But the final form of any Tycho record is never just Hansen’s work. The moment it enters the hands of a mixing or mastering engineer, the music encounters a different set of ears, a different set of decisions, and a different set of pressures — commercial, aesthetic, spatial — that determine how the audience ultimately hears what Hansen built. The chain of engineers who have touched Tycho records across a twenty-plus-year discography is not incidental to the sound of those records. It is constitutive of it.

What makes the Tycho post-production story interesting is not simply that Hansen works with skilled engineers. The Science of Patterns (2002) reached listeners without any formal mastering credit. Hansen was a young producer in Sacramento, working in a bedroom on headphones with gear that could hold roughly six minutes of audio. The music reflected his instincts — already warm, already textured, already pointing toward the aesthetic that would eventually define the project — but it was built entirely without professional post-production infrastructure. There was no mastering engineer. There was no separate mixing engineer. There was Hansen and his room, and whatever those could produce together.

The Science of Patterns was not commercially distributed in any significant way. It was a formative document, a proof that Hansen could write complete compositions rather than merely experiment with sounds. The engineering questions that would come to define the mature Tycho records — how to balance dynamic warmth against loudness requirements, how to carve space in a dense mix, how to translate a headphone-built production to other listening environments — had not yet arrived because the scale of the project did not yet demand answers to them.

Sunrise Projector (2004), Hansen’s first full-length album released on his own Gammaphone Records, was the first time a dedicated mastering house left a verifiable fingerprint on a Tycho release. That credit went to Eric Broyhill and Tim Pratt at Monster Lab, a Sacramento-based facility. The choice was almost certainly geographic — Hansen was still rooted in Sacramento, and working with a local house was the practical move. Monster Lab brought coherence to a record built around a Korg Triton workstation in an untreated room with inconsistent monitoring. The mastering served the corrective function it reliably serves for self-produced home recordings: leveling, frequency balance, ensuring the music could survive playback on systems the producer had never heard. That was the primary requirement, and Monster Lab delivered it.

When Merck Records picked up Sunrise Projector and reissued it as Past Is Prologue in 2006, the production credits carried over. The Merck collapse later that year closed the early Sacramento chapter, and with Hansen’s departure for San Francisco came a new set of professional relationships and a different scale of ambition. Monster Lab’s role in the story was not finished, however. Years later, Hansen would return to Eric Broyhill for mastering work, and that relationship would demonstrate something important about how the Tycho production philosophy thinks about familiarity and fresh ears.


Shaun Lopez and the Early Mixing Experiments

Before Count became the central production partner, a different engineer contributed to the mixing of some early material. Shaun Lopez — who would later become known for his own musical projects — received a Roland JP-8000 synthesizer that Hansen sold on eBay in the early years, and the connection that sale created eventually translated into mixing work. Lopez mixed several tracks from the pre-Dive catalog, including “Daydream,” “Adrift,” and “Disconnect.” His involvement represents an early instance of Hansen delegating the mixing stage to an outside voice, a practice that was still occasional and piecemeal rather than systematic. The experience of hearing his own productions through someone else’s hands contributed to Hansen’s developing understanding of what external perspectives could add — and what they could not replace.


Dave Cooley and the Dive Mastering

Dive (2011) was the album that transformed Tycho from a self-contained bedroom project into a professional recording. Ghostly International had signed Hansen and would release the album with proper distribution and press support, which meant the bar for production quality had risen substantially from the Sunrise Projector era. The album was Hansen’s most ambitious recording by a wide margin — five years in development, centered on vintage analog synthesizers he had spent years acquiring, and featuring the first significant guitar contributions from Zac Brown.

The mastering for Dive went to Dave Cooley, an independent mastering engineer based in Los Angeles with a substantial resume across the indie and electronic spectrum. Cooley’s work on Dive served the specific function that the album’s density required: its layered analog textures needed a mastering chain that could find the ceiling between natural, breathable dynamics and the loudness floor that streaming and physical formats required in 2011.

Dive arrived at a difficult moment in the history of mastering. The industry’s decade-long push toward maximized RMS levels — what critics and engineers had taken to calling the loudness war — was at or near its peak. Electronic music was not exempt. The practical pressure on any mastering engineer working on music that valued dynamic range was how to honor those dynamics without producing a master that sounded thin or quiet by comparison to competing releases on the same playlists and radio formats. Cooley’s work navigated that tension competently. The album is not a loudness-war casualty. Quiet sections retain their character. Climaxes resolve with the impact the arrangements intended. By the standards of 2011, Dive was a dynamically alive record — and that was not an accident.

