There is a photograph from 1999 that functions as the creation myth of Tycho. On a folding table in a Sacramento bedroom sit an Ensoniq ASR-X Pro sampler, a Roland JP-8000 synthesizer, an E-MU Orbit sound module, a Yamaha stereo EQ, a Gemini four-channel DJ mixer, and a Sony MiniDisc recorder. On the wall hangs a tapestry depicting a waterfall made of rainbows, rescued from a dumpster. Scott Hansen would later note that the “color scheme and subject matter informed a lot of my earlier work.” That was Studio 1.0 in Hansen’s own taxonomy. The entire recording chain could hold roughly six minutes of audio before memory was exhausted. Everything went to MiniDisc.

In August 2023, Reverb visited Hansen’s Oakland home studio and found walls lined with synthesizers, racks of outboard processing, calibrated Genelec monitors, and professionally designed acoustic treatment. A gear inventory had been valued at over $160,000 when portions of it went up for sale the following month. The distance between those two rooms is not merely the distance between poverty and success, or between beginner and expert. It is a twenty-five-year record of an artist learning — in the most literal and mechanical sense — how rooms shape sound, and how sound shapes rooms.

This article traces that journey in full: every documented studio space Tycho has occupied, the equipment that populated each room, the transitions that forced changes in working method, and the underlying philosophy that has governed every decision about space, gear, and acoustic environment from the Sacramento bedroom to the Oakland facility where Tycho’s seventh album was made.


Studio 1.0: The Sacramento Bedroom (1999–2002)

Before there was a studio, there was a dresser. Hansen’s introduction to music-making was a Roland MC-303 Groovebox acquired through a trade — an Alesis drum machine and matching sequencer exchanged at a local Sacramento music store for the Roland unit. The MC-303 was never a sophisticated instrument, but for someone who had become fascinated with electronic music through artists like Photek, Roni Size, and DJ Shadow, it was a revelation. The abstract idea of making music became tangible.

The upgrade to Studio 1.0 came in mid-1999. The centerpiece was the Ensoniq ASR-X Pro, a combination drum machine and synthesizer that used drum pads rather than keys and incorporated a sampler capable of handling multi-timbral sequences. The ASR-X Pro was Hansen’s primary compositional tool because it introduced the concept that would become foundational to everything that followed: resampling. He could record audio outputs back into the machine itself, chop and manipulate the results, and sequence them into compositions of increasing complexity. The six-minute sample memory limit was a binding constraint, but it imposed a discipline — every element had to earn its place because space was finite. “That was the first thing that made me think, ‘Okay, this is something I can do. I can make musical compositions instead of just play with this gear,’” he told Tape Op.

The Roland JP-8000 provided synthesis. The E-MU Orbit filled in electronic percussion textures. The Gemini four-channel DJ mixer served as the summing device. Final mixes were transferred to the Sony MiniDisc recorder, a process that added its own layer of warmth through the MD format’s ATRAC encoding.

There were no monitors. Everything happened on headphones, an arrangement forced by the practical realities of a shared living space. Monitoring exclusively on headphones during those early years shaped Hansen’s approach to sound in ways that outlasted the Sacramento bedroom by decades. Working from the inside out — conceiving music for an intimate, enclosed listening experience — influenced how he layered sounds, balanced frequencies, and constructed space within compositions. That quality never left the music, even as the studios grew and the monitoring equipment became more sophisticated. The relationship between Tycho’s sound and headphone listening begins not as an aesthetic preference but as a material constraint.

In 2001, a serious accident hospitalized Hansen and left him confined at home during recovery. During six weeks of forced immobility, he composed what would become The Science of Patterns EP, self-released in 2002. It was made entirely in that bedroom, on headphones, on gear that could fit on a single table. The Ensoniq ASR-X Pro became a piece of gear Hansen sold and rebought multiple times — always regretting its departure, always returning to the machine that had first given him a compositional language.


Studio 2.0: The Sacramento Garage (2003–2006)

As Hansen’s ambitions expanded beyond what the bedroom could contain, he moved into a converted garage in Sacramento, located two blocks from Harlow’s nightclub on J Street. The garage had a living space above it and, crucially, it offered the freedom to make noise without worrying about neighbors or housemates.

