Scott Hansen has built the Tycho project on the conviction that the instruments you choose determine the music you are capable of making — not just technically, but emotionally. The synthesizers and hardware that have passed through his studios in Sacramento, San Francisco, and Oakland are not merely tools for executing musical ideas. They are, in his framing, the conditions under which certain musical ideas become possible at all. A particular Moog filter at a particular setting opens a particular emotional territory. A certain vintage polysynth, unstable in temperature and unpredictable in tuning, leads down paths that a more controlled instrument would never suggest. Over twenty-five years of continuous work, Hansen has assembled, reconfigured, and in one dramatic instance largely dismantled and rebuilt his collection based on what the music required — and what the music had outgrown.

The Conceptual Foundation: Imperfection as Aesthetic Intent
Before the gear, there is the idea. The philosophical premise that animates every equipment decision Hansen has made is rooted in one central conviction: that sounds produced by physical electrical circuits behaving imperfectly carry an emotional charge that mathematically generated digital audio does not. This is not nostalgia dressed up as engineering. It is a specific claim about how listeners receive sound, and about what triggers the physiological responses — the warmth, the sense of memory being accessed, the feeling of reaching toward something just out of grasp — that Hansen identifies as the emotional targets of his work.
The most direct influence on this conviction is the Scottish electronic duo Boards of Canada, who Hansen has described as representing the absolute high-water mark for that kind of emotionally potent electronic music. Boards of Canada built their aesthetic on tape degradation, oscillator drift, and the physical quirks of aging analog equipment — and those physical artifacts were not incidental to the music’s effect but central to it. A pitch that wavers slightly, a resonance that blooms in unexpected ways at certain frequencies, a decay that does not behave with digital precision — these are the qualities that tell the ear something alive is happening. They evoke the sonic character of old recordings, which the human brain has come to associate with authentic, unmediated experience.
Hansen arrived at this understanding through his parallel career as a graphic designer. Working under the name ISO50, he produces visual work built around weathered textures, aged photographic surfaces, faded color palettes, and the accumulated evidence of time and use. His design vocabulary is essentially a collection of controlled imperfections. When he began to think seriously about what Tycho’s music should feel like, he reached for the same conceptual toolkit. Frequency spectrums became color palettes. Transients were shapes with edges to be managed. The analog gear in his studio played the role of the grain overlays and noise layers in his visual work: applied not to simulate failure but to simulate time.
The practical consequence of this philosophy is that Hansen has always been willing to use imperfect hardware in preference to clean software, and to use processing specifically for the artifacts it introduces rather than the accuracy it provides. The question he is always asking is not “does this sound technically correct?” but “does this sound feel true?” Those are very different questions, and they lead to very different equipment decisions.
The Digital Genesis: Cakewalk, Software, and the Early Period (2002–2006)
The earliest Tycho recordings — released as The Science of Patterns in 2002 and later compiled and expanded as Past Is Prologue in 2006 — were made with surprisingly minimal hardware. Hansen was working in Sacramento and later San Francisco, operating on a PC-based setup centered on Cakewalk SONAR and relying heavily on software synthesis and digital processing.
The significant piece of hardware in this era was the Ensoniq ASR-X Pro, a sampler and drum machine hybrid that Hansen acquired as one of his first real pieces of production gear. The ASR-X Pro gave him the ability to record sounds directly into the machine, manipulate them through its internal effects, sample the results, and sequence everything into a composition. Its sixteen-bit converters introduced a specific graininess to any audio passing through them — a limitation that turned out to be an aesthetic asset. The hazy, slightly degraded quality of those early Tycho recordings owes something to the ASR-X Pro’s refusal to be perfectly transparent.
Alongside the sampler, Hansen’s primary synthesis tool was the Access Virus C, a virtual analog synthesizer famous for its deep modulation architecture and its internal reverb algorithms. Hansen’s use of the Virus was unconventional: rather than deploying it as the trance instrument it was commonly used as, he exploited its dark, smooth reverb character and its ability to produce slow, textured pads that occupied the low-mid frequency range without becoming dense or muddy. The Virus C provided both the arpeggiated melodic lines and the atmospheric depth that anchored tracks like “Past Is Prologue.” Hansen later noted that the Virus C’s internal conversion and output stage had a warmth and smoothness that more technically advanced instruments often lacked — a specific quality of the analog circuit path that he valued over any paper specification.