Cooley’s involvement with Dive was also notable for what it was not. It was a sequential, arm’s-length mastering relationship: Hansen produced and recorded, Cooley mastered, the album came out. There was no collaborative iteration, no shared reference to what the mix was trying to do dynamically, no ongoing relationship that carried into future projects. That model — external finishing applied to a finished product — would give way to something categorically different as Count entered the picture.


Count Enters: The Partnership That Defined the Sound

The name most inseparable from the Tycho post-production story is not a name at all in the conventional sense. Mikael Eldridge has worked under the moniker Count for his entire professional career, and it is under that name that he appears in the credits of the records that constitute the heart of the Tycho discography. His resume extends to work with DJ Shadow, Radiohead, New Order, and Blackalicious, situating him within a lineage of independent music engineering that Hansen’s own aesthetic sensibilities trace. But none of that resume material quite captures what Count came to mean to the Tycho project. He became, over the course of more than a decade, the outside perspective that Hansen’s inside work required to realize itself fully.

Count’s involvement with Tycho began on Dive, where his role was a broader form of engineering collaboration that developed into the central production partnership of Hansen’s career. The specific nature of what Count contributed evolved across albums, but the core function never changed: he provided the objective ear that Hansen, by definition, could not provide for himself. Hansen builds music from the inside out. He works in extraordinary depth with individual sounds, layering and re-layering through months of intimate work with the same material. By the time a Tycho album reaches the mixing stage, Hansen’s ears have adapted in ways that make objective hearing nearly impossible. He knows what things are supposed to sound like so thoroughly that he can no longer hear what they actually sound like. Count provided the reset — not by ignoring what Hansen intended, but by hearing it as a listener rather than as its maker.

Hansen has described Count’s approach in direct terms: Count could take his vision, his framework, his intentions, and “dial it in and get it perfect.” This is the language of an artist who has learned to trust a collaborator’s craft without surrendering creative authority. Hansen sets the direction. Count realizes it. That distinction — direction from one person, execution from another — is what allowed the partnership to function without compromise. Hansen did not have to interrupt the deep immersion that produced the music’s character in order to execute the mixing stage. Count handled the execution without disturbing the immersion.


The Central Mixing Challenge: Warm, Mid-Rangey Sounds That Fight for Space

Count has been unusually explicit, in public statements, about what makes mixing Tycho difficult. In documentation related to the Epoch mixing sessions, he described the challenge with precision: “All the Tycho sounds end up as warm, mid-rangey sounds, which can be a problem when mixing to make a song feel present and cut through.”

This statement is worth unpacking because it names the central technical contradiction in the entire Tycho production philosophy. The process that generates the sound — analog synthesizers saturated through transformer-based preamps, post-reverb compression that raises reverb tails to structural prominence, cascading gain stages through vintage hardware — produces material that is, frequency-wise, stacked in the same region. The Minimoog’s characteristic low-midrange warmth, the Juno’s midrange chorus, the guitar processed through optical compression and plate reverb, the bass lines built from monophonic synth layers: all of these elements are doing their most important work in the same frequency band. They each sound beautiful in isolation. Together, in a mix, they compete. Without careful subtractive EQ, aggressive spatial management, and precise dynamic control at the mixing stage, a Tycho record becomes a wall of congested warmth — present, dense, pleasing at low resolution, but ultimately undifferentiated.

Count’s mixing work across the Dive, Awake, Epoch, and Weather albums represents a sustained engagement with this problem. Each album posed it differently, at different scales of density and complexity, with different instrumentation requiring different solutions. The consistency of the result — records that manage to sound simultaneously warm and clear, dense and breathable — is the mark of a mixer who developed, over years of working with the same material, an increasingly refined toolkit for solving a specific and recurring challenge.


Awake: Live Drums Demand Separation

For Awake (2014), Count’s mixing task was complicated by the album’s fundamental structural evolution from Dive. Where Dive’s density was the density of layered synthesizers and processed guitar that blended organically into each other, Awake needed separation. Rory O’Connor’s live drums — the most prominent departure from the Dive approach — had to exist in a distinct spatial position within the mix while still inhabiting the warm, enveloping atmosphere that defined the Tycho sound. The kick drum needed to punch through synthesizer layers that occupied the same frequency range. The snare needed presence without becoming harsh. The hi-hats and cymbals needed air without becoming bright in a way that clashed with the analog warmth of everything surrounding them.

Count’s approach carved that separation without sacrificing atmosphere. Awake is simultaneously the most forward and rhythmically punchy record in the Tycho catalog up to that point and the one that most evidently inherited the textural warmth of Dive. The fact that both things are simultaneously true is not a compositional accident. It is the result of mixing that applied subtractive EQ with sufficient precision to create frequency space for the live drums while protecting the tonal character of the synthesizer and guitar layers. The album’s commercial breakthrough — debuting at number 23 on the Billboard 200, an almost unimaginable position for a purely instrumental record on an independent label — was partly a function of that sonic accessibility. Count’s mix made Awake easy to hear in the full sense: immediately present, without requiring the kind of attentive listening that Dive rewarded but also demanded.