This was the period of the Command Collective, a loose association of Sacramento electronic musicians that included Hansen, Dusty Brown, Evan Schneider, Park Avenue, and Chachi Jones. They performed together, ran group exhibitions, and operated as a mutual support network in a city without obvious infrastructure for what they were doing.

The garage was functionally superior to the bedroom but still far from professional. Acoustic treatment was minimal or nonexistent. Monitoring remained inconsistent. But the space gave Hansen room to accumulate instruments through eBay at a time when analog synthesizers could be purchased before the broader market caught up to their value. The Korg Mono/Poly arrived during these years and became, by his own account, the most essential piece of gear he had ever owned. He described it as “the Japanese answer to the Minimoog,” a budget alternative that became “a whole new beast” once pushed into its deeper capabilities. The Mono/Poly’s four oscillators — capable of operating monophonically or polyphonically — gave it a warmth and grit that no digital workstation could replicate. It would become the defining voice of Dive, audible throughout that album more than any other single instrument.

A friend named Beamer Wilkins gave Hansen an entire collection of synthesizers during this period, instantly expanding his palette beyond what eBay browsing alone could have achieved. Hansen has been consistent about his relationship to these instruments: he does not consider himself a collector. Everything gets used. Each synthesizer, he has said, “has its niche and fills a certain need so it usually becomes pretty obvious when a particular sound or vibe is needed.”

The garage was also where Hansen began composing material that would eventually become Dive, though the album would not be completed until 2011, long after Sacramento had been left behind. In 2006, the design industry and cultural density of San Francisco prevailed, and Hansen made the move.


Early San Francisco: Corporate Days and Musical Nights (2006–2009)

When Hansen arrived in San Francisco, he took a corporate position doing interface architecture and experience design. Music happened at night. The dual existence — full-time design work by day, then coming home to a studio crammed into whatever space his living situation allowed and working until late — represented one of the more grueling stretches of his creative life.

He was running Cakewalk Sonar 6.2 as his DAW on Windows XP 32-bit, with a MOTU 828mk2 as his audio interface. Some of his VST plugins were Windows-only, which complicated any consideration of switching to Mac for music production, even though he used a Mac for his design work — a hardware bifurcation that reflected the divided nature of his professional life.

The Roland RE-201 Space Echo was already present in studio photographs from this period, providing the tape saturation and warmth that would become one of the signature textural elements of the Tycho sound for years to come. In a blog post titled “Studio Work,” Hansen described adding “a true analog mixing console” to his setup, which changed his workflow significantly. The monitoring situation in these early San Francisco years remained unresolved — the studio lacked proper acoustic treatment, a fact Hansen acknowledged in his writing while pushing forward regardless.

By August 2009, three years into his San Francisco tenure, Hansen documented a significantly more refined workspace on the ISO50 blog. He had built a custom keyboard rack from an IKEA Jerker desk, shelves, and heavy-duty drawer rails sourced from Home Depot. Each shelf slid in and out on the rails, allowing multiple synthesizers to be stacked in a compact footprint while maintaining complete accessibility. He had acquired a Herman Miller Embody chair. Organization had become a creative priority: “It’s really stressful to try to work in a disorganized environment,” he wrote. The aesthetic of the space was beginning to match the aesthetic of the music — clean, warm, carefully considered, with every element chosen rather than merely accumulated.


The DAW Transition: From Cakewalk Sonar to REAPER

Before the San Francisco studio entered its most productive phase, a foundational change occurred in how Hansen interacted with the digital side of his workflow. The switch from Cakewalk Sonar to Cockos REAPER happened during the late San Francisco apartment period, triggered by what Hansen described as the final exhaustion of his patience with Sonar.

“Sonar is out,” he wrote on the ISO50 blog. “X1 was the nail in the coffin for me. I had always struggled with that program, so many bugs and broken features. But it was all I knew. I tried Reaper and after about 30 minutes I never looked back.”

The switch was not merely a change of software. It was a conceptual reorientation. REAPER allowed Hansen to treat the DAW as, in his words, “a multi-track tape player” — a framing that aligned with his analog sensibilities even within a digital workflow. Where Cakewalk had organized music around its own structural logic, REAPER presented a blank, completely customizable canvas. Its free item positioning feature allowed audio clips to be arranged non-linearly, stacked, and overlapped across tracks — enabling what Hansen described as “a hybrid sampler and multi-track workflow” that he had always wanted but could never quite achieve in other software.