For melodic leads, Hansen relied on Arturia’s CS-80V, a software emulation of the Yamaha CS-80 — one of the most expressively rich polyphonic synthesizers ever built, used famously by Vangelis on the Blade Runner soundtrack. The CS-80V gave Hansen access to the sweeping, velocity-sensitive character of the original without the physical impossibility of owning and maintaining one of the rarest and most temperamental synthesizers in existence. Percussion came from a Roland TR-505, a digital drum machine that Hansen used for supplementary rhythmic textures rather than primary groove construction.
This software-heavy period ended not because Hansen ran out of things to do with it but because he encountered analog hardware and understood immediately what he had been missing. The Korg Mono/Poly was the instrument that changed his conception of synthesis at a fundamental level. When Hansen got his hands on the Mono/Poly — a four-oscillator analog synthesizer released by Korg in the early 1980s that could operate in monophonic or polyphonic modes — he understood for the first time what experienced synthesizer players meant when they talked about analog warmth. The gap between the Triton’s digital patches and the Mono/Poly’s living, oscillating waveforms was not a matter of degree. It was a different category of sound. From that point, the trajectory of Tycho’s hardware acquisition was set.
The Dive Watershed: First Analog Hardware and the REAPER Migration (2007–2011)
The development of Dive (2011) unfolded over nearly five years and represented a fundamental reinvention of how Hansen approached production. He was building his analog collection for the first time, learning what each instrument could contribute, and simultaneously rebuilding his software environment around Cockos REAPER — a DAW that, unlike Cakewalk SONAR, could function as what Hansen called a “meta-environment” that organized an increasingly complex collection of hardware.
The Korg Trident arrived early in this period, and it arrived because of Boards of Canada. Hansen has been direct about this provenance: he acquired the Trident after learning that his defining musical influence had reportedly used one. The Trident is a peculiar instrument — a 1980 hybrid that combines separate synthesis sections for strings, brass, and polyphonic synthesis. Its wobbly vibrato and slightly unstable character gave it a quality that felt genuinely lived-in, like an old photograph losing its edges. For the cinematic, oceanic texture of tracks like the title piece “Dive,” the Trident provided lush orchestral backdrop that no contemporary polysynth could quite replicate. When it eventually appeared in the 2023 Reverb sale, the listing noted veneer damage, missing screws, and a scratchy output jack — the physical record of sustained use.
The Korg MS-20 joined the studio during this period, though Hansen used it cautiously at first. The MS-20’s semi-modular patchbay and aggressive dual-filter character make it a very different animal from the warm, enveloping sounds that Hansen typically gravitates toward. In a revealing admission, Hansen acknowledged that the iconic lead sound of the title track “Dive” was tracked using the MS-20 plugin rather than the hardware version, despite having the real instrument sitting across the room. The plugin had a different sound — a specific quality that served that particular composition better than the hardware would have. This is one of the first documented instances of a pattern that would define Hansen’s relationship with software throughout his career: the right sound is whatever serves the music, regardless of its origin.
Two other instruments from this period shaped the Dive sound significantly. The Korg Polysix contributed its distinctive chorus-laden pad textures — notably, the “Awake 2nd lead” (though documented in a later album) was also tracked using the Polysix legacy plugin rather than the hardware, further establishing Hansen’s DAW-and-hardware hybrid approach. The Korg Mono/Poly, already in the collection, became the dominant melodic voice of Dive. Its four oscillators could be stacked for massive monophonic leads or spread into a rough four-note chord, and its filter had a character that rewarded the kind of physical, expressive engagement Hansen had been seeking.
The most significant hardware arrival of the Dive era, however, was the Oberheim Four Voice FVS-1 — a massive, unpredictable synthesizer built by Tom Oberheim in the mid-1970s as one of the earliest polyphonic instruments. The Four Voice is constructed from four individual Synthesizer Expander Modules, each with its own oscillators, filter, and envelope generators, each with its own character and tuning drift. Unlike modern polysynths where every voice is engineered to be identical, the Four Voice is constitutionally incapable of perfect uniformity. Hansen described it in terms that bordered on the reverential: a “magic synth” with “a mind of its own,” an instrument that would “lead you down these paths you never knew you wanted to go down.” The thick, wooly, unpredictable sound of the Oberheim became one of the defining textures of both Dive and the subsequent Awake era. It was the most expensive single item in the 2023 Reverb sale, listed at approximately thirty thousand dollars.