Hansen described Awake as “the first true Tycho record.” Part of what made it true in that sense was Count’s influence on the sonic philosophy. Count had been pushing Hansen away from what Hansen himself called “the Instagram approach to making music: let’s dirty everything up, let’s make it sound bold.” Count’s counteradvice was radical in its simplicity: sell everything, get a simple setup, trust the sounds. The discipline of reduction that shaped Awake’s arrangements also shaped its mixing, and both were expressions of the same principle — that clarity and presence are more difficult to achieve than density, and more rewarding when achieved.


The 2018 Studio Renovation: Acoustic Design as Creative Infrastructure

One of the less-discussed dimensions of Count’s role in the Tycho production history is his contribution to the physical space where the music is made. Mixing engineers do not typically design their clients’ studios. Count did.

In 2018, ahead of the Weather recording sessions, Hansen undertook a significant renovation of his San Francisco home studio. The acoustic treatment — the panels, diffusers, and bass traps that shape how the room responds to sound and how sound translates from speakers to ears — was designed by Count. This was not a neutral technical service. The monitoring environment shapes every decision a producer makes about sound. A room with specific frequency anomalies in its response causes the producer to compensate for those anomalies unconsciously while mixing, and those compensations appear in the final record. A room with consistent, calibrated response produces decisions that translate reliably to other listening environments.

By designing Hansen’s acoustic treatment, Count was ensuring two things simultaneously. First, that the room where the music was composed and recorded would give Hansen accurate information about what he was making — information that his previous untreated or partially treated rooms could not consistently provide. Second, and more significantly for the collaborative process, that Hansen’s monitoring environment and Count’s own mixing environment would now be calibrated against consistent acoustic reference points. When both collaborators are hearing sound in rooms that behave similarly, the decisions made in one room translate predictably to the other. The gap between what Hansen thought his mixes sounded like and what Count heard when he opened the sessions would narrow dramatically.

The practical consequence for the workflow was transformative. The 2018 renovation eliminated the need for Hansen to travel to a separate mixing facility. Count would visit Hansen’s studio every few weeks to mix newly created material in the same room where it had been produced — allowing production and mixing to develop in tandem rather than sequentially. “Now it’s great, I don’t have to travel anywhere to record,” Hansen said after the renovation. “We have a workflow where I don’t even have to leave my house anymore.”

This integration of the mixing stage into the production environment changed what Count’s role meant for the albums that followed. On Weather and Simulcast, the mixing happened in the same physical space where the recording had taken place, with acoustic treatment that Count had specified. The coherence between production environment and mixing environment was total. It was as close as a collaborative production relationship can get to a unified creative space.


Epoch: The Dangerous 2-BUS+ and the Three-Dimensional Mix

The mixing process for Epoch (2016) represents the most technically ambitious post-production work in the project’s history to that point. They incorporated the Dangerous Music 2-BUS+ analog summing mixer into the chain — routing stems from Pro Tools through sixteen channels of analog circuitry before summing to stereo. For monitoring and digital-to-analog conversion within that chain, they used the Dangerous CONVERT-8, one of the better converters available for preserving analog character through the conversion stage.

Count was explicit about the technical rationale. The analog summing delivered “better punch, better stereo imagery, and a better sense of three-dimensionality” compared to in-the-box summing. That three-dimensionality mattered specifically because of what Epoch was: the densest and most complex production in the Tycho catalog, a record with heavier synthesizer saturation, more aggressive arrangements, and more rhythmic complexity than anything Hansen had previously attempted. Dense, layered material benefits from analog summing in ways that open, sparse arrangements do not. When multiple channels of warm, harmonically saturated audio are routed through analog circuitry rather than summed mathematically in software, the resulting stereo image has a spatial quality — a sense that elements occupy distinct positions in a dimensional field — that pure digital summing struggles to achieve. The Dangerous 2-BUS+ kept Epoch’s densely layered arrangements from collapsing into each other and losing definition.

The two months Count spent on the Epoch mix reflects the scope of the challenge. He is credited not just as mixing engineer but as mastering engineer and production consultant on the album — an acknowledgment of how deeply his perspective had become woven into the record’s final form. At the production consultant level, the distinction between “mixing” and “shaping the album” becomes meaningfully blurred.

Epoch received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2017. The nomination belonged to the music, but it also validated what the full production chain — recording through analog summing through mastering — had accomplished together. It was the highest-profile confirmation yet that the Tycho post-production approach was producing results at a level the broader industry recognized.