REAPER’s lightweight architecture meant it could run efficiently on hardware that would have struggled with heavier DAWs. Its scripting and macro capabilities appealed directly to his background as a software designer. The interface could be customized to create a tactile, muscle-memory-based workspace where every frequently used function had a dedicated keyboard shortcut or controller mapping. This made the computer feel less like a machine being operated and more like an instrument being played. Hansen would later identify REAPER as the specific tool that “enabled him to finish Dive” — and from this point forward, REAPER became the non-negotiable foundation of every Tycho recording.


The San Francisco Basement Studio: Eleven Years in One Room (2009–2018)

The most consequential studio Tycho has ever occupied was not a room in the conventional sense — it was a basement. Hansen established his San Francisco studio in a basement space beneath his home, converting it into a full production environment. “I turned my basement into a studio and that works out pretty good,” he told Performer Magazine. “I’ve got my studios under my house and the second I think of something or the second I feel like I should be working on it, I just go down there and start recording.” The physical fact of working below grade — separated from the living space above by a floor, accessible at any hour without the social friction that sharing a room-level studio would impose — shaped his practice as much as any piece of gear.

This was the room that Tape Op documented in a major feature, that XLR8R photographed for their “In the Studio” series, and that produced Dive (2011), Awake (2014), Epoch (2016), and the foundation of Weather (2019). It was also the room that would be formally credited on that last record’s liner notes as “My Basement, San Francisco, CA” — an intentional act of transparency that grounded the project in domestic space even as professional studios proliferated around it. That credit is one of the more revealing pieces of documentation in the Tycho catalog, a deliberate plainness that insists on the project’s domestic, self-determined origins.

The Room and Its Challenges

The San Francisco basement was, by Hansen’s description, “cavernous” and “very long” — dimensions that created persistent acoustic challenges. A long room with parallel reflective surfaces generates standing waves and comb filtering, particularly in the low-to-mid frequency range where Tycho’s music is densest. High-frequency reflections off hard walls smear stereo imaging and obscure the spatial detail that makes Hansen’s reverb treatments work as intended.

In the early years of this period, Hansen addressed the room’s worst problems with a modular acoustic insulation system — panels that could be positioned to tame specific reflection points without requiring permanent construction. The approach was pragmatic rather than ideal: the treatment was functional rather than architecturally integrated. But it gave Hansen a working environment that, while imperfect, was far better than the untreated spaces he had occupied in Sacramento.

The Analog Front-End

The most transformative development of this era was the systematic construction of an analog signal chain that would fundamentally define the Tycho sound. Hansen has identified the moment he first acquired a proper hardware preamp with EQ as one of the most significant transitions in his production history. “The second I got a proper preamp with an EQ it opened up a whole new world,” he told Origin Effects. Before that upgrade, everything had been running through the interface preamps — functional but colorless, characterless, unable to impart the harmonic density he sought.

The signal chain that emerged over years of deliberate accumulation centered on several key components. A pair of Neve 1076 units became the foundation — Hansen valued them specifically for the warmth of their distortion character and the fact that they could absorb heavy signal levels without breaking down harshly. He used them not as transparent gain stages but as coloration devices, pushing signal into the transformers to generate harmonic distortion that added body and density before the audio reached the converter. The Universal Audio 6176 Vintage Channel Strip served as his standard preamp for recording guitars and basses, providing the 610 tube preamp circuit combined with the 1176 FET compressor in a single chassis. The Empirical Labs Distressor EL8-X became a constant presence, described in the XLR8R studio feature as a “Swiss-Army-knife-type” compressor capable of emulating multiple classic compressor behaviors.

The Lynx Aurora 16 served as the primary analog-to-digital converter, with Hansen crediting its character as contributing to what he described as the “soft, creamy texture” of his recordings — a slightly warm conversion character that preserved the analog quality of the source material through the digital transition. The Dangerous 2-Bus+ provided analog summing, allowing multiple stems from REAPER to be routed through analog circuitry before returning to the digital domain. The Dangerous D-Box served as monitor controller and an additional analog summing point.

