The effects chains are populated with physical hardware: Strymon pedals, Roland Space Echoes, Ursa Major Space Stations. But the recording medium is digital. Hansen records into REAPER, his DAW of choice, which he has described as “the Swiss Army knife for audio” and praised for its efficiency, visual workflow, and extensibility (MusicTech).

This is not a nostalgic position. Hansen is not trying to recreate the experience of recording to tape. He is trying to capture the harmonic richness of analog sound sources with the flexibility and recall capability of digital recording. The analog stage provides the warmth, the harmonic complexity, the unpredictability. The digital stage provides the precision, the editability, the ability to maintain a session across multiple machines. In his studio, both of his computers run REAPER with each project open in its own tab, allowing him to move fluidly between sessions (Tape Op #123).

The Signal Chain: How Analog Meets Digital

The physical recording path in Hansen’s studio reflects this philosophy at every junction. A typical signal chain runs from the analog source – a synthesizer, a guitar through pedals – into outboard processing, then through high-quality analog-to-digital conversion into REAPER.

The preamps are a critical link. Hansen uses a pair of Neve 1076 preamps, which are essentially the same circuit as the legendary 1073 but with switch-selectable gain rather than rotary knobs. He has spoken specifically about why he favors these units: “the warmth of their distortion” and the fact that “you can really blast them without the sound breaking down or becoming harsh” (MusicTech). This is a revealing detail. Hansen is not using the Neve preamps as transparent gain stages. He is using them as coloration devices, pushing signal into the transformers to generate harmonic distortion that adds body and depth to the sound before it ever reaches the converter.

For conversion, Hansen uses a Lynx Aurora, which he credits with contributing to the “soft, creamy texture” of his recordings (MusicTech). The Aurora is known in professional circles for its musical, slightly warm conversion character – neither the surgical precision of an Apogee nor the aggressive coloration of some boutique converters, but a middle path that preserves the analog character of the source while delivering clean digital files.

For vocal recording on the Weather album, Hansen paired a Neumann U87 Ai with the Neve preamp, running into the 1176 compressor section of a Universal Audio 6176 Vintage Channel Strip (Universal Audio Blog). This chain – ribbon or condenser mic into transformer-based preamp into optical or FET compression – is a classic recording approach, but Hansen’s specific choices reflect his priorities: warmth first, clarity second, brightness last.

The Warmth-Over-Brightness Sonic Priority

Hansen has been candid about the fact that his sonic priorities can create mixing challenges. He has noted that “all the Tycho sounds end up as warm, mid-rangey sounds, which can be a problem when mixing to make a song feel present and cut through” (MusicTech). This is a revealing admission. Most producers fight to add warmth to thin or digital-sounding sources. Hansen has the opposite problem: his sources are so saturated with harmonic warmth that he must work to carve out definition and presence without sacrificing the fundamental character that makes them sound like Tycho.

This warmth is not accidental. It is the cumulative result of what Hansen calls “an artifact of several levels of effecting” – starting with a synth that already has a warm tone, then hitting an analog delay like the Roland Space Echo for tape saturation, then running through transformer-based preamps that add their own harmonic distortion (MusicTech). Each stage adds a layer of harmonic complexity, rolling off high-frequency content and emphasizing the midrange where the ear perceives warmth and body. By the time the signal reaches the converter, it has been through three or four stages of analog coloration.

Dynamic Range Preservation

Tycho records have a quality that is increasingly rare in modern music: they breathe. The music has dynamics. Quiet passages are genuinely quiet. Climaxes arrive with real impact because they have somewhere to go. This is not an accident. Hansen’s recording approach inherently preserves dynamic range because he is working with real analog instruments and processing them through hardware that responds dynamically to input level.

When Hansen pushes a synth signal into a Neve preamp, the distortion character changes with the level. When a note decays through a Space Echo, the tape saturation diminishes as the signal weakens. These are not static processes. They are level-dependent behaviors that maintain the relationship between loud and soft, between attack and sustain, between presence and absence. The result is music that sounds warm and open rather than crushed and fatiguing – a direct consequence of building sounds from analog sources that respond organically to dynamics.