Velvet Hammer Mastering: The House Sound of the Middle Period

Count’s mastering work through Velvet Hammer Mastering has touched multiple Tycho albums, and the consistency of his fingerprints at the mastering stage across those records constitutes something like a house sound for the middle period of the discography. The Awake and Epoch records in particular carry a sonic signature at the mastering stage that reflects an intimate knowledge of the material — not a third-party perspective applied to an unfamiliar record, but the finishing work of someone who had been involved in the mixing stage and understood the dynamic decisions embedded in every arrangement choice.

This runs counter to the traditional argument for separating mixing and mastering. The conventional logic holds that mastering requires fresh ears — distance from the material that allows objective level and EQ decisions. After weeks or months of mixing, even a highly skilled engineer needs to encounter the record as an outside listener in order to hear it accurately. The argument for Count mastering records he has also mixed is that his relationship to the material is deep enough to override the standard fresh-ears concern. He knows what the quiet passages are supposed to sound like and why. He knows where the dynamic arc of the album is meant to peak. He is not inferring intent from the audio. He built the mix with those intentions in his hands.

The practical consequence was mastering that served the material’s values rather than imposing external commercial standards. Tycho records from this period do not sound as if they have been run through a limiter set to maximize loudness at the expense of dynamics. They sound like records where someone who cared about the dynamic range protected it at every stage through the chain — mixing and mastering both. The LUFS targets are not luxuriously wide; these records had to compete in streaming environments where algorithmic normalization and perceived loudness matter commercially. But the headroom that existed in the mix was not squandered at the mastering stage.


The Loudness War Context: How Tycho Albums Have Been Mastered

The question of dynamic range — how much difference exists between the loudest and quietest moments in a record — runs as a subtext through the entire Tycho production history, because Hansen’s aesthetic philosophy has always been in direct tension with the commercial pressures that pushed mastering engineers toward maximized loudness for much of the 2000s and early 2010s.

The loudness war was driven by a specific, measurable incentive structure. When a louder record appeared next to a quieter record on the same radio station or playlist, the louder record seemed better — more present, more powerful, more emotionally immediate — to casual listeners who did not register that the difference was a function of loudness rather than quality. Labels and artists responded by pushing their mastering engineers to produce masters with ever-higher RMS levels, sacrificing dynamic range to achieve loudness. By the late 2000s, many commercial releases had been compressed and limited to the point where the difference between the loudest and quietest moments was functionally negligible. The music had become what engineers called “brickwalled” — a solid wall of loudness with no peaks, no valleys, no breathing room.

Tycho records from the Dive era onward have consistently resisted this tendency, not as a principled stand but as a natural consequence of the production philosophy. The cumulative analog processing that generates the sound — transformer-based preamps, tape saturation, optical and FET compression used as tone-shaping tools rather than level-control tools — maintains dynamic variation throughout the signal chain. Each gain stage responds to input level in ways that preserve the relationship between loud and quiet rather than eliminating it. By the time a Tycho album reaches the mastering stage, its dynamic range is substantially intact, and protecting it becomes the natural objective for both Count and Hansen.

Dave Cooley’s mastering on Dive reflects the expectations of 2011, when the pressure to hit loudness targets for electronic music releases was still significant. The album is not loud by loudness-war standards, but it sits in the range that was considered standard for independent electronic music at the time — more compressed than the Awake and Epoch records that followed. The shift in approach is audible across the discography: as Count’s influence at both the mixing and mastering stages deepened, and as his acoustic treatment gave Hansen a room where he could make more accurate decisions earlier in the process, the dynamic approach became more intentional and more protected.

The post-streaming era changed the mastering calculus for all music. Spotify, Apple Music, and other major platforms apply algorithmic loudness normalization, turning down extremely loud masters to match quieter ones in playback level, typically targeting around -14 LUFS. The practical incentive to maximize loudness in mastering has diminished substantially — an extremely loud master is simply turned down, gaining nothing. For Tycho, whose production philosophy had always prioritized dynamics over loudness, this normalization era was a retrospective validation. The mastering decisions that had preserved dynamic range throughout the Ghostly and Mom+Pop/Ninja Tune eras now translate into streaming contexts without competitive disadvantage. The records sound as Hansen and Count intended them to sound because the streaming platforms stopped penalizing records that sound that way.


The Vocal Mix Problem: Count and Weather

Weather (2019) introduced a technical challenge none of the previous Tycho albums had encountered: a human voice had to live inside music designed as purely instrumental. The structural difficulty this posed for mixing was considerable, and it was not only a mixing problem. It was a problem embedded in the production itself, which Hansen had spent fifteen years optimizing for the complete absence of the frequency range where a human voice most needs to breathe.