Monitoring: The Genelec Transition

The monitoring setup evolved significantly across this period. After years of working without a properly calibrated reference environment, Hansen acquired the Genelec 8330A monitors — compact nearfield speakers featuring Genelec’s Smart Active Monitoring technology, which allows the speakers to be calibrated to the specific frequency response of the room they occupy. For a producer whose music was built around specific tonal decisions — the warmth of a preamp, the saturation of a tape delay, the character of a reverb — having a monitoring environment accurate enough to actually hear those decisions was transformative.

For headphones, the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80-ohm served as Hansen’s studio standard throughout much of this period. The Audeze LCD-X later became his primary headphone reference — the first, he said, “with the accuracy, low frequency response and soundstage to truly replace a studio monitoring environment.” Even after investing in Genelec monitors and professional acoustic treatment, he continued to reach for headphones as a primary mixing reference. The music had been conceived for headphone listening since 1999.

The Synthesizer Collection

The synthesizer collection grew to fill the basement’s available surfaces. The Minimoog Model D — an original 1972 unit, among the earliest production examples — became the most-used instrument across the entire Tycho catalog. Hansen has described it as “the closest thing I’ve ever found to a guitar in a synthesizer.” He built polyphonic textures by layering stacked monophonic takes, each carrying the instrument’s warmth and slight tuning variation, creating a natural chorus effect fundamentally different from what a polyphonic synthesizer produces.

The Korg Mono/Poly carried forward from the Sacramento years and remained the defining voice of Dive. The Access Virus C and Virus Indigo provided textural depth and the distinctive reverb sound built into the instrument’s effects section. The Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 (a Rev 3 example) arrived as what Hansen called an “indispensable newcomer,” its woody, polyphonic warmth filling space that no other instrument could. The Korg Trident — acquired because Boards of Canada, Hansen’s primary influence, had reportedly used one — contributed its distinctive wobbly, vintage polysynth character. The Oberheim Four Voice FVS-1, a 1970s polyphonic synthesizer assembled from four independent SEM modules each with its own tuning drift and personality, became a foundational instrument across Dive, Awake, and Epoch.

The Effects Architecture

The effects chain was as compositionally important as any instrument. As Hansen told Soundtoys, “You’re playing the effects just like you’re playing the instruments.” The Ursa Major Space Station SST-282 — a 1981 digital reverb — became a studio stalwart. The Roland RE-201 Space Echo contributed tape delay and tape saturation. The Strymon Timeline, BigSky, and Deco brought modern digital processing. The Strymon Deco — Hansen’s self-described “favorite guitar pedal of all time,” of which he eventually owned three — emulated tape saturation and doubletracking. Chase Bliss Tonal Recall, Blooper, and Mood provided boutique analog delay and experimental texture.

The defining technique across all of this hardware was the use of reverb as a compositional instrument rather than a mixing effect. Hansen has stated directly that “creating chords using reverb is kind of my signature.” He would play single notes through heavily reverbed chains, allowing the tails of successive notes to overlap and interact, generating harmonic structures that existed only in the reverb itself. He then placed aggressive compression after the reverb rather than before it, which raised the volume of the reverb tails relative to the dry signal, making the spatial content a co-equal participant in the mix rather than atmospheric background.

The Count Eldridge Collaboration

Mix engineer Mikael “Count” Eldridge — whose credits include DJ Shadow, Radiohead, and New Order — began working with Hansen on Dive in 2011. The relationship proved so productive that Count became a permanent figure in the Tycho production cycle, handling mixing and serving as a critical outside perspective on music assembled in deep solitary immersion.

Count’s primary technical contribution was designing a mixing environment that allowed Hansen to work in the same room where he composed and recorded. Because both engineers worked in REAPER, session files transferred without translation loss. Count could make adjustments in a properly treated room, and Hansen could take those same session files back to his studio and continue composing with Count’s mix parameters already in place. The workflow was iterative rather than sequential — Count would visit every few weeks to mix newly created material, allowing production and mixing to develop in parallel rather than in stages.


External Studios: Drums, Drums at Panoramic House, and the World Outside the Home

The overwhelming majority of Tycho’s music has been made in home studios. But live drums — integrated fully beginning with Awake (2014) — required spaces that home environments could not provide.