Outboard processing also took on a new seriousness during the Dive sessions. The Universal Audio 6176 Vintage Channel Strip — a combination of the UA 610 tube preamp and the 1176 FET compressor — became the primary front-end for analog recordings. By passing signals through the 6176’s vacuum tube circuitry before they reached the digital converters, Hansen was able to impart harmonic distortion and physical weight before a single sample was written to disk. The Roland RE-201 Space Echo, used not primarily for echo but for its transformer-based preamps and tape saturation character, added a layer of vintage warmth to dry signals. The RME Fireface 800 served as the audio interface, providing reliable analog-to-digital conversion for integrating an increasingly complex hardware setup.
The Minimoog at the Center (2007–Present)
While the Minimoog Model D was not necessarily Hansen’s first significant analog synthesizer acquisition, it quickly became the most important — and it holds that position to this day. His instrument is an all-original 1972 unit, one of the earliest production Minimoogs, and it has appeared on more Tycho recordings than any other single piece of hardware.
Hansen’s description of the Minimoog reveals everything about why it occupies this position. He has called it “the closest thing I’ve ever found to a guitar in a synthesizer” — and in Tycho’s world, that is the highest compliment an instrument can receive. The guitar’s value lies in its physical responsiveness: the way a player’s touch determines not just the pitch but the timbre, the attack, the micro-variations in sustain and decay that make every note feel contingent and alive. The Minimoog achieves something similar through the physical relationships between its controls and its circuits. When Hansen turns the filter cutoff knob on the 1972 unit, the resulting change in character has a physical quality — a nonlinearity in how the filter opens, a bloom in the resonance — that makes the sound feel responsive rather than executed.
The 1972 unit specifically has what Hansen calls a “looseness” — subtle tuning instabilities and oscillator drift that more modern instruments, including Moog’s own reissues, do not replicate. This is not a defect he tolerates for the sake of vintage authenticity. The looseness is functionally important. It is what makes layered Minimoog parts feel like a living harmonic structure rather than a perfect chord. Hansen’s primary compositional technique with the Minimoog involves building chords from stacked single-note takes: “I’m always creating chords out of mono synths, like the Minimoog. I’ll play a note and then layer it and layer it.” Each layer carries the instrument’s natural drift, and the resulting stack has a chorus quality that is fundamentally different from what a polyphonic synth produces — more organic, more varied, more spacious.
For studio work, the Minimoog is typically recorded through the Universal Audio 6176 to add tube compression and saturation before the signal enters REAPER. The 6176’s tube circuitry and 1176 compressor work together to round the attack slightly and add harmonic richness in the low-midrange — the frequency range where the Minimoog’s warmth is most concentrated. This combination is arguably the core sonic signature of Tycho’s lead melodies across the entire catalog.
For touring, Hansen initially relied on Native Instruments’ Monark plugin — calling it “really close to the real thing” and noting it was “almost indiscernible from a real Mini for some sounds” — before Moog released its reissue Model D, which he immediately acquired for the road. He has since acknowledged that for studio work, he finds himself reaching for Universal Audio’s Minimoog emulation more than the hardware unit itself, for the practical benefits of recall and workflow integration. But the original is permanent. Hansen has said, without apparent irony, “No, absolutely not. I don’t care if I never use it again. It’s too sentimental.” The 1972 Minimoog was not listed in the 2023 Reverb sale. It is the one instrument that will not leave.
The Awake Era: Band Integration and Studio Professionalization (2012–2014)
The expansion of Tycho from a solo project into a full live band — with Zac Brown on guitar and bass and Rory O’Connor on drums — required a fundamental rethinking of how Hansen approached sound design. The music had to be playable and physically performable, not just producible in a DAW. Instruments needed to respond to the band’s playing in real time. The sonic palette that had emerged from Dive — oceanic, heavily textured, slow to evolve — needed a more muscular, dynamically responsive version for live performance. This period produced some of the deepest investments in hardware infrastructure.