Hannah Cottrell, performing as Saint Sinner, sang on five of the album’s eight tracks. Her vocal performances were layered six to twelve tracks deep — separate takes panned at different volumes and processed with different effects to create the dimensional, atmospheric vocal presence that characterizes the album. The mixing challenge was creating space for this dimensional presence inside a production that had been built, from the ground up, to occupy every available frequency register with warm, mid-range-heavy synthesizer textures and processed guitar.

Count’s approach to this problem was anchored in a blunt articulation of the stakes: “If this is truly vocal music, you can’t hide the vocals.” The implication was that every compromise in the direction of protecting the instrumental texture at the expense of vocal presence would undermine the album’s fundamental character. Weather had to decide what it was. If it was vocal music, the vocals had to win.

Winning, in this context, meant aggressive subtractive EQ across the instrumental tracks — carving out space in the midrange without making the synthesizer textures sound hollow or the guitar layers sound thin. The vocal had to pop through a wall of warm, harmonically saturated material that had been designed over fifteen years to fill every available frequency register. The solution involved the Sonnox Oxford Dynamic EQ in a specific configuration: rather than applying a static EQ cut to the instrumental tracks, the dynamic EQ applied its cut only when Cottrell’s voice was active, preserving the lushness of the synth layers when the voice was absent while creating the necessary space when it was present. The vocal frequency range was effectively sidechain-carved in real time.

The result on the album is a vocal that is simultaneously present and embedded. Cottrell’s voice does not sit isolated on top of the music. It inhabits the same acoustic space. That quality is a mixing achievement as much as a performance achievement — the EQ carving was precise enough to create presence without being noticeable as carving. Weather received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2020, Tycho’s second such nomination.


Mastering Weather: Eric Broyhill Returns

A detail that surfaces in the Weather production credits is significant in the context of the broader mastering story: mastering on Weather was handled by Eric Broyhill at Monsterlab Audio, the same engineer who had mastered Sunrise Projector twenty years earlier. The return to Broyhill for Weather was not sentimental. It reflected the operational logic that Hansen had articulated about when external mastering adds value.

The Weather sessions were unusual in the Tycho production history in several ways. The vocal element was genuinely new territory. The material had been built differently — instrumentals first, vocals added in a second phase — which meant the compositional and the mixing processes had developed somewhat separately from each other. And the album represented a departure significant enough that the perspective of someone not steeped in the accumulated conventions of the Tycho sound had specific value. Broyhill’s fresh ears were not coming to a record he had heard a thousand times through the mixing stage. He was coming to it as a mastering engineer encountering completed material, which is precisely the circumstance where the traditional mastering model is most appropriate.

The Weather mastering also has to be understood in relation to the streaming normalization standards that were, by 2019, well-established across all major platforms. At -14 LUFS target normalization, the commercial pressure toward aggressive limiting had substantially diminished. Broyhill’s work on Weather could prioritize the album’s dynamic character without worrying that a quiet master would be commercially disadvantaged. The warmth and space that Weather needed at the mastering stage — to preserve the vocal presence that Count had worked so hard to create, and to honor the dynamic range that Hansen’s production had always prioritized — was achievable without commercial penalty.


Hansen’s Own Mixing: The Evolution of Self-Sufficiency

Beneath the collaborator story runs a parallel narrative about Hansen’s development as a mixing engineer in his own right. He has always done the substantive pre-mixing production work himself — balancing levels, establishing spatial relationships within REAPER, making the EQ and compression decisions that define the sound before Count or anyone else encounters the session. But the line between what Hansen handles himself and what he delegates has shifted across the discography in ways that matter.

On the early releases, Hansen mixed entirely in-house by default. There was no outside mixing engineer available or financially accessible. The mix on The Science of Patterns and Sunrise Projector was whatever Hansen had built in a room on headphones. This was not a philosophical position. It was the practical reality of a self-releasing bedroom producer with no professional infrastructure around him.

By the time of Dive, Hansen’s own mixing instincts had developed substantially. A decade of production experience — working daily in headphones, building and refining signal chains, learning the behavior of specific equipment through thousands of hours of use — had given him technical competence that allowed his collaboration with Count to function as a genuine partnership rather than a rescue operation. Hansen was not delivering rough mixes to Count for salvage. He was delivering developed, intentional productions that Count refined and realized at a professional standard.