For Awake, drums were tracked at Decibel Studios with engineer Robert Cheek. Epoch (2016) extended this pattern but added a significant location: additional live drum sessions were recorded at Panoramic House, a residential recording facility perched in the hills above Stinson Beach on the Marin coast of California, north of San Francisco by about an hour’s drive. Engineer Peter Franco handled the Panoramic House sessions, and the facility’s remote coastal setting gave those specific sessions a particular atmosphere that can be traced directly to the album’s more austere, environmental character. The drum recording credits in the Epoch liner notes document both facilities: Anthony “Rocky” Gallo at Virtue & Vice Studios, and Peter Franco at Panoramic House.

Panoramic House was not merely a practical choice of convenience. Hansen had a documented personal connection to Stinson Beach through surfing — the beach is one of the primary California surf breaks associated with his non-studio life — and the attempt to record at Panoramic House for Epoch extended that geography into the production process itself. He ultimately did not stay; he returned to his Berkeley studio for the bulk of the album’s tracking, later noting that after the Panoramic experiment he “wanted to return to my bedroom producer role.” But the drum recordings made there appear on the finished album, and the facility is credited accordingly.


The Lake Tahoe Cabin Sessions: Writing Awake and Epoch (2013, 2015)

For Awake (2014) and again for Epoch (2016), Hansen and guitarist/bassist Zac Brown retreated to a cabin near Lake Tahoe for the initial phase of writing and tracking. The isolation provided what Hansen described as “a blank slate” — an environment without the accumulated associations and habitual patterns that a long-established studio inevitably accumulates. A familiar studio is a comfortable studio, and comfort is not always useful when the goal is to push the music into new territory.

Acoustically, the cabin was an untreated space presenting the full range of challenges that uncontrolled rooms impose on serious recording. A mobile recording rig — centered around RME UCX interfaces and MacBook Pros — allowed high-quality tracking in this non-traditional environment. The constraint of working in an acoustically imperfect space pushed the sessions toward a more spontaneous, less perfectionist mode of operation.

The collaborative dynamics were as important as the acoustic ones. Three people in a room — Hansen, Brown, and eventually O’Connor — working off each other’s performances produced arrangements that Hansen described as “more focused and had more movement and dynamics” compared to his solitary production method. The title track “Awake” was completed in eight to ten hours from start to finish, an anomaly in Hansen’s typically methodical process. Tahoe demonstrated that constraint — of time, of space, of acoustic environment — could function as a creative accelerant rather than an impediment.


The Berkeley Relocation: Epoch (2015–2016)

Following eleven years in San Francisco — across multiple apartments and the long-running basement studio — Hansen relocated to a studio in Berkeley for the Epoch sessions. The move was motivated by a desire for more space and a better acoustic foundation. The San Francisco basement had served Tycho through three albums, but it had also been a constant negotiation with its acoustic limitations.

In the Berkeley studio, Hansen implemented a modular acoustic treatment system more systematically than in any of his previous spaces, with high-frequency absorbers positioned specifically to address the persistent challenges of long, reflective rooms. The Genelec 8330A monitors, already present from the later San Francisco period, remained the primary monitoring solution in Berkeley. Their SAM calibration software, which measures the room’s frequency response at the listening position and generates a correction curve that the speakers apply to their output, allowed Hansen to calibrate the speakers to the Berkeley room’s acoustic characteristics. For a producer whose music was defined by specific tonal choices — warmth, saturation, spatial depth — that translation accuracy mattered enormously.

The Korg Minilogue arrived during the Berkeley period and immediately became Hansen’s most-used synthesizer. A four-voice analog polysynth with every parameter accessible through a dedicated front-panel knob, the Minilogue’s directness and immediacy made it ideal for someone whose creative process emphasized playing rather than programming.

For Epoch, Count and Hansen incorporated the Dangerous Music 2-BUS+ analog summing mixer into the mix chain, routing individual digital track stems out of REAPER and through the 16-channel analog summing mixer before capturing the result. Count explained that the analog summing gave the mixes “better punch, stereo imagery, and a sense of three-dimensionality.” Epoch received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album — validation of an approach that prioritized analog summing’s contribution to the mix.