The Ursa Major Space Station SST-282 arrived as a signature spatial processor. A 1970s digital reverb and delay unit, the Space Station has an unusually grainy, metallic character — its early digital conversion hardware introduces artifacts that more modern reverbs are specifically designed to eliminate but that Hansen values for exactly the quality they create. Running the raw sawtooth waves of the Minimoog through the Space Station transforms them into vast, modulated spaces with a texture that feels both ancient and synthetic. The Space Station appeared throughout the Awake and Epoch sessions and became one of the most recognizable components of the Tycho spatial aesthetic. It was ultimately sold in the 2023 Reverb sale along with the majority of the vintage hardware, listed for around nine hundred dollars.
The Empirical Labs Distressor joined the studio during the Awake period as a primary dynamic tool. Hansen used the Distressor not merely for volume control but as a “tape-saturation emulator,” engaging its British Mode or the aggressive Nuke setting on drum overheads to achieve a percussive sound that was simultaneously hard-hitting and warm. The API 3124+ preamp provided the punchy front-end for drums and guitars, while the RME Fireface UFX — an upgrade from the Fireface 800 — handled high-fidelity capture of the increasingly complex studio chain.
The Eventide H3000 D/SE Ultra Harmonizer was an important addition as a pitch-shifting and widening tool. Hansen used the H3000 for micro-pitch effects that spread lead sounds and synths into a wider stereo field without the comb filtering artifacts that chorus circuits can introduce. Its ability to create pitch-shifted delays — where each echo repeat sits slightly detuned from the original — added a dimension to Tycho’s spatial processing that pure reverb could not achieve.
Epoch and the Analog Commitment (2015–2016)
Epoch (2016) marks the most hardware-intensive period of Tycho’s career in terms of conscious philosophy. Hansen made a deliberate decision to move away from what he called “the endless options of the computer” and commit to the specific characters of individual instruments. The album’s identity is inseparable from two synthesizers in particular: the Korg Minilogue and the Sequential Prophet-6.
The Korg Minilogue is an entry-level four-voice analog polysynth released in 2016, and its prominence on Epoch surprised many observers who expected Hansen’s growing studio to trend toward rarer and more expensive hardware. But the Minilogue’s appeal was precisely its immediacy: its simple, direct interface and its four-voice architecture forced Hansen to write simpler, more effective melodic structures. He has publicly credited the Minilogue for the sound of nearly every track on Epoch — not as hyperbole but as accurate production documentation. The instrument’s raw, percussive analog character brought a directness to the record that counterbalanced the elaborate spatial processing applied afterward.
A specific technical insight from the Epoch sessions reveals how Hansen bridges hardware and software in his hybrid workflow: the Minilogue’s envelopes produce a subtle clicking sound at certain settings. Rather than returning to the hardware to address the issue mechanically — or simply accepting the artifact — Hansen used the Sonnox Envolution plugin in REAPER to smooth the envelope behavior in the digital domain. This episode illustrates a consistent philosophy: hardware generates the inspiration and the character, and software addresses the practical problems that hardware introduces. Neither domain is entirely sufficient without the other.
The Sequential Prophet-6 provided the record’s polyphonic foundation — the warm, “bread and butter” analog chord textures that the Minilogue’s four voices could not achieve with the same authority. Hansen chose the Prophet-6 over the Oberheim OB-6 after deliberate comparison. The distinction he identified is technically precise: the OB-6 (designed by Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim) uses a twelve-decibel filter that produces a wilder, fuzzier, more character-heavy sound. The Prophet-6’s twenty-four-decibel resonant low-pass filter provides smoother, more controlled filtering — what Hansen called “classy” — giving it the ability to sit in a dense mix without asserting too much of its own personality. For a record built around texture and layering, the Prophet-6’s transparency was a virtue, not a compromise.
The Epoch era also introduced the Kemper Profiling Amplifier as a guitar and bass tracking solution. By profiling physical amplifiers and storing the profiles digitally, Hansen achieved the tonal character of specific tube amplifiers without the physical complexity of microphone placement and room acoustics. The Strymon Timeline replaced the Space Echo for digital delay duties in certain contexts, providing precision rhythmic echo against the more organic and wobbly character of the vintage hardware. The Moog Sub Phatty contributed gritty basslines and distorted leads as a complement to the Minimoog’s warmer character.