The 2018 studio renovation and Count’s acoustic treatment design changed the terms of that partnership further. When the monitoring environment is calibrated to the same standard as the mixing engineer’s reference environment, the producer’s decisions and the mixer’s decisions begin to converge. Hansen started making mixing-quality decisions earlier in the process because his room was finally giving him mixing-quality information. The sessions arriving at Count’s mixing stage were more realized and more precisely balanced than they would have been from an acoustically deficient room. This is not a trivial change in the creative dynamic. It shifts the collaborative center of gravity toward Hansen’s end of the process.

Hansen does not describe himself as a world-class mixer in the sense that Count is a world-class mixer. But his taste governs every decision Count makes. Home Studio vs. Professional Studio: When Does Hansen Go Elsewhere?

The Tycho production history is almost entirely a home studio story. Hansen has rarely worked in a commercial recording facility for extended creative sessions, and when he has, it has typically been for a specific component of a record rather than as the primary production environment.

The early Sacramento work was by necessity entirely home-based. There was no budget for professional studio time, and the music was not being built in a way that required the resources of a commercial facility. The bedroom and then the garage served as laboratory and production environment simultaneously.

The San Francisco years introduced a modestly more professional setup incrementally. Hansen added proper preamps, better monitoring, and eventually the acoustic treatment that Count designed. But the studio remained his home studio. Even as the gear grew more sophisticated — Neve preamps, professional converters, Genelec monitors — the fundamental configuration was a musician making music in a residential space.

The exceptions are instructive. For Epoch, the live drum sessions that Rory O’Connor performed as source material for the loop library were recorded at Virtue and Vice Studio by engineer Anthony Gallo, and at Panoramic Studios in Stinson Beach by Peter Franco. The decision to record drums in a professional room rather than at home reflects the acoustic reality of drum recording: capturing a live drum kit accurately requires a room with sufficient size, isolation, and treatment that most home studios cannot provide. The drums were the one component of the Epoch production that needed to go outside.

The same principle governed the Awake sessions, where O’Connor’s live drum performances were tracked in proper studio environments — including the Santa Cruz sessions that pulled the band out of Hansen’s home studio entirely for the collaborative writing phase. The Lake Tahoe cabin sessions were an exception to the home-studio model in a different sense: Hansen rebuilt his studio in the cabin specifically to work away from the familiar environment. The point was not to work in a professional facility but to work in a different space. He brought the home studio with him.

Weather saw the most integrated version of the home studio model, enabled by the 2018 renovation. With Count visiting regularly to mix as tracks were produced, rather than encountering a finished album after the fact, the home studio became the mixing room as well as the production room. The professional and the domestic were no longer distinct in any meaningful way.

The Infinite Health (2024) sessions represented a return to the most stripped-back version of the home studio model. After selling nearly 100 pieces of equipment in September 2023 — a collection valued at over $160,000 — Hansen was working with a dramatically simplified setup: a Roland Juno and Korg Minilogue as the primary hardware synthesizers, augmented by software emulations of instruments he had sold. The philosophy was deliberate. Hansen wanted to return to “how I made music in the early 2000s” — the bedroom electronic production style that had preceded the hardware accumulation. The home studio’s reduced complexity became a creative tool.


Peter Franco: The Live FOH Engineer and the Studio Connection

One of the more unusual relationships in the Tycho production ecosystem is the one between the studio mixing chain and the live front-of-house engineering. Most artists treat these as entirely separate domains — the studio record is one thing, the live sound is another — but in the Tycho world, the same analog-first philosophy that governs the recording process extends into the live environment, and the engineer responsible for realizing it live is Peter Franco.

Franco’s credentials are formidable in ways that connect directly to the world Hansen operates in. He worked on Daft Punk’s landmark 2006–2007 live tour and received a Grammy Award for his engineering on the resulting Alive 2007 album. He subsequently worked on Random Access Memories, winning a Grammy for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical alongside Mick Guzauski, Florian Lagatta, Daniel Lerner, and Bob Ludwig. In addition to his Tycho work, Franco is credited as a live drum recording engineer on Epoch itself — tracking some of O’Connor’s drum performances at Panoramic Studios in Stinson Beach. His connection to the project predates his role as live FOH engineer, making the studio-to-stage relationship more continuous than the conventional division between recording and touring would suggest.

What Franco brought to the Tycho live setup was a philosophical transformation as much as a technical one. The early Tycho live experience had been built in the box — digital processing throughout, with the analog character of the studio sound approximated through plugins rather than realized through hardware. When Franco joined the touring operation for the Epoch era, he redesigned the approach from the ground up. The FOH system shifted to analog hardware processing. Digital mixing at the console level gave way to an analog-centered chain. Automation gave way to real-time, hands-on mixing in what observers described as a dub mixer’s approach — Franco actively shaping the sound from moment to moment, his decisions part of what each performance became.

