The Triton’s digital pads are the precursor to the Juno sound, present in the same functional role but lacking the specific warmth that the Juno’s physical BBD circuit would later provide.
By Dive (2011), the Juno-106’s sonic DNA is clearly present even where the specific instrument may not have been. The pad textures that define the album’s emotional character — warm, wide, sustained, chorused — are the kind of sounds that the Juno produces naturally, and they perform the same structural function throughout the record: creating the harmonic environment within which more characterful lead elements and rhythmic elements operate.
Through Awake (2014) and Epoch (2016), the Juno-106 pad function remains consistent while the palette around it evolves. The Minilogue takes prominence as a lead instrument on Epoch, but the Juno-adjacent warmth persists in the album’s harmonic layers — the soft, wide chords that give Epoch’s more ambitious arrangements their sense of spaciousness.
Weather (2019) and Simulcast (2020) mark the period when the full band’s creative contribution is most evident, and the Juno-106 sound becomes part of the ensemble fabric rather than solely the product of Hansen’s solo studio work. The Softube Model 84 is, by Hansen’s account, not merely an adequate substitute for the Juno-106 hardware but a genuinely exceptional synthesizer in its own right. Softube’s approach to modeling the Juno-106 involved detailed circuit analysis of the original hardware, with particular attention to the non-linear behavior of the BBD chorus chips and the specific saturation characteristics of the filter. The result is a plugin that, in blind listening tests by multiple publications, has been judged essentially indistinguishable from the original hardware in many musical contexts.
What distinguishes the Model 84 from other Juno-106 emulations — and there are several — is Softube’s attention to the chorus circuit’s physical behavior. The company’s circuit modeling technology captures not just the nominal frequency response and time constants of the BBD chorus but the subtle non-linearities and noise characteristics that give the original hardware its warmth. MusicTech’s 10/10 review specifically cited the chorus as the Model 84’s strongest achievement, noting that it reproduced the “life” of the original circuit in a way that competitive emulations did not.
For Hansen, the Model 84 also offers practical advantages that have become increasingly important in his post-gear-sale studio. The plugin is recall-perfect — every parameter stores with the session file and restores exactly as left. It never needs voice chip replacement or service. It runs on whatever computer is hosting the session, with no physical footprint. And it can be automated with sample-accurate MIDI, allowing the kind of parameter evolution over time that hardware can achieve only with external MIDI controllers.
The Model 84’s integration into Hansen’s workflow represents the completion of a philosophical evolution that the 2023 gear sale accelerated. Having established over years of hardware use what the Juno-106’s qualities actually are — what perceptual properties constitute “the Juno sound” and what produces them — Hansen arrived at a position where a software emulation that accurately captures those properties serves his creative needs as well as, and in some respects better than, the hardware. This is not the conclusion of someone who never understood what the hardware offered. It is the conclusion of someone who understood it so thoroughly that they could identify the essential qualities and find them, preserved, in software form.
The Broader Juno-106 Renaissance and What It Means
The Juno-106 revival of the 2010s and 2020s is not simply a matter of vintage instrument fashion. It reflects something more specific: a collective recognition, among a generation of producers who grew up in the era of digital synthesis and software production, that the Juno-106 had solved a problem that continues to be difficult to solve. The synthesizer industry spent much of the 1990s and 2000s pursuing ever-higher specifications: more voices, more modulation options, more complex synthesis architectures, higher sample rates and bit depths. What this pursuit produced, in many cases, was synthesizers of extraordinary capability and limited musical character. The perfect digital oscillator does not drift. The perfect digital filter does not saturate. The perfect digital chorus does not generate BBD noise. And the result, in the ears of the market, was not the warm polyphonic synthesizer of anyone’s imagination but a precise instrument that required enormous effort to make sound human.
The Juno-106 renaissance was, in part, a rejection of this trajectory. The instrument’s DCO architecture had been its selling point in 1984 — stable, reliable, easy to use — but forty years later, what made it valuable was precisely the analog character that surrounded those digital oscillators. The BBD chorus. The IR3109 filter. The VCA saturation. The noise floor. The accumulation of physical imperfections that together constitute what the ear receives as warmth.
Tycho’s role in this renaissance is not incidental. In the period between Dive (2011) and Infinite Health (2024), Hansen’s music served as one of the most prominent demonstrations of what the Juno-106 quality — achieved through hardware or, increasingly, through software emulation — could contribute to contemporary electronic music production. The productions Hansen makes are sonic arguments: evidence for the value of certain qualities, certain textures, certain approaches. The warmth of the Juno-106 pad, sustained across Tycho’s catalog in hundreds of hours of recorded music, makes the case through demonstration rather than through advocacy. You do not need to know what a Juno-106 is to understand, through Tycho’s music, what it offers.
The Juno-106’s Irreducible Contribution
Scott Hansen has made music with some of the most celebrated instruments in synthesizer history. His 1972 Minimoog Model D is, by his own account, the single most important synthesizer in his career — the one he will never sell, the one he reaches for first, the one that is “the closest thing I’ve ever found to a guitar in a synthesizer.” The Oberheim Four Voice FVS-1 shaped the sound of Dive and its successors in ways that no other instrument could have. The Access Virus C, the Korg Mono/Poly, the Sequential Prophet-5, the Moog Matriarch — each has contributed something essential to the Tycho catalog.
And yet the Juno-106 occupies a different kind of position among these instruments. The Minimoog is a lead instrument, a compositional tool, an extension of Hansen’s musical intuition into sound. The Juno-106 is something more foundational and less visible: the warmth in which everything else is bathed. It creates the atmosphere that makes the Minimoog’s leads feel emotionally charged rather than merely melodic. It provides the harmonic support that allows the guitar’s processed organic texture to float in the mix without anchoring. It is the reason Tycho’s music sounds the way it sounds — not because it is the most distinctive element, but because without it, the distinctive elements would not have the context they need to become themselves.

When Hansen describes Infinite Health as being “about hope for the future and a requiem for the past” — invoking the High-Water Mark passage from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, that moment of looking back at the wave’s peak before the tide pulls out — the title track’s Juno-106-inspired pad sound is not incidental to that emotional statement. It is the statement itself, made in sound. The sustained, warm, unresolved polyphony of a Juno-106 chord is one of the most evocative sounds in electronic music precisely because it sounds like something that is still happening, something that has not ended, something warm and present and hovering at the edge of becoming.