The sequential acquisition of a Prophet-5 Rev 3 also shaped this period significantly. Hansen described the Prophet-5 as an “indispensable newcomer” and engaged with it in a way that reveals his understanding of how synthesizers occupy frequency space: “You can’t just have layers of Prophet-5 — that’s just going to be a disaster.” The Prophet-5’s warm, woody character is so sonically dominant that only one instance of it can occupy a mix at a time. This kind of specific spatial awareness — thinking of each synthesizer as a distinct tonal mass that must be positioned carefully in the frequency spectrum — is characteristic of Hansen’s approach to building arrangements.
The Roland Juno: Pervasive Presence, Understated Role
The Roland Juno series occupies a peculiar place in the Tycho sonic architecture: it is probably the most pervasive presence across the entire catalog, yet it is rarely the sound that calls attention to itself. It is the atmosphere — the harmonic context in which leads, basslines, and rhythmic elements unfold.
The Juno-106, Roland’s 1984 six-voice polysynth, generates its signature sound through the combination of its IR3109 resonant low-pass filter and its built-in BBD (bucket brigade delay) chorus circuit. The chorus is the decisive factor. Roland’s engineers calibrated the chorus depth and modulation rate to a setting that creates three-dimensional width and shimmer without destabilizing pitch — a technically demanding balance, and one they achieved through the specific physical behavior of the MN3009 and MN3101 chips, whose noise floor and non-linear characteristics are as important to the sound as the signal they are processing. Hansen has noted that the Juno-106’s 80017a filter chips provide a “sweeter” and “cleaner” output than the Juno-60’s faster-envelope IR3109 configuration — a distinction that is real and that Hansen can hear in context.
The Juno-106’s signature presence runs through “A Walk” from Dive, the pad layers throughout Awake, the textural foundations of Epoch and Weather, and most explicitly through the title track of Infinite Health (2024). On Infinite Health, Hansen relied primarily on the Softube Model 84 — a software emulation of the Juno-106 that he called “one of the best soft synths ever made” — crediting it directly with sparking the idea for the title track. This is a striking statement about the state of software emulation: when a plugin not only serves a production but originates a compositional concept, the distinction between hardware and software has become largely meaningless in practice. MusicTech awarded the Model 84 a perfect ten out of ten, describing it as “almost a perfect facsimile” of the original. The Juno’s influence on Tycho’s harmonic palette thus operates simultaneously through both the physical hardware and its best digital approximation.
The Juno-60 also appears in Hansen’s documented collection, and the two instruments are not interchangeable despite their family resemblance. Where the Juno-106 tends toward sweetness and smoothness, the Juno-60’s character is slightly more complex and variable, favored by collectors who want a more “vintage” feel. Hansen’s preference for the 106 in dense mixes reflects an arrangement philosophy: when many sounds are competing for space, the instrument that sits most cleanly without asserting its own character is often more valuable than the instrument with more distinctive personality.
Weather and the Vocal Expansion (2018–2019)
The introduction of vocals on Weather (2019) — performed by Hannah Cottrell, working under the name Saint Sinner — required a structural reorganization of the sonic palette. The mid-frequency range that had previously been filled with dense synthesizer pads now had to accommodate a human voice, and a human voice is the most demanding mix element that exists: the human ear is calibrated to identify and focus on vocal sound with extraordinary precision, and any synthesizer content competing with it will either win the battle and bury the voice or be overwhelmed and lose its own presence in the process.
Hansen addressed this challenge primarily by moving to the Moog Subsequent 37 — the revised iteration of the Sub 37 — as his primary monophonic synthesizer. The Subsequent 37’s character is more modern than the Minimoog’s: its multidrive circuit allows for controlled harmonic distortion that gives it edge and cut, and its paraphonic mode — which allows two independent notes to play simultaneously through a shared filter — opened harmonic possibilities that a pure monosynth cannot achieve. Hansen used the Subsequent 37 for moving, rhythmic basslines that anchored the vocal tracks by providing low-frequency support and harmonic context without occupying the midrange frequencies where Cottrell’s voice needed to live uncontested.
The monitoring setup was also upgraded substantially for Weather to ensure that the precise frequency balance required by vocal production would translate accurately. Hansen moved to a Genelec 8341A monitoring system paired with a 7360A subwoofer, using Genelec’s GLM calibration software to tune the system to his Oakland studio’s specific acoustic properties. Point-source monitoring — in which the low frequencies and high frequencies originate from the same physical point in space — was critical for evaluating how vocal and synthesizer content interacted through the full frequency spectrum.