Part Two: Specific Techniques

Reverb as a Compositional Tool

If there is a single technique that defines the Tycho sound above all others, it is the use of reverb not as a mixing effect but as a compositional instrument. Hansen has stated plainly that “creating chords using reverb is kind of my signature” (Soundtoys). This is worth unpacking carefully, because it represents a fundamentally different relationship with reverb than most producers maintain.

In conventional production, reverb is applied during mixing to create a sense of space and depth. The dry sound is recorded first; the reverb is added later to place the sound in an environment. Hansen inverts this relationship entirely. He applies reverb during the performance and recording stage, treating the reverb tail as part of the musical content. When he plays single notes through heavily reverbed chains, the tails of those notes overlap and interact, creating harmonic structures – chords – that exist only in the reverb. The reverb is not simulating a room. It is generating musical content.

His favorite reverb sources span hardware and software. On the hardware side, he prizes the Ursa Major Space Station SST-282 and the Ursa Major StarGate 626, both vintage digital reverbs known for their dense, complex tail structures. He also uses the Strymon BigSky extensively. In the plug-in domain, he has cited Toraverb, Epicverb, and the reverb built into the Access Virus C series as favorites. For delay with reverb-like qualities, he has called SoundToys EchoBoy “kind of my go-to” (Soundtoys).

His reverb chains are not simple single-unit applications. Hansen has described a process where he “takes a reverb and runs it through a distortion and a filter, puts another reverb on it, then puts maybe another reverb on it before the delay” (MusicTech). This serial stacking of reverbs, with distortion and filtering between them, creates the dense, evolving, harmonically rich reverb tails that are the sonic foundation of nearly every Tycho track.

The Reverb-After-Compression Trick

One of the most documented and widely cited Tycho production techniques is the use of compression after reverb and delay to reshape the dynamic relationship between the dry signal and its spatial tail. The technique has been analyzed extensively by production guides, including Reverb Machine and Attack Magazine.

The principle is straightforward but the effect is profound. In a conventional signal chain, compression comes before reverb. The compressor controls the dynamics of the dry signal, and then reverb is applied to the compressed signal. The reverb tail naturally decays below the level of the dry signal, creating a conventional sense of space.

Hansen reverses this. He places aggressive compression after the reverb in the signal chain. The compressor raises the volume of the reverb tails relative to the dry signal, effectively lengthening the perceived decay time and making the reverb tail a co-equal sonic element alongside the original sound. The typical signal flow looks like: input, compression, heavy EQ, reverb, delay, heavy compression, EQ, output (XLR8R).

The “heavy compression” stage after the reverb is not subtle. Hansen has described using aggressive compressors at this stage – plug-ins like PSP Old Timer and Softtube CL-1B – specifically to “bring out the reverb tails and lengthen the sounds.” He will then follow this compression with a Pultec-style EQ emulation, such as PSP NobleQ, to “give some life to the high end” that the compression may have dulled (XLR8R).

This technique is central to why Tycho’s reverb sounds different from the reverb on most records. It is not atmospheric background. It is structural foreground – as loud and as present as the dry signal, shaped and compressed into a continuous, sustaining wash of harmonic content.

The Subtractive Layering Process

Hansen’s compositional method mirrors his design background. He has drawn explicit parallels between his approach to music and his approach to graphic design: “Design by nature is all about stripped-down ideas and solutions, trying to keep things very efficient and tight. So, for me, I took that idea, and placed these effects layers on top” (Tape Op).

The production process is additive and then subtractive. Hansen begins by building up layers – stacking synth parts, guitar lines, effects textures, rhythmic elements – creating a dense, rich arrangement. Then he strips it down. Working with collaborators like producer Zac Brown, the process involves methodically removing elements: “strip it down, try to figure out what it’s about, take out everything that doesn’t need to be there, and make it cleaner for the final version” (Tape Op).