The Weather Era: Count Designs the Room, and “My Basement” Becomes a Credit (2018–2019)

The introduction of vocalist Hannah Cottrell (performing as Saint Sinner) for Weather (2019) required a technical response that went beyond simply adding a microphone to an existing setup. Vocal recording demands a different acoustic environment than purely instrumental production — more controlled, with less room character in the recording itself — and mixing vocals into the dense Tycho sound required a monitoring environment accurate enough to hear how the vocal was sitting relative to the instrumental bed.

In 2018, Hansen undertook a significant renovation of his San Francisco basement studio. For the first time, the acoustic treatment was professionally designed rather than empirically arrived at. Count Eldridge, drawing on his experience as both a recording engineer and a studio designer, created a treatment scheme specifically calibrated to allow mixing and tracking to be done within the same room with confidence in the results. The treatment involved broadband absorption panels and targeted bass trapping positioned to address the room’s specific frequency problems — achieving a neutral enough response that final mix decisions could be made without the compromises that poorly treated rooms force on every engineer who works in them.

“Now it’s great, I don’t have to travel anywhere to record,” Hansen said of the renovated space. “We have a workflow where I don’t even have to leave my house anymore.” After Count’s renovation, the home studio could handle everything — drums tracked externally at Decibelle Recording Studios by engineer Robert Cheek, but the overwhelming majority of the record made in the basement.

This is why the Weather liner notes credit the studio simply as “My Basement, San Francisco, CA.” The credit appears alongside “Decibelle Recording Studios” — a professional facility for the drums — and no other external studio. The choice of language is not self-deprecating; it is accurate and deliberate. Hansen had spent years working toward an environment good enough to make a professional album without leaving home, and the credit acknowledges exactly that. It also preserves an honesty about the project’s nature: Tycho has always been a home studio operation, and claiming a more impressive studio address would have been a misrepresentation.

The vocal chain assembled for the Weather sessions was the most sophisticated Hansen had ever deployed. A Neumann U87 Ai captured lead vocals. An AEA R44C ribbon microphone handled backing vocals. The signal ran through a hardware Neve 1076 preamp, then into the compressor section of the Universal Audio 6176 Vintage Channel Strip. Post-processing used UAD plugins extensively, including the Sonnox Oxford Dynamic EQ and the AMS RMX16 digital reverb. Hansen had moved fully into the Universal Audio ecosystem by this point, using Apollo interfaces — the x8p and Twin models — and UAD-2 Satellite DSP accelerators, with the UAD plugin library providing a consistent analog-character processing chain within the digital domain.


The Oakland Home Studio: Current Configuration (2020–Present)

Hansen’s move from San Francisco to Oakland brought yet another complete studio rebuild. He transported his entire synthesizer collection, stompboxes, and outboard gear from San Francisco to Oakland. Critically, he carried the acoustic insulation from his former studio into the new space, recognizing that the investment in professional treatment was not to be abandoned simply because the address changed. The Berkeley and San Francisco treatment — designed by Count — traveled with the project.

The Oakland studio was documented most comprehensively in August 2023 when Reverb visited for a video tour. The emphasis throughout was a single word: ergonomics. The studio was organized with the accumulated knowledge of someone who has rebuilt production environments six times and has developed precise opinions about what makes a workspace functional versus merely impressive.

The room is organized into specialized stations, each set up for immediate use without patching or setup time. A dedicated guitar and bass station to the left of the main desk keeps instruments permanently patched into preamps and an amp chain built around a Bogner Duende amp head paired with a Universal Audio OX Reactive Amp Attenuator, allowing for instant plug-and-play capability. The OX attenuates the physical speaker of the amp and sends the signal directly to the recording interface, capturing the full character of a cranked tube amplifier without the volume that would make it impossible to use in a residential space.

A bass zone features a Moog Prodigy and a Fender American Professional II Precision Bass, which Hansen considers functionally interchangeable in their ability to provide raw, gritty low-end. Two separate effects stations divide the processing chain by topology: one station handles mono effects, another handles stereo effects. The stereo station is centered on a Moog Matriarch, a four-note paraphonic semi-modular synthesizer whose patchbay connections form the routing backbone of the stereo chain. The Matriarch’s centrality is both functional and symbolic: it is simultaneously a sound source and an effects processor, demonstrating Hansen’s consistent philosophy that the boundary between instrument and effect is always negotiable.