The outboard gear Franco deployed at front of house mirrored the studio chain in its philosophy and, in some cases, its specific equipment. Empirical Labs Distressors — the same hardware compressors present in Hansen’s studio rack — were applied to key channels in the live mix. A Teletronix LA-2A provided smooth optical compression on critical sources. Avalon VT-737 tube channel strips, each combining a Class A preamp, opto-compressor, sweepable EQ, and output control in a single unit, processed the drum channels. Additional outboard from BAE Audio, SSL, Meris, and Chameleon Labs completed a touring processing chain that was, by any measure, extraordinary in its scale and quality for a band of Tycho’s size.

The acoustic consequence was significant. Hansen described Franco as the “fifth member of the band” — an acknowledgment that the FOH engineer’s interpretive decisions were shaping the emotional trajectory of each show in ways that went beyond technical reproduction. The “headphone music” that Hansen had built over fifteen years was being translated into a visceral, physical, room-filling experience through Franco’s hands. The heavy studio reverbs that had previously dominated the live sound were stripped back. The acoustic drums were pushed to the foreground. The analog processing added harmonic saturation that bound the electronic and organic elements together in the room in a way that digital approximations could not achieve.

This relationship between the studio mix and the live sound is not a simple translation. Franco was not reproducing Count’s studio mix through a PA system. He was making a live version of the same music — informed by the same analog philosophy, governed by the same aesthetic priorities, but adapted to the specific acoustic realities of each venue and shaped by the real-time decisions of a skilled engineer who understood the music well enough to interpret it rather than merely reproduce it. The studio and the live FOH were parallel realizations of the same sound world, each shaped by its specific medium.

For Zac Brown’s guitar specifically, the Kemper Profiling Amp allowed the elimination of physical amplifiers from the stage entirely. No speaker cabinets, no microphones, no stage volume from a guitar amp. The Kemper outputs directly to the FOH console, and the guitar sound the audience hears comes from the PA system — which Franco treats with the same analog processing he applies to everything else in the mix. The guitar’s tonal character is therefore consistent throughout the venue, not dependent on the specific acoustic properties of the spot where a physical amp would have been positioned on stage.

Chris Taylor and the Infinite Health Shift

The arrival of Chris Taylor as co-producer and mixer on Infinite Health (2024) marked a genuine inflection point in the Tycho production history. Taylor, best known as a member and producer of Grizzly Bear — and specifically for his work on Veckatimest (2009) and Shields (2012) — was the first outside creative voice to share a production credit with Hansen on a Tycho album. That is a historically significant distinction. Every previous Tycho record had been, at the production level, Hansen’s work: outside engineers shaped the finishing stages, but the production decisions belonged to a single creative authority.

Taylor’s involvement was not accidental. He was brought in at a specific moment — after the 2023 gear purge, when Hansen had sold nearly 100 pieces of studio equipment and was deliberately rebuilding his process from simpler foundations. The stripped-back setup for Infinite Health was closest to Hansen’s pre-Dive methodology: a handful of hardware synthesizers, trusted software plugins, and REAPER as the primary compositional environment. The production philosophy was a conscious return to “bedroom electronic production style,” with beats, breaks, and rhythmic foundations built from purely electronic tools before any organic elements were added.

For that approach to translate to a finished record at a professional output level, Taylor’s perspective was valuable in the same way Count’s perspective had always been valuable — but with a crucial difference. Count’s contribution to the Tycho production had always been rooted in an intimate knowledge of the aesthetic developed over years of close collaboration. By the time of Weather, Count had been part of the Tycho creative process for nearly a decade. He knew the material before he mixed it. Taylor brought something more discontinuous: genuinely different ears that had not adapted to Hansen’s sound through years of exposure.

Taylor’s mixing on Infinite Health reflects that freshness. The record sounds like Tycho — the warmth is present, the spatial depth is present, the signature synthesizer textures are present — but there is an openness to the mix, a different approach to what gets space and what gets compressed, that reflects a mixer encountering the material without the weight of prior Tycho-specific expectations. Where Count had developed his approach to the Tycho mixing problem over albums and years, Taylor was encountering it with a fresh set of problem-solving instincts.

The co-production credit signals something beyond the mixing role. Taylor was involved in creative decisions during the album — not merely in the technical realization of Hansen’s completed vision. The precise extent of that creative involvement is not fully documented in public statements, but the credit itself is the important marker: it represents the moment when the Tycho production model, premised since the beginning on Hansen as the sole creative authority with technical collaborators around him, formally acknowledged an outside creative voice in the production stage itself.


The Philosophy of When to Bring in Outside Ears

Hansen has been thoughtful, across many interviews over many years, about the specific question of when outside engineering intervention adds value and when it does not. His position is neither dogmatic nor arbitrary. It reflects a nuanced understanding of what familiarity does to a producer’s perception and what different kinds of outside perspective can and cannot provide.