This subtractive approach explains why Tycho records sound spacious despite being densely produced. The final arrangements have been pruned of redundancy. Every element that remains has earned its place by surviving the stripping-down process. The space in the mix is not empty – it is the negative space left by elements that were removed, and it is filled with the reverb tails and textural artifacts of the elements that remain.

Guitar Processing: The Amp-Less Approach

Hansen’s approach to guitar recording is one of his most distinctive and most thoroughly documented techniques. In a detailed tutorial for XLR8R titled “Artist Tips – Tycho Details How to Get Quality Tones Without the Use of an Amp,” he laid out his complete amp-less guitar signal chain (XLR8R).

The philosophy begins at the front of the chain. Hansen uses Origin Effects pedals – specifically the RevivalDRIVE and BASSRIG – as the front end for all his guitar and bass recording. He has found that these pedals “allow him to achieve the tones he’s looking for much quicker than any amp or digital device” and that they “afford far more sonic breadth than the amps themselves” (Origin Effects). He sets his amp (when he uses one at all) to a clean tone and does all the sculpting in the pedals.

The in-the-box processing chain that follows is methodical and specific:

  1. Front-end compression: An aggressive compressor at the start of the chain to control dynamics. Hansen cites PSP Old Timer and Softtube CL-1B as go-to options.
  2. Aggressive EQ: Light on the way in to maintain flexibility, but used for early tone shaping.
  3. Amp simulation: Amplitube or Guitar Rig 5’s Control Room Pro module, positioned either after effects (for traditional sounds) or before effects (to shape tone feeding into the effects chain).
  4. Reverb and delay: Multiple stages, heavily compressed after application.
  5. Post-reverb compression: Aggressive compression to bring out reverb tails.
  6. Pultec-style EQ: PSP NobleQ to restore high-frequency life.
  7. Precision EQ: PSP Neon for surgical adjustments.
  8. Transparent compression: Slate VBC for final dynamic control.
  9. Console emulation: Waves NLS to emulate a console channel and provide final harmonic drive.

The result of this chain is that Hansen’s guitars often end up “sounding indistinguishable from synths once reverb, compression, and delay are applied to bring sources into the same space” (XLR8R). The Stereo Effects Chain

To the left of his desk sits a guitar and bass station where an extensive collection of pedals and preamps are set up for instant plug-and-play access. The stereo effects rig includes:

The signal flow through this rig is carefully designed. A mono signal enters the chain, and at a specific point – often the Strymon Volante – it is converted to stereo for enhanced width. The Juno-106 Chorus Pad Technique

The Roland Juno-106 is not just one of Hansen’s synths – he owns three of them. The Juno-106 is central to the Tycho pad sound, and the technique for creating those signature pads draws on the instrument’s most celebrated feature: its built-in chorus effect.

The Juno-106 chorus is legendary in synthesis. Its dual-mode BBD (bucket brigade delay) chorus circuit creates a warm, slightly detuned doubling effect that thickens the sound dramatically while adding subtle movement and animation. Hansen exploits this chorus as a foundational texture generator, but the sound does not stop at the output of the synth.

The Juno-106 pad feeds into Hansen’s effects chain, where it receives the same treatment as all Tycho sound sources: heavy reverb, compression after reverb to extend the tails, and EQ shaping. The result is the warm, evolving, harmonically dense pad sound that forms the background of countless Tycho tracks. As Reverb Machine documented in their analysis of the Awake synth sounds, the combination of the Juno’s chorus with aggressive post-reverb compression and surgical EQ is what creates the characteristic Tycho pad: immersive, wide, warm, and never muddy.

The key to avoiding muddiness despite the dense reverb treatment is aggressive EQ. Hansen cuts bass and high-end frequencies while boosting upper-mids, creating a tonal pocket where the pad can occupy its own space without conflicting with bass elements below or vocal/lead elements above.

