitar and bass, providing both a clean preamp and gentle optical compression on the way in.

Software plays an equally important role. Hansen uses Soundtoys EchoBoy and PrimalTap as his most-used delay plug-ins, with Decapitator serving as an indispensable tool for adding crunch and distortion. PSP plug-ins (NobleQ for Pultec-style EQ, Neon for precision EQ) and Slate VBC for transparent compression round out the in-the-box processing chain. The Waves NLS provides console emulation, adding the subtle coloring of an analog mixing desk to the final signal (Soundtoys, “Tycho Interview: Gear, Inspiration, and the Creative Process”).

The Live Rig

Translating this studio complexity to the stage requires a fundamentally different approach. The live rig is built around three core systems:

  1. Kemper Profilers for guitar amp tones, storing profiled versions of the studio amps that can be switched between songs or even within songs.

  2. Universal Audio Apollo interfaces running UAD plug-ins in real time, providing the effects processing that in the studio comes from hardware pedals and outboard gear. Hansen has noted that he brings a limited guitar-pedal selection to live shows because almost all the effects heard on stage come via the Apollo (MusicTech, “Tycho Interview”).

  3. Reaper sessions running on a computer, controlled by Ableton Live on a second computer that coordinates the master automation syncing the set list, Reaper, visual projections, and lights (Reverb, “Tycho Shows Us Their Extensive Touring Rig”).

This system allows the live show to replicate the studio’s complex effects processing in real time while maintaining the flexibility to adapt to different venues and performance conditions. The Kemper Profilers handle the amp modeling, the Apollo handles the effects, and the Reaper/Ableton system handles the automation and synchronization that makes the whole thing work as a cohesive audiovisual experience.

Zac Brown’s personal pedalboard on stage includes more traditional stompboxes: a Keeley Compressor, a Boss tuner, two Port City Sahana boosts set for rhythm and lead overdrive levels, a Strymon El Capistan for tape delay, and two Boss GE-7 graphic equalizers for acoustic guitar (Equipboard, “Zac Brown”). This more conventional pedalboard reflects Brown’s role as the live guitarist, where immediate, hands-on control over tone is more important than the elaborate processing chains that Hansen uses in the studio.


Part Seven: Zac Brown’s Playing Style and Its Role in the Tycho Sound

Zac Brown is a self-taught guitarist whose roots are in punk and indie rock, and this background is audible in how he approaches the Tycho material. Where Hansen’s guitar work tends toward the atmospheric and textural, layering sustained chords and melody lines that dissolve into effects processing, Brown’s playing has a physicality and directness that anchors the sound in something recognizably human (Midtown Association, “Zac Brown: From Midtown to the Main Stage”).

Brown’s involvement with Tycho began during the Dive sessions, when Hansen decided the project needed more guitar presence. Before joining Tycho, Brown had been playing with his cousin Dusty Brown in the project Dusty Brown, and he was also involved with DoomBird. This background in band-oriented, performance-focused music meant that Brown brought a different energy to the Tycho sessions, one that was more about feel and dynamics than about the meticulous layering and processing that had characterized Hansen’s solo guitar work.

In the live setting, Brown’s role is particularly important. He handles the rhythmic guitar parts that drive the songs forward, while Hansen focuses on the more atmospheric lead lines and synth work. This division of labor allows the live show to maintain both the pulse and the texture of the recorded material simultaneously, something that would be impossible for a single guitarist to achieve.

Brown’s punk-influenced playing style also informs the attack and articulation of his guitar parts. His picking is more aggressive and his timing slightly more imprecise in a way that adds human variation to the otherwise heavily processed sound. This rawness is part of what Hansen values in the collaboration: it provides a counterpoint to the perfection of the electronic elements and gives the music a sense of being performed rather than programmed.

As of 2024, the live band consists of Hansen on synthesizers and guitar, Brown on guitars, Rory O’Connor on drums, and Billy Kim on bass and additional instrumentation. This four-piece configuration has been refined over years of touring, and each member’s role is precisely defined to maximize the translation of the studio sound to the stage (Wikipedia, “Tycho (musician)”).


Part Eight: The Art of Making Guitars Disappear

Perhaps the most important thing to understand about Tycho’s guitar rig is that its ultimate purpose is self-erasure. Every piece of gear in the chain, from the Origin Effects RevivalDRIVE at the input to the Strymon Deco at the output, serves the goal of transforming a guitar into something that does not sound like a guitar.

Hansen has spoken repeatedly about this philosophy. “A big part of my sound is harnessing artifacts that aren’t supposed to be there,” he told MusicTech (MusicTech, “Tycho Interview”). He plays the gear like an instrument, feeding signals into effects chains and letting what the gear does inform the performance. The noise, the distortion, the reverb tails, the pitch wobble of a degrading tape delay: these are not defects to be eliminated but materials to be cultivated.

This is why the rig is so extensive. Each pedal, each amp sim, each plug-in adds another layer of transformation between the guitar string and the listener’s ear. The Strymon Decos add tape saturation. The Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl adds pitch instability. The EHX Memory Man adds bucket-brigade degradation. The compression squashes the dynamics and brings up the noise floor. The reverb pushes the sound back in space. The delay smears it across time. By the time the signal reaches the recorder, it has passed through so many stages of transformation that the original guitar is merely a ghost, a spectral presence haunting a sound that has become something else entirely.

This is the Tycho guitar sound: not a guitar sound at all, but a sound that begins with a guitar and ends somewhere in the space between instruments, between the organic and the electronic, between what was played and what was processed. The rig is not a collection of gear. It is a machine for making music that sounds like memory feels.