Despite the hardware visible throughout the room, Hansen observed that his computer remained “the centerpiece of his working environment,” with approximately “75 percent of the stuff that I use being effects or instruments in-the-box.” The physical gear mattered — its tactile interface, its specific analog character, its irreplaceable warmth — but the balance had shifted further into software than it had ever been.


The 2023 Gear Sale: A Studio Reborn

In September 2023, Hansen partnered with Reverb.com to open The Official Tycho Reverb Shop, listing nearly 100 pieces of equipment for sale. The collection was valued at over $160,000 and included instruments that had appeared on Dive, Awake, and Epoch: the Korg Trident, a Sequential Prophet-5 Rev 3, a Moog Voyager, the Ursa Major StarGate 626, the Roland RE-201 Space Echo, the Oberheim FVS-1 (listed at approximately $30,000, the most expensive single item), the Eventide H3000, a Neve 54 Series broadcast console, and dozens of additional pieces spanning the history of the project.

The Oberheim FVS-1 — a 1970s polyphonic synthesizer assembled from four independent SEM modules, each with its own tuning drift and personality, creating an instrument that never produced the same sound exactly twice — had been a foundational instrument across three albums. Hansen’s decision to sell it represented a genuine letting-go rather than a casual decluttering.

The sale was not a rejection of hardware. Hansen was explicit about the practical reasoning: much of the gear was “just rotting away” in the studio, unused. But it was also a philosophical statement. His gear priorities had shifted — “my gear lust switched from hardware to software.” For Infinite Health, he wanted to return to “bedroom electronic production style,” building song foundations from electronic tools rather than beginning with hardware and layering in digital elements. Software emulations had reached the point where he could alter signal chains mid-production — reversing the order of a delay and an amplifier simulation at the mixing stage — a flexibility impossible with committed hardware recording.

What was explicitly kept: the 1972 Minimoog Model D (“No, absolutely not. I don’t care if I never use it again. It’s too sentimental.”), the Moog Matriarch, the Moog Prodigy, the Oberheim OB-X8, the Access Virus C units, and the Korg Minilogue. What was sold was the excess — everything that had stopped being useful without becoming sentimental.


The Infinite Health Era: Oakland and the Return to Electronic Foundations (2022–2024)

The Oakland studio that produced Infinite Health (2024) was configured around what Hansen described as a “third era” for the project — a deliberate return to the electronic-first aesthetic of the earliest Sacramento recordings, but with twenty-five years of accumulated knowledge about signal chains, monitoring, acoustic treatment, and collaborative dynamics.

The album was co-produced with Chris Taylor (of Grizzly Bear), a collaboration that brought external influence into a creative process that had previously been defined by Hansen’s solitary immersion interrupted only by his established collaborators. Taylor’s involvement pushed the production toward a more rhythmically aggressive, uptempo character — prioritizing chopped drum breaks and rhythmic density over the atmospheric, guitar-led melodic approach that had defined the band era.

The core instruments for Infinite Health included the Softube Model 84 (a Juno-106 emulation that Hansen called “one of the best soft synths ever made” and credited with inspiring the album’s title track), the Korg Minilogue (appearing throughout the record), and the Universal Audio Minimoog emulation — which Hansen, to his own expressed surprise, found himself preferring over the physical 1972 Minimoog for certain applications, citing the plugin’s flexibility and recall capability. That preference for the software emulation over the hardware original was, by Hansen’s own account, something he found genuinely strange to acknowledge. He had built a career around the assertion that the Minimoog was irreplaceable. And yet, for Infinite Health, the workflow demanded flexibility over character. The Minimoog plugin delivered that flexibility. The original stayed in the studio, untouched.

The production philosophy represented a conscious return to Hansen’s origins. His stated goal was “to get back to how I made music in the early 2000s, that led up to Dive” — specifically, the idea of writing a song with synthesizers first, then perhaps layering drums and guitars later. “At the beginning of Tycho, I was more like, ‘let’s write a song with synthesizers, and then maybe we’ll layer drums and guitars later.’ Infinite Health goes back to that bedroom electronic production style,” he told MusicTech in 2025.