Tape Saturation via Strymon Deco

Hansen’s ownership of three Strymon Deco units is telling. The Deco emulates the sound of two reel-to-reel tape machines running simultaneously, producing tape saturation, chorusing, flanging, and slapback delay depending on the settings. It adds natural compression, musical harmonic saturation, and warmth – essentially simulating the effect of recording to tape without the maintenance and reliability challenges of actual tape machines.

With three units available, Hansen can apply tape saturation at multiple points in multiple signal chains simultaneously. One Deco might be processing a guitar signal, another a synth line, a third a drum bus. The cumulative effect of multiple layers of tape saturation is exactly the kind of “several levels of effecting” that Hansen describes as creating the warm, textured Tycho character. Each unit adds its own subtle layer of harmonic compression and saturation, building up the density and warmth of the sound without any single stage being aggressive enough to introduce obvious distortion.

The Deco’s doubletracker function also provides stereo width when used on mono sources – a practical benefit for a producer who works extensively with mono analog synthesizers that need to fill a stereo soundstage.

Sidechain Techniques

Hansen uses sidechain compression in a manner consistent with his broader production philosophy: as a tool for creating clarity and movement rather than as an overt pumping effect. The primary application is the classic bass-to-kick sidechain, where a compressor on the bass channel is triggered by the kick drum signal. This ensures that the kick drum’s transient cuts through cleanly on each hit, ducking the bass momentarily to prevent frequency masking in the low end.

In Tycho’s music, this sidechain effect is typically subtle – a gentle ducking rather than the aggressive pumping heard in more explicitly electronic production. The goal is transparency: ensuring that the kick and bass coexist cleanly without the listener being consciously aware that dynamic processing is occurring. This restraint is consistent with Hansen’s broader approach to dynamics, where the goal is always to maintain a natural, organic feel even when employing electronic processing techniques.

How Drums Are Treated: The Blend of Programmed and Live

The evolution of drums in Tycho’s music is one of the clearest indicators of how Hansen’s production approach has matured over time. The early records – Past Is Prologue and portions of Dive – relied heavily on programmed drums: samples triggered from within the DAW, processed through the same effects chains as everything else. When drummer Rory O’Connor joined the project, the relationship between programmed and live drums became a central production question.

Hansen has described how O’Connor’s live drumming “crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront” on later records, with the sound becoming “much more stripped-down and concise with live instruments coming to the forefront” (Tape Op). Working with engineer Count (Mikael Eldridge), the team could “focus on the pulses that Tycho might have previously layered under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.”

The drum treatment in the mature Tycho sound is a carefully calibrated blend. Live drums provide the organic feel, the micro-timing variations, the dynamic responsiveness that programmed drums cannot fully replicate. But those live drums are processed through the same analog-flavored signal chain as everything else: preamps, compression, reverb, EQ. And programmed elements – electronic kick samples, hi-hat patterns, textural percussion – are layered underneath or alongside the live performance to provide consistency and low-end weight.

The result is a drum sound that feels simultaneously human and precise, organic and electronic – a hybrid that serves the larger Tycho aesthetic of blurring the boundaries between analog and digital, natural and synthetic.


Part Three: Mixing

Count (Mikael Eldridge) and the Art of the Mix

The mixing of Tycho’s records has involved a critical collaboration with Count – Mikael Eldridge – a San Francisco-based engineer and producer whose credits span a remarkable range of artists including DJ Shadow, Radiohead, New Order, and Blackalicious. Count has been collaborating with Hansen since the Dive album in 2011, serving as mixer, mastering engineer, production consultant, and recording engineer across multiple albums (Universal Audio Blog).

Count’s contribution to the Tycho sound is significant because he brings an outside perspective to music that Hansen has built in deep isolation. Where Hansen is focused on the texture and feel of individual elements, Count brings the spatial and dynamic perspective of a mixer – understanding how those elements interact with each other and how the overall frequency balance and dynamic range of the record will translate across different playback systems.