The argument for integrating outside ears at the mixing stage rather than the mastering stage — which is the essential structure of the Count relationship — is rooted in knowledge and timing. When the mixing engineer has been present throughout the production process, they understand the dynamic intentions embedded in the arrangement. They know which passages are supposed to be quiet and why. They know where the album’s emotional arc peaks and what it needs at that peak. The mastering stage, as a separate function performed by a different engineer after the fact, risks applying solutions to problems that the mix was explicitly designed to address — pushing the dynamic range in directions the mix was built to avoid, brightening frequencies that were intentionally dark, tightening a reverb tail that was meant to extend.

The counter-argument Hansen acknowledges is the limitation of his own familiarity with his material. After months of intimate work on the same recordings, a producer’s ears adapt. Details that would be immediately obvious to a fresh listener become invisible. Frequency biases that accumulate gradually through the mixing process become invisible because the producer’s reference has shifted to match what they built. For material that is particularly dense, or particularly long in development, an external perspective provides what internal familiarity cannot: the capacity to be genuinely surprised by what the material actually sounds like.

This is the function that Broyhill’s mastering has periodically served — on Sunrise Projector when Hansen lacked the infrastructure to finish the record himself, and on Weather when the genuinely new territory of vocal music warranted ears that were not steeped in accumulated Tycho conventions. Hansen described the logic to Tape Op: when the collaborative production and mixing process is deep and continuous — when Count has been inside the sessions, when the acoustic environment is calibrated, when the mix decisions were made in full knowledge of the material’s arc — mastering through Velvet Hammer is the most coherent path. When circumstances create distance between the mixing and finishing stages, or when the material is genuinely novel, external mastering provides the reset the music needs.

The working principle that emerges across the full discography is consistent, if not always immediately obvious: the more continuous and collaborative the production process has been, the more appropriate it is to extend that continuity into the finishing stages. The more discontinuous or unfamiliar the territory, the more value a genuinely external perspective adds. Hansen has applied that principle, with variation but without contradiction, from Sunrise Projector through Infinite Health.


The Evolution from Self-Mixed Records to Professional Partnerships

Tracing the arc from The Science of Patterns (2002) to Infinite Health (2024) reveals a trajectory that is not simply about professional advancement — about graduating from bedroom production to major-label-adjacent distribution, or from basic mastering to Grammy-nominated finishing. It is about Hansen developing, over two decades, an increasingly sophisticated understanding of what he needs and cannot provide for himself.

The earliest records were self-mixed by default. Hansen had no alternative. The question of whether to use an outside mixing engineer did not arise because no outside mixing engineer was available. The music was whatever Hansen’s headphones and his untreated room and his developing instincts could produce together. That those early records have the character they have — intimate, detailed, designed for close listening — is partly a consequence of those constraints. The headphone monitoring that necessity imposed became, over time, a methodology. The warmth that untreated rooms and modest equipment introduced became, over time, a signature.

The Dive era established the first systematic professional relationships in the post-production chain. Dave Cooley’s mastering gave the album the professional finishing its Ghostly International release required. Count’s mixing gave it a spatial and dynamic clarity that Hansen’s internal perspective could not have generated alone. Both relationships were sequential in the traditional sense — Hansen produced, outside engineers finished. But the seeds of the deeper collaboration were already present, because Count’s mixing on Dive planted the understanding that an outside engineer who genuinely got the material could serve it rather than merely polish it.

The Awake and Epoch years represented the deepest integration. Count’s acoustic treatment design brought the mixing environment into the production environment. The iterative workflow — Count visiting every few weeks to mix newly produced material rather than encountering a finished album — made the boundary between production and mixing genuinely permeable. The Dangerous 2-BUS+ analog summing on Epoch introduced hardware into the mixing chain that reflected a shared understanding between Hansen and Count about what the music’s density required. The mastering, done through Velvet Hammer after the mixing, extended the same knowledge rather than introducing a discontinuity.

Weather introduced the Broyhill return for mastering, representing a thoughtful application of the fresh-ears principle to genuinely new territory. Infinite Health introduced Taylor as a co-producer and mixer, representing something more significant: the acknowledgment that another creative voice, brought in early enough and trusted deeply enough, could shape what Tycho becomes rather than merely how it sounds.

What the arc reveals is an artist learning, across twenty years and nine records, that collaboration is not a concession to limitation. It is a tool. Hansen has never stopped making his music’s core decisions himself. He has never surrendered the aesthetic authority that makes Tycho recognizably Tycho through dramatic shifts in personnel, technology, and sonic direction.