The DAW Through Two Decades: REAPER as the Constant

Across every studio reconfiguration — six physical spaces, dozens of synthesizer acquisitions and sales, multiple monitoring upgrades, acoustic treatments designed and redesigned — one element remained unchanged from the moment Hansen switched to it during the Dive sessions: REAPER.

Hansen’s use of REAPER evolved through multiple versions, with each iteration adding capabilities he incorporated into his workflow. By 2021, he was demonstrating Super8, REAPER’s built-in looping tool, for The REAPER Blog — using it for songwriting and live performance, routing everything through Super8, controlling record and play functions via MIDI footswitch. By 2023, his configuration involved ReaLearn, an add-on script enabling deep integration between REAPER and external controllers. A Softube Console 1 hardware controller was mapped through ReaLearn to REAPER’s mixer parameters, PSP InfiniStrip, and additional devices, creating a physical mixing surface that made the digital mixing experience feel tactile rather than mouse-dependent.

The nesting capabilities — the ability to have infinite tracks nested within a single track, making any track potentially a complete subproject — allowed signal routing of a complexity that would require a large-format console in the analog domain. For a producer who treats effects processing as composition, that routing architecture is not a convenience but a creative necessity. Hansen has identified REAPER as the instrument where he has spent his true 10,000 hours. “I play synths and guitar, but I’m not virtuosic at either of those things,” he told Grammy.com. “The thing I’ve spent the 10,000 hours at is working in REAPER on a computer. That inspires me the most.”

For live performance, a dual-computer system managed the show’s technical demands. The primary machine runs REAPER to handle all audio input channels, virtual instrument hosting, and effects processing with low latency. A second computer runs Ableton Live solely to coordinate master automation for the setlist, syncing REAPER project tabs with visual projections and stage lighting. This separation of functions ensures that the core audio engine is never compromised by the demands of visual synchronization, while providing touring crew with the Ableton Live interface they already know how to troubleshoot under stage conditions.


The Philosophy: Studio as Instrument

Hansen’s wife has noted that he is “always rebuilding your studio.” The observation is accurate, and the pattern it describes — constant reconfiguration, perpetual refinement, the studio as an ongoing project rather than a finished space — is central to understanding what the studio means to Tycho’s creative practice.

Hansen has described designing “ergonomic systems for human-machine interaction,” treating the physical arrangement of gear as a creative variable rather than a logistical one. Moving a synthesizer from one position to another changes how often it gets used. Changing the monitoring configuration alters how mixes translate. Adding or removing a piece of outboard gear from the signal chain changes every decision that follows it in the chain. The studio is not a neutral container for the music-making process; it is an active participant in that process.

This is why Hansen has never worked in commercial studios for extended creative periods. The home environment is not a compromise made necessary by limited budget — it is a deliberate creative choice. The ability to walk into the studio at any hour, leave a session running, return in the morning and pick up exactly where work stopped — these are compositional tools. “I almost always use, not the first take but the first session,” he has said, emphasizing that spontaneity requires a studio that is always ready, always accessible, always configured for the specific way he works.

The Weather credit — “My Basement, San Francisco, CA” — is the most direct expression of this philosophy in any piece of Tycho’s documentation. In a music industry where studio credits often function as prestige signals, listing a basement as the primary recording location is a statement of values. The studio’s prestige derives not from its name or its location but from its acoustic calibration, its gear, and the work done within it. What matters is the environment’s function, not its appearance.

That the music sounds warm, organized, and careful is not incidental to the environment where it is made. The Sacramento bedroom produced music that rewarded headphone listening because the bedroom required headphone listening. The San Francisco basement produced music of increasing harmonic complexity and spatial depth because the studio’s analog chain gave Hansen the means to hear and shape that complexity. The Oakland studio — ergonomically organized, acoustically treated, monitored through calibrated Genelecs, centered on a software-heavy workflow — produces music that is simultaneously rooted in the past and engaged with the present.

The circle completes itself not because Hansen has returned to the beginning, but because the beginning was always a philosophy rather than a configuration. Start with what you have. Let the constraints push you. The room is part of the instrument. The instrument is the song.