For the Weather album, which introduced vocalist Hannah Cottrell (Saint Sinner), Count’s role was particularly important. He was responsible for carving out space for the vocals in a mix that was already dense with the signature Tycho pad textures and guitar layers. Count stressed the challenge directly: “If this is truly vocal music, you can’t hide the vocals!” The solution involved careful frequency management – creating pockets in the mid-range where the vocal could sit without competing with Hansen’s characteristically warm, mid-heavy instrumental textures (Universal Audio Blog).

Hansen has also mixed his own records, particularly in the earlier stages of the project’s development. The shift between self-mixing and working with Count represents an evolution in Hansen’s understanding of the production process – recognizing that the immersion required to build the sounds is a different skill from the objectivity required to balance them.

Analog Summing vs. In-the-Box Mixing

The question of analog summing versus in-the-box mixing has been a central technical decision in Tycho’s production history. For the Epoch album, Count and Hansen made a deliberate choice to move beyond mixing entirely within Pro Tools and adopted the Dangerous Music 2-BUS+ as their analog summing solution (Sound on Sound).

The 2-BUS+ is a 16-channel analog summing mixer that allows stems from the DAW to be routed through multiple channels of high-quality analog circuitry before being summed to a stereo bus. Count described the benefits in terms of “better punch, stereo imagery, and a sense of three-dimensionality” compared to in-the-box summing (Dangerous Music / BBoy Tech Report).

The choice of the Dangerous 2-BUS+ is significant because it is not an aggressive-sounding device. It is known for transparency with subtle analog enhancement – exactly the kind of coloration that aligns with Hansen’s philosophy of building warmth through cumulative stages of gentle processing rather than any single heavy-handed effect.

Count also emphasized the importance of using audiophile-grade digital-to-analog converters – specifically the Dangerous CONVERT-8 DACs – when working with analog summing. The reasoning is that if you are going to route your mix through analog hardware to capture the sonic benefits of analog summing, you need the highest-quality conversion to preserve those benefits on the way out to the analog domain and back in again.

Outboard Mixing Gear

Hansen’s studio mixing setup includes several pieces of outboard hardware that reflect the same philosophy as his recording chain: analog character, musical compression, and warmth.

The key outboard mixing pieces include:

  • SSL G-Series Bus Compressor (G-Comp): The industry-standard stereo bus compressor, used for glue compression on the mix bus. The SSL G-Comp is known for its ability to make a mix feel cohesive and unified without obviously compressing individual elements – exactly the kind of transparent, musical compression that serves Hansen’s dynamic range priorities.

  • Empirical Labs Distressors: One of the most versatile hardware compressors ever made, the Distressor can emulate the character of multiple classic compressor designs. Hansen uses these across various sources, both in the studio and on tour.

  • Teletronix LA-2A: The classic optical leveling amplifier, known for its smooth, program-dependent compression that adds warmth and body while controlling dynamics in a musical way. The LA-2A’s compression character – slow, gentle, warm – is perfectly aligned with Hansen’s sonic priorities.

These pieces serve double duty. They are used during mixing to shape the final sound of the record, and several of them travel with the band for live performances, ensuring that the sonic character of the studio extends to the concert stage.

Master Bus Processing

Hansen’s master bus processing reflects his hybrid analog-digital approach. At the end of the mixing process, he does analog summing through hardware and uses analog bus compression. As he described in his Tape Op interview, he “goes out through that and comes back into the master bus” – routing the mix through analog summing and bus compression hardware, then re-entering the digital domain for the final capture (Tape Op #123).

The master bus is where all of Hansen’s careful gain staging and dynamic range preservation either pays off or falls apart. Because he has maintained dynamics throughout the production process – using level-dependent analog processing rather than brick-wall limiting – the master bus compression can work gently, adding cohesion without crushing the life out of the mix. This is why Tycho records maintain their sense of space and dynamics even at high playback levels: the dynamic range was preserved at every stage, so the final stage does not need to compensate for dynamics that were lost earlier in the chain.