The broader Tycho sound during this period also accommodated the Access Virus TI2 Darkstar in a new role. Rather than using it primarily as a sound generator, Hansen deployed it as a MIDI controller for his VST collection — exploiting the hardware’s keyboard and control surface while routing the actual synthesis duties to software. This kind of flexible function-swapping, in which hardware does not necessarily do the thing it was designed to do, is characteristic of Hansen’s pragmatic approach to the studio.
Mixing engineer Count Eldridge’s role became more technically demanding on Weather than on any previous Tycho record. Where earlier albums had required Eldridge to control the density of pure synthesizer arrangements, Weather required surgical subtractive EQ work to carve specific frequency pockets for the vocals. The two engineers’ shared use of REAPER facilitated an unusually fluid collaboration: Hansen could bring his session to Eldridge’s studio, incorporate the mix engineer’s parametric adjustments, and return to his own space with those parameters embedded in the project, allowing him to continue developing arrangements with a professional mix perspective already in place.
Simulcast (2020), released as the instrumental companion to Weather, functioned as the record that served the demand for Tycho’s purely synthesizer-driven sound. Without vocals requiring frequency accommodation, the synthesizer palette could expand back to its natural density. Together, the two records effectively document the Tycho sound in two complementary states: vocal-accommodating and synthesizer-first.
The Peak Collection: Pre-Sale Hardware Inventory
By 2022, the Tycho studio contained what may have been the most extensive collection of significant synthesizers Hansen had ever assembled. The Minimoog Model D (1972 original) was anchored at the center, flanked by vintage Neve modules. The Oberheim Four Voice FVS-1 occupied a prominent position as the most expensive and temperamental instrument in the room. The Prophet-5 Rev 3 and Prophet-6 were both in active use, filling the Sequential register of warm polyphonic sound. The Korg Mono/Poly, Polysix, and Trident represented the Japanese vintage analog tradition. The Moog Voyager provided a modern version of the Moog architecture with MIDI and patch storage. The Moog Matriarch, Prodigy, and Sub 37/Subsequent 37 formed a Moog family capable of covering virtually every mono and paraphonic application. The Roland SH-101 provided simple, direct bassline and lead capability. The Korg MS-20 brought semi-modular complexity when unexpected textures were needed.
For spatial and character processing, the collection was equally extensive. The Strymon Deco, which Hansen maintained in three separate units, provided tape saturation and “wobble” as the first processor in many signal chains — the machine that made clean digital and analog signals feel like they had passed through magnetic tape. The Strymon BigSky handled massive algorithmic reverbs. The Timeline provided precision rhythmic delay. The Chase Bliss Tonal Recall offered analog delay with pitch vibrato capabilities. The Ursa Major Space Station SST-282 contributed its grainy, metallic reverb tails. The Eventide H3000 D/SE Ultra Harmonizer handled pitch-shifting and micro-pitch widening. The Roland SDE-1000 digital delay remained for specific textural applications.
Software was equally important. Despite the physical scale of the hardware collection, Hansen has estimated that approximately 75% of the final sounds on any given Tycho production are software-based. The Soundtoys suite — particularly EchoBoy as his go-to echo processor on every record, and Decapitator for saturation — was essential. Native Instruments Monark provided a Minimoog Model D emulation close enough to use on stage. The Arturia V-Collection offered emulations of the Jupiter-8 and Prophet-V that Hansen deployed when the hardware originals were either unavailable or impractical. Valhalla DSP’s ValhallaRoom provided high-quality algorithmic reverb. The Oberheim Four Voice FVS-1 went for approximately thirty thousand dollars — the most expensive item, and the most emotionally significant. The Prophet-5 Rev 3 went, described as being in “remarkably clean condition.” The Korg Trident, the Korg Polysix (which did not power on and required repair), the Korg Mono/Poly, the Moog Voyager, and the Ursa Major Space Station SST-282 all went. The Roland SH-101 went. Vintage effects processors and outboard gear went alongside the synthesizers.
