The preamp adds transformer saturation, which generates even-order harmonics that the ear associates with vintage recording equipment and musical richness. The Distressor adds further compression and potential saturation, shaping the envelope and giving the sound its sustain and decay character. Mid-side (MS) processing is a technique that separates a stereo signal into its “mid” component (the sum of left and right, effectively the center of the stereo image) and its “side” component (the difference between left and right, effectively what sits at the edges of the stereo field). Awake was the first Tycho record built from the start as a band record. O’Connor and Brown were in the room from the earliest sessions, and the recordings reflect this — the drums in particular have an immediacy and physical presence that the programmed drums of Dive approached but could not fully achieve. The guitar work is more prominent in the mix, and the arrangements have more space, reflecting the band’s instinct for leaving room for each other rather than filling every frequency with synthesizer texture.

Sonically, Awake is brighter than Dive — the high end is more present, the mix has more air in it. The apparent ease is the result of enormous effort directed at removing the evidence of effort.

“The reverb is just a plugin applied to everything.” Tycho’s reverb is a compositional element, not a processor applied uniformly at mixdown.