Within REAPER, the master channel hosts additional plug-in processing – likely final EQ adjustments, limiting for level management, and potentially additional reverb or spatial processing for the overall mix. But the heavy lifting of dynamic control and harmonic coloration has already been done in the analog domain.


Part Four: The Live Sound

Peter Franco: From Daft Punk to Tycho

The live Tycho experience is shaped significantly by the presence of Peter Franco as the front-of-house (FOH) engineer. Franco’s credentials are extraordinary. He is one of the Grammy-winning engineers behind Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, having first worked with the French duo during their landmark 2006-2007 live tour. He received a Best Electronic Album Grammy Award for his engineering work on the resulting live album, Alive 2007. For Random Access Memories, Franco won a Grammy along with Mick Guzauski, Florian Lagatta, Daniel Lerner, and Bob Ludwig for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical (Wikipedia).

Franco’s presence at Tycho’s FOH position is not a coincidence. It reflects Hansen’s commitment to treating the live sound with the same seriousness and analog-first philosophy that governs the studio recordings. Franco brings a level of engineering expertise and a familiarity with premium analog hardware that allows the live Tycho sound to approach the sonic quality of the studio records – a rare achievement in live music.

The Analog Outboard Philosophy Applied to Live Sound

What makes Tycho’s live sound setup truly unusual is the amount of studio-grade outboard gear that travels with the band. Most touring acts rely entirely on digital processing at front of house – plug-ins running on digital consoles, with perhaps a single outboard compressor on the vocal channel. Tycho’s approach is radically different.

As documented by Reverb.com in their comprehensive feature on Tycho’s touring rig, the FOH setup includes:

  • Empirical Labs Distressors: The same hardware compressors used in the studio, applied to key channels in the live mix for their characteristic warm, musical compression.

  • Teletronix LA-2A: The classic optical leveling amplifier, providing smooth dynamic control on critical sources – likely vocals and lead synths – with the same warm compression character heard on the records.

  • Avalon VT-737s: A pair of these tube channel strips, which combine a Class A tube preamp, an opto-compressor, a sweepable EQ, and an output level control in a single unit. The VT-737 is known for its rich, warm, tube-saturated sound – essentially bringing the studio preamp sound to the live stage.

The live rig also includes outboard from BAE Audio, SSL, Meris, and Chameleon Labs, creating a comprehensive analog processing environment at front of house that mirrors the layered, warm processing approach of the studio.

This outboard-heavy approach to live sound means that the audience at a Tycho concert is hearing music processed through the same caliber of analog hardware as the music on the records. The Distressors provide the same dynamic character. The LA-2A provides the same optical compression warmth. The Avalon preamps provide the same tube saturation. The result is a live sound that feels continuous with the recorded sound – not a digital approximation of it, but a parallel analog realization of the same sonic philosophy.

The Live Rig as Instrument

Hansen himself has spoken about this philosophy in the context of Universal Audio’s Apollo and UAD-2 Live Rack system, which the band also uses on stage. He described the live rig as feeling “like an instrument, rather than just a ‘tool’” (Universal Audio Blog). This language echoes his broader production philosophy of “playing the gear like an instrument” – treating the processing chain as a creative, musical element rather than a technical necessity.

The touring rig extends beyond the FOH position. Hansen’s on-stage setup includes RME UCX interfaces connected to computers running REAPER – the same DAW he uses in the studio – allowing him to run live sessions with the same plug-in processing and routing he uses during recording. Key synths from the studio, including the Korg Mono/Poly and Moog Minimoog Model D, have been sampled into Kontakt patches for live use, preserving the sonic character of the original instruments without the fragility and weight of touring with vintage hardware.


The Unified Philosophy

Hansen has described his approach as seeking to add “a patina or a texture” – comparing it to his design work where he creates something digitally perfect and then adds analog warmth to make it feel like “an old, weathered photograph” (MusicTech).