The instruments Hansen retained are as revealing as those he sold. The 1972 Minimoog Model D stayed — permanently, unconditionally. The Moog Matriarch stayed, along with the Moog Prodigy. The Oberheim OB-X8 — a recent acquisition that Hansen had described as a “modern classic” — stayed as the primary polyphonic synthesizer going forward. The Strymon Deco units stayed. The core of the remaining studio was characterized by instruments that were either physically irreplaceable (the Minimoog), practically superior to their predecessors (the OB-X8 over the Four Voice FVS-1), or essential to the effects chain that gives the music its character (the Deco).
The sale was not a crisis. It was a considered curatorial decision, the kind of periodic studio recalibration that happens when a producer looks at an accumulated collection and realizes that owning an instrument is not the same as it being useful. The Four Voice FVS-1 was magic — Hansen’s word — but it was also physically demanding, temperamental, and difficult to integrate into a modern hybrid workflow. The Oberheim OB-X8, which combines the circuits of the OB-X, OB-Xa, and OB-8 into a single synthesizer, provides polyphonic pad capability of similar depth and authenticity in a format that is far more stable and practical. Released by Sequential in 2022 after the reacquisition of the Oberheim brand by Dave Smith’s company, the OB-X8 is a deliberate attempt to reconstruct the entire lineage of early Oberheim polyphonic synthesizers — the OB-X from 1979, the OB-Xa, and the OB-8 — in a single modern instrument. Each mode gives the player access to different filter character, different voice architectures, and different stylistic ranges.
For Hansen, the OB-X8 provides the wide, brassy polyphonic pads that are prominent throughout Infinite Health (2024). These are the sounds — dense, harmonically complex, slightly unpredictable in the way that different voice modes interact — that place the album in a different sonic territory from the Epoch and Awake material. Where the Prophet-6 had been clean and controlled, the OB-X8 introduces more variation between voices, more character in the filter behavior, and a wider, more assertive sound that sits differently in a mix.
The Moog Matriarch remained as the center of the stereo effects station. Its four-voice paraphonic capability and built-in stereo analog delay allow for the creation of organic, evolving soundscapes that bridge the gap between strict synthesis and more atmospheric, processual sound design. The Matriarch’s semi-modular patchbay opens its architecture in ways the Minimoog’s sealed signal path never could, and Hansen has been explicit that this expandability — the ability to reroute signals, create feedback loops, and explore unexpected behaviors — connects to his broader interest in harnessing sonic artifacts and treating unexpected results as compositional material.
The Moog Prodigy occupies the “Bass Zone” alongside a Fender Precision Bass in the post-sale studio — an arrangement that speaks to how Hansen thinks about these two instruments. The Prodigy is the synthesized equivalent of the P-Bass: raw, percussive, immediate, with a gritty monophonic character that anchors a track’s low end without the warmth and depth of the Minimoog. Three Strymon Deco units remain in the post-sale studio, maintained as separate processors for different points in the signal chain. The Deco does one specific thing with unusual sophistication: it makes any signal passing through it feel like it was recorded to magnetic tape. The Arturia V-Collection’s Jupiter-8 and Prophet-V emulations have appeared in documented Tycho productions, filling instrumental roles that the hardware originals would have provided in a previous era.
The Soundtoys suite, particularly EchoBoy, has been described by Hansen as his go-to echo processor on every record — a consistency that spans from the early software-heavy period through the peak hardware years. EchoBoy’s ability to model the behavior of specific tape and bucket-brigade delays, and to add the same kind of “dark, wobbly” quality that physical tape machines introduce, makes it the software equivalent of the Roland Space Echo: not a simulation of the hardware, but a flexible tool that achieves similar sonic effects with greater precision and recall. Decapitator, another Soundtoys plugin, provides aggressive saturation that can add “crunch” to any signal — the digital equivalent of the Analog Heat hardware processor.
The Valhalla DSP suite — particularly ValhallaRoom and VintageVerb — handles algorithmic reverb in contexts where the specific timbral character of a hardware reverb is not the goal. Everything else — the Oberheim Four Voice, the Prophet-5, the Korg Trident, the Mono/Poly, the Voyager — served their purpose in their time. The music they made exists and will continue to be heard. The instruments themselves passed to other hands. The studio that remains is not smaller than the studio that preceded it. It is more precisely calibrated to what it is actually trying to do.

The Universal Audio 6176 provides tube compression and warmth at the input stage. These are not corrections or enhancements applied after a sound has been captured.
